The article has been blown up for easier viewing all over the net. It says a man from NY by the name of John Lantham, was found as an apparent suicide by hanging, leaving behind a teenage son.
It's Michael, under an alias. This gets backed up & explains the note of disgust in Kate's response "Why would I go to the funeral?" Michael sold her, Jack & Sawyer out to the others for passage for him and his son.
