After rewatching the first season, a strange thought crossed my mind. In the pilot, the whole (original) gang is on the beach and that one engine is still making a huge racket when John yells at some poor guy to watch out, which makes him hesitate in front of the engine and results in that guy getting sucked into it and boom.

For no apparrent(sp?) reason my mind jumped back to the movie "The Matrix", when Neo goes to visit the Oracle and she tells him not to worry about the vase which results in him knocking it over(or not, depending or your view). At this point, mulling it over, I rewatched said movie and was reminded of this priceless moment which is what I'm thinking this crazy island may just be about.

For your pleasure(and something to mull over yourself), Morpheus' 'tutorial' to Neo about reality:

Quote:
Neo(amazed by chair):Is this real?

Morpheus:What is 'real'? How do you define 'real'? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell and taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpretted by your brain

As for other rediculous theories floating around my skull, I offer these two for now;
I'm thinking that maybe Rose will be revealed as Walt's grandma(comes from her conversation with another lostie saying how her daughter was dead and how the show works in general).
Those opening shots that are close-ups of people's eyes are our look from the vantage point of 'smokey'(they seemed to happen mainly when they were doing someone's flashbacks for the first time, which worked theoretically until the first season finale close-up of Aaron's eye-kinda hard for a newborn to have a backstory, at least in this particular theatre).

Let me know what you think.

So are you thinking that maybe it's all an illusion like on the Matrix possibly? Which would explain how that one guy can't get killed. That's very Matrix like. So maybe they are all hooked to computers. I hope it's something else though since that's been done before. Of course I think everything has been done before though. Whatever the secret of Lost when I found I want to be surprised, but yet have it fit all the clues perfectly.

I want to be surprised as well, but I can't stop trying to solve it.

My line of thinking goes something like this.

There was the original experiment on the island, headed by the DeGroots. They discovered this 'thing' called the Valenzetti equation, which is basically doomsday for mankind. The most basic points of that formula are the numbers we've become familiar with and the idea is for them to be able to alter any or all of those fundamentals to give us a stay of execution. They found what seemed to be the perfect place, brought along some of the most brilliant minds they could find/afford, and set about experimenting with numerous types of scientific and artistic ventures/games. However, there was one small but disastrous effect of the island: The magnetic draw at the center of it.

There is something called the 'Law of Attraction'. Whatever people desire the most, or focus most strongly on, is drawn to them. This law doesn't care if it is something you love or hate, merely that you focus on it. Either watch the DVD or read the book 'The Secret' for a more in-depth explaination, but above is the basics of it.

So basically, the electromagnetic pull of the island helps boost people's attractive qualities. If someone imagines, per se, a polar bear with enough focus/desire/energy/enthusiasm then one appears. Or a pet for that matter, or a jar of peanut butter, a crate of weapons, a loved one, or maybe a search party if someone wanted it bad enough. What these brilliant minds did(at least a few) was to unfortunately focus on their fears when they heard a strange noise, read a scary book, or maybe imbibed some substance(read as alcohol or narcotic-the originals were hippies after all ). These brilliant minds then unfortunately acted very irrationally doing unspeakable things (unspeakable becaude we have not seen too much of those DeGroot era people or events, at least that we're aware of).
The original experiment was basically canned, and then retrograded.

Why put people in real jeopardy when it could be avoided in some way?

Enter the information age.

Our subjects are unwilling participants on a virtual playground, with the original goal intact. Cure the Valenzetti equation in that controlled environment and mankind may actually be around a bit longer.

This was a bit long(my apologies) so I'll leave it at that for now. As always, let me know what you think.
