UNITED WE FALL
by Stu Hiatt
FOUR
"Bruce had been crossing over on a regular basis before his exposure," Barbara said.
"He stayed in contact with the League's Batman. In turn, he supplied ours with all this."
"Then that's when the Lords found out what a busy little bat he'd been," Helena said.
Seeing Barbara's annoyed look at her statement Helena added "Superman's words, not mine.Anyway, that was before his capture and GL and Hawkgirl's disappearance."
Which was extremely odd, Barbara thought.
"Why can't Jimmy come and stay?" Kara asked defiantly.
"Because he could prove to be a bad risk," Superman replied. "I know what you're gonna say. Pa and Ma's here, and so is Lois, but that's different. You know that any of them could be used against us. It's better to take the necessary precautions."
I'll show you necessary precautions, Kara thought.
"Watch this," J'onn said.
On the monitor was a familiar dark-skinned woman with short hair. Behind her was chaos and carnage.
"This is Sroya Bashir reporting. The creatures seem to be made of magma and - this is as yet unconfirmed - appear to be multiplying."
An army made of what looked like walking magma men were on the march.
"Superman, Diana. Return to San Baquero at once.Troops are already implementing evacuation procedures."
"We're on it!" Diana said enthusiastically. Together she and Superman returned to the rapidly erupting island.
"Are you okay?" Kara asked J'onn. "You look green."
"I am green," came the dry reply.
"I mean sickly green," Kara restated.
J'onn, if he had heard her, wasn't responding. He could hear the others. He could even feel their presences. It was like being back on Mars.
Almost.
Then J'onn blacked out.
Technician Kyle left his post and helped Supergirl lift the Martian to his feet.
"He needs rest," Kara said. "Take him to his quarters." Kyle and another technician did just that. They knew that she was now in charge, with the others gone on a mission. So did she.
And she was obviously going to take advantage of it...
'Tea was watching something on TV. A news broadcast. At least the Justice Lords hadn't completely censored TV. They did rely on broadcasts to inform them of any potential situations, and now one was brewing on the island of San Baquero.
"Looks like we pulled you out just in time," said the albino humanoid with pointed ears.
"I'm the one who pulled her out!" said an identical humanoid, only with a more feminine tone.
'Tea turned to Downpour. "Please don't start arguing again," 'Tea said.
I love you guys, but...
"I'm sorry," Shifter said.
"Don't worry about it," Galatea said. Taking a closer look at the TV she said, "Now I wonder why she isn't there?"
"She's the one who started the whole mess," Downpour said.
"That's not what I mean," 'Tea said. "But you're right."
"Ahhhggggh!" Downpour and Shifter said in unison before falling to the floor.
'Tea quickly ran to them.
Spasmodic jerking and what the "Wonder Twins" were incoherently saying meant one thing.
Psychic contact with someone or something, and Galatea knew of only one obvious candidate...
"Lord J'onn is in his quarters," Kyle told Kara.
"Thank you," she said. "You can return to your post. And notify me the instant the others return, or when J'onn regains consciousness. I've got something to take care of."
"What do you want?"
Lois Lane wasn't in the mood for visitors. Might as well be visitors, since I'm in a prison, she thought. And the visitor's one of my jailers.
"The same thing you do," Kara said. "And I'm gonna give it to you."
Lois eyed her suspiciously. "Now why would you do that?"
"Because I can," Kara answered emphatically. "You know Clark's never gonna let you go. Things have fallen apart between you two, you're just a caged bird up here."
"Got that right," Lois said disgustedly, crossing her arms. "Still haven't answered my question. Why?"
"I told you why. Now are you gonna let me help you or what?"
The same way you helped Batgirl, I bet. Or shot while trying to escape, right?
"Suppose I do let you help me," Lois said. "What are you gonna tell Clark?"
Smallville rules the world. Maybe everyone's right. I'm just his concubine.
"Let me worry about that," Kara said. "Now quit stalling and let's get to the transporter."
All right, I'll bite. What's your game?
"After you," Lois said. __________________
