SupermanTV.net Forum / Superman / General Discussion / Tree Expert Question

Posted:  11 Jan 2008 15:58
This is obviously not Superman related but I figure Scaper and DH know this one. I've got two huge trees next to my house that will cost 500 bucks to cut down.

The dude that cuts trees down that gave me the estimate said I probably shouldn't worry about it, but I wonder what are the odds that a very very large healthy tree could get knocked down on a house during a thunderstorm?

Have an arborist come by and do an assessment on the trees. Are they Douglas Firs or a Red Wood or something really tall? If they are a tree like that, if they are not deceased or rotting in the middle the chances are unlikely. 500 dollars for two large trees is about right. If they are big guys like the Red Woods or the Big Firs. I hate cutting down trees if you don't have to though. However if it's a matter human safety then it's a good idea. I always get three quotes from people when I'm subcontracting out a job. Also make sure that they are insured too. That's very important!

Hmm...what kind of trees Tim?  Are we talking about pine trees, oaks, dogwoods, which kind?

It's a walnut tree and a very large very tall tree I can't identify.

Sorry, I was getting to it. I promise.

That second video is scary. One of my trees is much larger than that one, and the video tree destroyed the house. Our bedroom is under those trees.

I'd say the big tree is as tall as the one in the last video only a lot more fuller.

Well, first off $500 is very reasonable to get the trees taken out Tim.  Also you may want to consider measuring the circumference of each tree (and estimate each tree's heighth), then give some local lumber mills a call to see what they would give you for these trees.  Walnut is a very expensive wood, and if the mills give you a good price, then just have the outfit that cuts the trees down for you figure in a price to haul the logs to a lumber mill - instead of where they normally haul the logs to.

Just some ideas to consider.

hmmm sounds good. I wonder why the tree guy didn't think of that. Seems like that would be good idea to do all the time for tree cutters. I just have to find a mill though. I'm such a dummy when it comes to stuff not related to the internet, and even then I'm hurting.

I guess I wasn't on the net much yesterday. Well the only thing I know to do is pray the trees don't fall down on me till I feel like I can spend 500 bucks or so to cut them down.

I'm not sure I'm going to find a mill or not though. We had a paper mill nearby, but it closed down a few years ago.

When the tv satellite guy from dish network came by (don't get dish network by the way) he was like saying they are dangerous. Most other people tell me not to worry though including the tree cutting guy that gave me the estimate a few years ago. It still bothers me though, but then I do tend to worry about everything.

Call around/check the net, I'm sure there are other mills about.  Still, from what you found - it doesn't sound like you'd have to have the trees taken out.

show love!!! The trees need a hug!!! Tree killer!!!

Kidding... it does sound like the trees aren't a problem. Why not have them cut back, delimbed, lowered, and thinned.

I'd cut it down myself, but I bet I'd hit my house.

The limbs aren't a problem really, it's my paranoia of having things hovering over my head while I sleep. I will have it cut down at some point. I just got to. Either that or move my house.

Get David to do it. He said he lives right down the road from you. Plus he needs a job right now too.

In seriousness, David's got an interview today for a new job. Maybe keep him in prayer today that he does well, and the Company really takes to him. I have a good feeling he will do well!

I would but I think David lives a little farther than just down the road. More like 4 to 6 hours I bet.

I will be glad to hang out with you all if you come to TN, or if I get lucky enough to go on vacation. I like to go to Canada while they are filming Smallville. That is if a person can get close enough to see what's going on.

Hey if any of you guys want to come up and visit, I'd be fine with that. I think it would be fun.

Why don't we make a fun trip to Albany in April, You, David, myself and anyone else that would like to join us. I think that would be a lot of fun. Life's short, have fun!

Yup, I checked google maps and it looks like I'm a little over 5 and a half hours away from Knoxville.  Still, Jerry and his family go over to Knoxville every so often to visit my sister-in-law's folks.  I'll have to check with Tim the next time they go, maybe I can go with them and pay Tim a visit.  Besides, Jerry and I are good at cutting down trees!!

Actually, the interview was yesterday!!  Still, I did get a call back on another job and was able to go in today to interview for it.  I am to hear back by next week on these jobs.  In the meantime, I keep pounding the virtual pavement!!
