Well, I'm sad to say that Superman Returns did not win the Oscar for best achievement in visual effects. I can't believe Pirates of the Caribean won. I think that the effects in SR were about the best there is right now. I am proud to say, however, that the company "Frantic Films" (which also did the other nominated film Poseidon as well as SR) is from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. My hometown. The guy who started the company (Chris Bond) started it in his mothers basement. Anyway, I guess I'm probably a little biased but I think anyone would have a hard time argueing that those effects in SR are awesome.

The airplane scene should have won even though the end of the Pirates movie with the giant squid eating Captain Jack was very impressive, I think overall Superman Returns effects were better.

I don't ever watch Oscars. I figure Hollywood opinion never matches my own anyway.

I'm not a big Oscar fan either. I'm not even a big fan of Hollywood. I think that about 95% of the movies made are unoriginal pieces of crap and that the Oscars are a "monument to ego." But as I mentioned, Frantic Films is from my hometown, so I was interested in that particuliar category. I will say this though..."Little Miss Sunshine", "Pans Labyrinth" and "An Inconvinient Truth" are 3 movies that I do NOT consider to be part of the 95% I mentioned above.

I'm not sure I've heard of the first two. Mostly I'm an action adventure movie fan.

You should check out Pans Labyrinth Tim. It's spanish so it's subtitled, but don't let that deter you. It's set during the spanish civil war in the 1940's and the little girl goes with her mother to live with her step father who is a captain in the army. He's a fascist dictator type and he only cares about the mother because she's carrying his son. He cares even less about the girl. So she goes exploring one day and finds Pans Labyrinth and the adventure begins. It's a sad movie but also kind of uplifting at the same time. It's a fairy tale but it definately is not for children. There's some brutal violence and don't let the name fool you, there is no Peter Pan or any of that type of stuff. It's more like Grimms fairy tales, but not the watered down, child friendly Disney type, but like the original Grimms tales, which if you've ever read them, are quite scary and brutal. Anyway, I highly recommend it.

I'll check it out next time I go to the video rental store. Last movie I saw on DVD was "Flyboys" with that guy from Spider-Man that plays Osborn Jr. Pretty good movie about World War I.

It's in theatres now. The reason I mentioned it, is because it was up for quite a few Oscars including best foreign film. In fact, the only film to win more Oscars this year was Scorceses "The Departed."

I'll probably have to wait for the dvd. Have to save the movie going money for the real big stuff like spider-man and the fantastic four otherwise the wife will put her foot down.

What about "300?"
Posted:  01 Mar 2007 20:47
No I got sick on the last Frank Miller movie. That sin city was like the grossest thing I've ever saw. I'm betting 300 is going to be just as bad even though the commercial looks exciting.

I'm all for the old school where the bad guy gets shot and instantly falls out of the picture. I get it he's dead, I don't need to see his intestines.

Had they used myself in the movie to assist Kal-El it may have won

Spiderman 3 & Rise of the silver surfer should be battling it out next year for the visual effects statue
