Smallville at Comic-Con: Al Gough, Miles Millar, and Erica Durance Speak!
By Craig Byrne

Before Smallville's panel at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, some of the attending cast and crew members participated in a brief press junket.

KryptonSite's Craig Byrne was one of the people able to speak with creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, Laura Vandervoort (Kara/Supergirl), and Erica Durance (Lois). Today, we take a look at what Smallville's creators, Gough & Millar, plus actress Erica Durance had to say... and come back tomorrow for some words with Laura Vandervoort.

For starters, Gough and Millar seem very impressed with the show's newest cast member, Laura Vandervoort. "She did a great job," Gough said about Laura's first day as Kara. "I was up there, and it was a scene with Clark and Chloe. It's hard, coming into an established series with an established cast, playing an iconic character. Erica had the same experience in Season 4, knowing that there's a lot of fan interest and curiosity about how it's going to work, but she's really great."

Gough reveals that the 1984 Supergirl movie does not inspire or affect the Smallville take on the character. "I don't think it affects what we're doing at all," Gough said. "I remember seeing it and being bored out of my tree, [even though] Jeannot Szwarc who's directed many episodes of Smallville directed it, and we certainly would do our damnedest to get Helen Slater onto the show this year."

Millar tells us that Kara's first appearance is in the season premiere. "How could she not be?" he enthused.

Gough and Millar were faced with the inevitable question of a Supergirl spin-off, and if there are any chances of it happening. "There's always a chance," Gough laughed, assuring that such decisions are up to the CW network. "They could have had Aquaman, they could have had the Green Arrow. Who knows."

Miles Millar added that the network could have also had a Lois Lane spin-off show if they had wanted one.

Another character to have a big year this year is Lois Lane, as played by Erica Durance. "Lois actually has a very interesting season," Gough said. "She is going to get hired by the Daily Planet, and there's a young editor who's been brought in to kind of age down the Planet. The Planet's kind of the gray lady of newspapers, and now they want a younger, hipper audience, so they bring in this guy whose name is Grant Gabriel, and he takes an interest in Lois. The editor likes her chutzpah and clearly has some sort of romantic interest in her as well, so they have a lot of good scenes. It's very Front Page, actually. It's two machine guns kind of going at it."

Gough and Durance also reveal that there will be scene in the season's second episode where Lois claims to have seen Kara's spaceship. Apparently the ship is seen, and then it is gone just as quickly. "Everyone thinks she's crazy," Erica said.

Justin Hartley will return as Oliver Queen for several episodes of the new season around the middle of the year. "He's somebody that Clark can go for help when he needs assistance," Miles Millar said. "He's definitely somebody that Clark can call on, and quite frankly, in the early seasons, the way he could call on Lex. Now he has a new billionaire boy," Gough added.

Is Lois over Oliver? "Oh, yeah!" Erica Durance said enthusiastically, before being told of the creators' plans.

"Lois says she's over Oliver, but let me put it this way, when Lois and Oliver meet again, there's not going to be any doe-eyed, weeping Lois," Gough promised.

"What is that thing about a woman spurned?" Erica added.

Look for Season 7 to premiere on The CW September 27.
