Just wondering what you all might think of this one? Cool, not so cool?
http://superherouniverse.com/art/data/644/seven-finished.jpg
Seven has the abilities of Seven heroes from the Bible like the strength of Samson, wisdom of Solomon, fighting skills of David, and Elija, leadership of Moses, that kind of thing. I'm still working on the whole backend story, but that's the gist of the character. I wanted to do something totally different and this is about as different as I can think of. Like all comic ideas you could probably see similarities between other heroes. The first ones that come to my mind are Thor and Shazam.

Dh being a fellow Christian do you like the idea of a hero with Biblical abilities?

It might just be me, but a Red/Black costume doesn't seem to go with anything religious to me.  Maybe White a blue?  now that I think about that would bew Judaism.  White about White and Gold? wait, that's Lectrohm's new costu--oops, I didn;t say that

Mybe a sky blue color with Gray?

Hmmm, but does the colors he has on look cool though? He's got to have Red, of course now that I think about it the Christian flag has red, white, and blue I think. Haven't seen the flag in a while.

Check that out about the Knights Templar. They have a flag(purported) that is a half black/half white background with a red cross. Maybe add some white to the costume with the gloves or boots or such. Maybe their story will add some things to the character as well you hadn't considered yet.

cool thanks, I'm not sure if I want to get too close to the crusades though with all that controversy surrounding it. I guess in a way the whole sword and shield with a cross hearkens back to that era. I almost named the character the Crusader, but then Batman is sometimes referred to as the Caped Crusader and there again it might be a little too close to the crusades.

What do you think would make a good secret identity? Maybe a kid that transforms like Billy Batson, or an adult gaining these powers, or maybe Seven has been around since the Crusades? What do you think is more interesting?

I'm thinking of the name Abel Shephard for some reason.....

You can name the comic Seven and the character something else. That doesn't strike me as a great character name. Sorry. Crusader was already used by Marvel. Maybe figure out his powers/origin/journey/enemies before deciding on a name as they will each affect the others.

How about losing the physical sword and make it something of a 'light blade'? Could be like either a lightsabre or a flat light blade that projects from forearm like Wolverine's claws. New spin on the flaming sword. If you do the flat blade you could do something similar with the shield, maybe the blades fan out to make a wider surface(which could also function as a projectile as I'm thinking about it).

Considering you've already done time travel with Time-Rider you might wish to keep that out of here, just to keep from repeating yourself.

Keep in mind that the Knights Templar branch up to modern day folklore involving the Illuminati and the Masons. Check out Alan Moore's 'From Hell' for more on that angle.

What's the story gonna be?
He has to stop the rise of the anti-Christ
-or-
He has to collect religious artifacts ala Indiana Jones
-or-
He is given the task of killing(collecting?) 777 particular 'sinners' at the behest of the mysterious Mr Gideon(tribute to The Crow while keeping the bible theme), who later shows his true self after they're collected and those sinners help form one side of the war in Heaven.(ala The Prophesy)

Well so far what I've got is this. Seven is significant in Christianity as the number of grace. I thought it might make a cool name and I don't think any other comic characters have that name.

Abel Shephard, that sounds like a great name for his secret identity. I like that.

That's one of the things I was considering, for his origins but I was thinking as far as his mission he could be more of a protector. Defeat villains but help crooks that want to get out of the business. Help street kids out of gangs, while defeating incredibly super powered villains from time to time of course. I'm thinking to be different from the dark edge of comics today, this character's stories could be more about hope but still I hope to keep a tough edge just not depress people after they read it all the time.

It's like Spider-man lately has been depressing for over a year, and it's just beginning. Sure you got to have some sad moments, but Spider-man is really depressing me lately.

I'm really having a time thinking of a secret identity personality. I've thought of a ex-street kid in a wheelchair that becomes the hero when he puts on the cross, or a old man that prays for another chance to help others, or maybe just a standard teen with problems thing, or a archeologist that finds the cross and puts it on transforming into Seven. So many options.

If you're going to deliver a message of hope, it has to be risen from despair(almost always). You're having him take someone out of the business? You're going to have to at the very least explain that business or incident which makes them want to quit. This is the realm that usually has the Batman's and Daredevil's as their protectors, and then slips into Punisher territory over the dark rift. Not that this is the only way, just the usual way. Just before Civil War hit in Marvel tearing up the New Avengers, they landed their jet in the middle of a crime infested slum to send a message to the criminals that they weren't safe to work there anymore. This was a shining moment for Luke Cage, who would probably be another excellent piece of source material for ideas for you. Luke Cage and Iron Fist books are probably really really cheap by comparison to other comics and would give you a wealth of ideas for the 'social worker' type angle.

The cape-if it doesn't have some purpose or actual usefulness, you should lose it. Watchmen gives a good lesson about super-hero fashion with a hero hanging himself with his own cape-poor clumsy fool. Maybe it cloaks him leaning toward invisibility or it transforms into angel wings or something, otherwise boot it.

As for the number itself, you could weave in as many appearances or references to it as possible like Lost does with it's numbers.

Here is a very simple formula for a secret identity til you have one of your own. Take someone you love and pick out their best quality. Now pick someone you can't stand and choose their absolute worst quality. They'll need a hobby or profession or friends tied into whatever their personal mission is(figure out mission or quest first). Give them some personal habit, flaw or quirk that has some personal meaning to you(smoking, picks his teeth, watches soap operas, whatever). That's a very easy, very basic framework.

Spiderman is going to hit rock bottom with 'One More Day'. It's always those great great tragedies that make that character grow and shine. His uncle, Gwen and Capt Stacy, his friend on drugs and eventually dying, Wolverine's associate tricking him into accidental homicide, Kraven's suicide after being buried alive, etc etc. One of the images I will never forget is seeing his reaction to 9/11, head in hands, overcome and distraught. That first issue of the arc supposedly has either May or Mary-Jane dying. You'll probably actually be better for reading it just to see how he overcomes this tragedy, this time. It's not the descent that people remember so much as the ascension afterwards and this is strictly a comparison to the lowest point of their personal abyss.

I just want Spider-man to get a break. He's had it too rough for too long.

I'll have to think on that. I kind of like capes, it does sort of have that kind of ancient mythic feel to it like Thor for example. Don't you think?

Power Man and Iron Fist was a very good series back in the 80's. I've been collecting that series slowly over the years. Anytime I see an issue in the cheap boxes at comic conventions and shops, I grab them up.

I just got the season six box set. I think you should watch the Green Arrow history featurette for more on maybe developing your character along the social issue line.

Cool idea for a character Tim!!    Definitely something that I do not recall having seen done before, I like the imagery of the sword and shield - harkens back to greek mythology.  I could not tell from the picture, is the sword a katana?  If so would the various forms of martial arts play into the story?  I know Aero is very knowledgable on such things.

I would not go there, especially when this is clearly described in the Bible.

Gotta love spin-offs!!

Actually I don't know. I got a sword file off the net to use in my Poser program.

He's going to have warrior skills that were used in Bible days. It might look something like martial arts but not exactly. I'm thinking strength like samson, good aim like David, you know things like that.

Thanks, now I just got to find time to get started.

Check it out I put a version of the 7 cross symbol on T-shirts. I'm determined to make money using art somehow. Cross T-shirts
