I like Christopher Reeve's costume the best myself. It's classic comic book Superman. __________________ |

Brandon Routh's costume DOES NOT look more professional. It very much looks like a cheap costume store suit which are known to be notoriously bad copies of originals.
The cape looks like a plastic tarp for crying out loud. Over all the costume at best has a satirical look and effect to it, vaguely reminiscent of Joel Schumacher's approach to the Batman costume for George Clooney...It just lacks the nipples. Superman is supposed to look like Superman, not the vision some director's reinterpretation-al approach, ESPECIALLY Bryan Singer's.. The hip hugger briefs, the silly slanted belt. Gimmicky looking boots. Small "S" shield high on the chest. Neckline, cape..All wrong and all reidiculous looking. It's the first Superman costume I've ever seen that gives the character a feminine look. From Kirk Alyn through George Reeves, to Christopher Reeve (Reeve was the most visually accurate depiction of Superman on film), all wore accurate variations of the Superman costume. Routh's was a joke in that long line of tradition. |

I'm not quite that negative about it, I kind of got used to it to a certain degree, but I still don't like the cape, or the briefs, or the dark colors in his costume. I definitely prefer Christopher Reeve's costume. I think they tried to make Superman modern with the dark colors, but why does Superman have to fit into a modern trend anyway. For one he's a country boy, a big boy scout, two he's the most powerful superhero of them all. So I don't think Supes cares if Batman is looking more gritty than he does at the moment. Supes' costume should be bright and cheerful because that's the kind of hero he is. __________________ |

I NEVER got used to it.
Tim, I don't expect a Superman film to be "gritty" like Batman..I DO want to see a much more serious treatment to the character than we've seen in film.. Though I no longer buy the comic books, I can point out that even the Superman comics from the late seventies through the nineties have given the character a much more serious treatment than the Donner or Singer films. Even the simplistic scripted black and white episodes of the first season of "The Adventures of Superman" with George Reeves was a serious treatment to the character, before subsequent seasons turned into a kiddie show. The first season of TAOS with George Reeves at the time was listed as "Mystery-Suspense" in TV guide, and the show itself was filmed in a dark, film noir style much like the detective films of the forties.(Maltese Falcon, etc.) Superman was a no-nonsense man of action, he slapped villains around and bumped some heads. The gangsters were ruthless, and people got killed. The above depiction of Superman in the show's first season is in fact a very accurate and faithful characterization of him as Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created him. Even prior to George, the Kirk Alyn serials were just as faithful to Siegel and Shuster, even if lacking just as much as TAOS in story substance.. In one Alyn episode, Superman tosses a villain up and down outside a top story window of a building in order to frighten the man and gain information. So before you lock Superman in a preconceived box of who the character is, you should study his history. I mean that as a suggestion, not a dressing down. Now having pointed all that out, the thing is Superman's traditional costume was never altered to depict a "darker, grittier" Superman for any of these earlier incarnations. Though the designs varied somewhat from Alyn to Reeve, (we're talking decades and generations here), ALL were faithful representations of the Universally Iconic Superman costume. By comparison, I wouldn't wipe my feet with Routh's costume. It's just plain wrong no matter how you look at it. Getting away from the subject, you mentioned Superman being a country boy..I suggested this before, and I STRONGLY re-assert this suggestion. Get a copy of "IT'S SUPERMAN!" by Tom De Haven and read it from cover to cover..It's a completely original re-telling of the Superman story from a wholly different perspective. The setting is the thirties in which Siegel and Shuster created the character, and although it's completely different from any origin story of Superman you've ever read, the tone is exactly in the frame that Siegel and Shuster had set for the character when he was conceived. It will help you in opening up and re-examining your notions of who Superman IS. Although I enjoyed the first two Superman films with Reeve, I think the worst possible damage done by these films is that today's generation, and some from mine, for some reason thinks Donner's interpretation of Superman is THE official cannon for the character, and the prevailing attitude is as if Donner created Superman, and his interpretation is the only valid one. Baloney. That kind of thinking is killing the character, and was the cause for much controversy and criticism for Singer's film. If I was head of Warner Bros. I'd definitely fire Singer, and be looking to make the sequel a re-start with a new director. |

Well I just think Superman's character is one of optimism. Not that he can't be a tough guy. He is, but you don't have to be miserable like Batman to be a tough guy. Batman is a manic depressive, while Superman is a happy kind of guy. You can be happy and whoop the tar out of the bad guys. His character has grown to be like the spirit of America, optimistic, going forward, always looking for the happy ending. I always see Krypton as what people of the 50's were looking to America to become in the future, you know with rocket packs, flying cars, the whole deal. __________________ |

just ask me this? how many of you think that the new superman movies will only have ten years: I'm talking about the actor brandon routh. And maybe the next superman movies that they will make in the future will be the last I love superman but the casting for lois lane and perry white and jimmy olson aren't right and that why I can't say the superman returns is a great movie. this director brian singer did a great job on X-men but there was already a superman movie before x- men and he didn't do a great job for those who love'd superman the movie![]() ![]() ![]()
