SupermanTV.net Forum / Superman / Smallville / cheap special effects?

Posted:  04 Nov 2007 01:08
hey folks, new guy here.

i asked this question on another forum and then realized i should ask the experts, so here i am.

this season of Smallville has featured some hacky cgi. especially the near miss flight scene in episode 6. the stuff looks like bad cut and paste jobs from periodicals.

i'm wondering if the producers are saving their sfx budget for some final episode blow out.

it IS titled "Superman" after all.

anybody know anything about this?

I/we are honored.

ok, #1, the effects are fricking amazing for a TV show.  Don't take them for granted, most shows don't have anything near the FX Smallville does, and personally, I didn't notice anything wrong with the plane scene.

No TV show compares with movies so if that's what you're doing, as many people do, then it's a fact that you're going to be dissapointed.

...no it's not.

Do you watch the show?  It's interesting how you believe it's called Superman when it's actually called Smallville.

what's more interesting is how you posted this under the "Smallville" section of the site...

i'm an old time SFX buff. i've watched the industry evolve over the past 40 years. i understand the differences between theater released big budget movie sfx and that of the small screen.

that said, Smallville HAS had some great sfx, as i said earlier. this season's IS NOT in my opinion as well produced. it appears rushed, badly sequenced, badly lit, badly paced, and amatuerish.

it again seems like they are saving their best for last. i assume you've heard nothing of this being the case.

thanks.

as for the last statement of my initial post, it seems you've missed the context of my question.

clarification:

i'm wondering if the producers are saving their sfx budget for for some final episode blow out.

it IS titled "Superman" after all.

the final episode of the series is reported to be titled Superman.

were you aware of this?

it's possible that they are saving for a big ending, but it's kinda stupid to cut back on the rest of the season(s) to do so.

As for the title, that's a pretty bold statement seeing as we know nothing about the 8th season anyway(Although it would make sense). I'd like to see your source.

Nothing has been posted, that I have read, regarding the final episode of the series.  The most that has been stated is that Al and Miles know how they would wrap the series.  However, they remain adamantly committed to the "no tights" policy for Clark regarding the show.

I agree with Aero, I think the effects of the show, and yes this season, have been awesome.  Granted, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I have been pleased with the special effects.

well, as i suspected, Smallville HAS suffered budget cuts due to the merger between UPN and the WB.

http://rec.mailarchive.ca/arts.tv/2007-01/11420.html

the sfx changed drastically in my opinion, but maybe they look the same to others.

as for season 8 of Smallville, Michael Rosenbaum stated earlier this year that season 7 would be the last of the series.

i'm still looking for that article about the titles to all the episodes for season 7. i'll return when (if) i find it.

I knew Tom was signed on for Season 8, I did not know about Kristen.

Actually, MR has stated that S7 would be his last season on the show (of course all that means is he wants more $$$ for a new contract) not the last season for the show itself.

no, he said it would be THE LAST YEAR, not HIS last year:

MR: Yeah, we’re finishing up our sixth year and next year is the last year.

and:

MR: This year is a big year, but next year is going to be the biggest year of all; it’s the final year and everyone’s going to see what Lex Luther is really capable of. All hell’s going to break loose!

read the interview i linked, read the responses.

My bad, I did not correctly word my last posting.  It has been reported at sites like, kryptonsite.com, than S7 would be Michael's last season on the show.  It has not been reported that this would be the last year od the show.

Well I hope this isn't the last year for the show especially with this blasted writer's strike threatening to cut it short. That could really put the series in a bad way ending the possibility of a massive spectacular ending we've all looked forward to.

I want them to go out on their own terms giving us something really special to watch.

As far as the effects. I think they've been fine, but it is true that the season finales and the season premieres have a lot more bang in them.

I was actually pretty impressed with the supergirl plane scene last week. Pretty cool I thought.

Well, seeing as they have Tom signed on for an eighth season, I think we'll see another season.  I just hope this writer's strike will not last long.

I agree the special effects on some of the flying scenes havent looked amazing by any means, but a lot of you guys are right its not the movies so it wont look as good. But in the end i honestly think a few of the flying scenes did look a little fake and corny.

i read in a few places that the 7th season would be the last, but with the writer's strike, an 8th season pretty much has to happen now.

i'll be honest, i think they've milked all they could from their writers, and now they need to take Clark to the next level.

***edit***

just started to watch last night's episode, and i'll be D***** if they aren't repeating story lines.

Well, the twist was we've never seen Lana with these abilities, and thus how she reacts to having them/what she does with them.

I agree that until last night's episode this season has been sub par. Not so much with the effects but poor acting and it's like the episodes are rushed. I thought maybe they are trying to conclude the season to a finally as it will be the last year. Then I look at Heroes with it's multiple complexed story lines and it blows Smallville away with action, suspense, acting, story lines and plot etc. I love smallville but I've been really disappointed with it up till this weeks episode...barring the sex scene (stupid).

It seems to me that the writers or producers don't have a clear minded objective as to where the show is going! Maybe that's because they may not know if there will be a season next year or not.

I'm a Lost fan. What can I say, I love sci-fi mysteries and sci-fi action. The only sci-fi I don't like usually comes on the sci-fi channel in the form of extremely cheaply made movies.

Obsession is anything but good most of the time. Ask someome who owns one. They would do anything to ditch it.Who is that P.I. on TV that has OCD? Smallville is fine, but I can't think of any other things.  What about stalking?  No stalking Tom, or Kristen tho everybody. There are online stalkers too who want to own the lives of others.
My dad had an obsession.  He didn't go out for 18 years because of it.The only time I saw him outside when I was growing up was when I saw him in the front row when I graduated.  I nearly trembled out of my dress.
AC you are not obsessed, believe me!!!  You are just a huge fan like the rest of us.  None of us would miss an episode unless the TV blew up

Probably take him two minutes to guess Clark is from another planet.

Great!.MONK with Clark!
Who is obsessed on Smallville?....Lex! (He covets the world and aims his life that way excluding the good of mankind... O.K.not yet, but he is working toward that end)...Who else is kind of obsessed on Smallville?.....And when does obsession turn to paranoia?
Posted:  15 Nov 2007 18:24
I'd definitely say Lex is obsessed. The funny thing is that successful people tend to be very obsessed. Obsession can lead to poverty too though. It's either all or nothing.

Speaking of obsession, which we are this morning....Do you think maybe the Green Arrow is obscessed with arrows?  This makes me laugh==I am thinking of those drawers he has with lined sections where each type of arrow lies waiting for him to choose.  He treats them like cherished objects I'd say, like jewels in a collection..  Maybe he lingers over them, stroking them and talking to them.  FREAKY!  Are arrows rather Freudian symbols too??  I think they are if I am not mistaken.  Especially in the "Arrows" persona. Like why wouldn't he just shoot a gun.  Why an arrow? Under Lex on Smallville I vote for Green Arrow as next  "obscessed".
Posted:  15 Nov 2007 20:00
Umm, I was going for the quote Lex took from Michel de Montaigne who said, "Obsession is the wellspring of genius and madness" in season 2.  So, if we control the generation of genius and madness, obsession can be a healthy thing.  Although, I still think a little revolution - now and then - is a healthy thing too.  Just my two cents worth!

Can't control madness David, genius is a gift, madness is a curse.  In  generation of madness becoming obsession that is  extremely dangerous and "not a healthy thing". Just my 2 cents worth.  Together now, our logic equals 4 cents.
Taking this back to Smallville...So what about Green Arrow, obsessed or no?
