What DH means is that Smallville shows the beginnings of Superman's life and his involvement with Lana Lang.  The relationship between Lois and Clark doesn' come in till after the Clark gards from college and goes to work for the Daily Planet; which has been portrayed in "Lois and Clark", the "Superman" movies, and many cartoons.
