scape, do you mean the movies or the characters?
Posted:  21 Jan 2008 12:26
Well I just didn't like Hellboy for more religious reasons I guess, just like I hated Ghostrider it really bothered me.

However DareDevil I thought was such a bad movie. In my opinion it is the second worst comic book movie ever. The Hulk was the worst to me.

I understand what you are saying about Hellboy. I'm not actually sure if it goes to far with the whole demon thing or not religiously, but from an entertainment perspective only I have to say I enjoyed the Hellboy movie, and I didn't really see that much wrong with Ghostrider. Well there were a couple of things that pushed the envelope, but the story as a whole was more like an old episode of the Twilight Zone with a big budget and superhero action.

I have to disagree with you Scaper on Daredevil. I really enjoyed it. That's actually one of my favorite superhero movies.

Probably the actual worst superhero movies of all time would have to start out with say, the very first Fantastic Four movie, that was so bad it didn't even get released to video let alone the theaters. It came out years before the big budget FF with Jessica Alba that I really like.

Howard the Duck makes a lot of people's lists as worst of all time, but I guess I'm way too much of a comic book fan because I used to watch it over and over again as a kid.

Same here.

Forgive me scaper but I find it appauling that people STILL bring their own beliefes of the outside world into a MOVIE, not to mention a SUPERHERO MOVIE.  It's fiction.  Not real.  Don't bring you outside real world junk into something made for entertainment only and ruin it for others.

Another thing, how the heck can a christain be against Ghost Rider?  Johnny Blaze didn't know who he was making the deal with.  Nor is Mephisto the devil!  He is a lord in another realm the is similar to hell, it's not the same thing!

How was the Hulk a bad movie? Except for maybe the ravage Poodle (Which I thought was funny) I can't see anything.

Had to get that off my chests--my worst pet peeve is that.

Don't be too hard on Scaper, Aero. I think it's individual taste and opinion. I respect his reasoning. I just don't go along the same line of thought with him on this particular call. If for instance the Hellboy had been some demonic creature that cut off people's heads in some blood soaked rated r movie then I'd say my Christian beliefs would prevent me from enjoying it.  Hellboy was just more along the lines of a cartoon come to life, but I still see where he's coming from.

From a Christian perspective you could take Ghost Rider either way. There was a lot of Biblical symbolism and so forth. So you could take it as a positive or as a negative I guess. I gave them the benefit of the doubt mainly because that kind western devil storyline is actually very old. There are all kinds of old stories and western songs about riding with the devil and so forth. Back in the old western days people used to name a horse that couldn't be broken, Lucifer. So to me GhostRider is kind of like a  modern western. And besides that Nicolas Cage doing that whole Elvis impersonation within Johnny Blaze's character was funny as I don't know what.

It's funny though I've noticed some atheists on the net actually take the same stance as Scaper these days. They get mad anytime there is any mention of God or the devil or anything like that in a comic book.

In theory though you are on the right track. I'd hate to think as a hopeful future comic book writer that some areas were off limits to me. Fantasy and science fiction should be able to mix and mingle just about everything from every kind of genre, reality, or fantasy there is.

I just read a Superman comic yesterday where Samson appeared as a time traveling hero sort of and ended up getting defeated arm wrestling Superman. Now that makes me mad because that would have been a swell idea for one of my Lost Heroes Time-Rider characters, and now it's been done. Oh well who is to say I can't bring Samson into my comics my way somehow.

I find it appauling that people still judge other people who make a personal decision in their own life not to do something on a fundemental right. I appreciate the fact that in Canada and the U.S. we have the freedom of religion. I never push my views on other people but I do make my own personal choices based on whether or not I feel comfortable with something. I'm one of the most free spirited Christian. So think I'm appauling because I decided I didn't like Ghost rider because he makes a pack with Lucifer and a deal with the Devil and I felt uncomfortable watching that movie, that's my right. I never said for other people not to watch it, I said "I" felt uncomfortable. I hate Judgement and finger pointing. That's one of the main reasons I actually don't go to Church.

I'll tell you another story that happened to me that someone got mad at me. I picked up these three women hitch hiking downtown. I pulled up asked them where they were going and it so happend that they lived in a place called Jamesbay. These three women were in their mid 20's and were tipsy and obviously very horny. I asked them what they had been doing, which they replied they were at a !*@#erwear party ... Like a tupperwear party but you can figure out what they were looking at and buying. Anyways these three women were beautiful, but I noticed they all had wedding rings on. They asked us if we wanted to come in and have some fun with them, the one in the back seat was looking at me and had her top half unbuttoned and was seriously beautiful looking. I asked them where their husbands were and they looked shocked but I said, you have rings right.... so the one sitting beside my friend said, Oh they are out of town... I looked at my friend and shook my head as in no way. I dropped  them off and they asked again and I said, No I can't I'm sorry.... My friend was so mad at me, but there was no way I was going in to hook up in a threesome of foursome with pretty married women. So people can judge me all they want but there are some things I feel uncomfortable doing and I'm not swayed by peoples fingers or shaking heads.

All in all, I live a very free and happy life, but I honor that voice inside me when something feels like I shouldn't do it. To me there is black and white in life. I have no problem if Tim or D.Man or anyone else goes and I'm glad they enjoyed it, however the same respect should be given to me if I decide not to watch that same movie.

...But that's just it--it's not the devil, it's Mephisto.

As for the story, that's very noble.  However (Please forgive me) I fail to see how connects to the movies.

I understand that side of it as Tim sees it this way too. I just felt uncomfortable with watching it. Maybe I'm wrong but that's my comfort zone I guess.

It's funny cause so many Main Stream Christian Organizations are so anti many movies. Like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Yet I loved Lord of the Rings, I'm not a big fan of Harry Potter and I'm amazed that they are so popular, though I have no problem with them. Even The Wizard of Oz had the same scrutiny when it first came out 50 years ago. I guess the difference to me is, I would never go public and say... Stay away from Ghost Rider!!! It's just a personal choice I make on my own.

Anyways, no hard feelings ... both ways I hope!

Hmm, maybe not black and white (since there's a whole menagerie of greys in the color spectrum - LOL!), however I would agree there IS right and wrong in life.

The bottom line here is that people have different comfort levels with different venues.  I'm a Christian too and I did not have any problems with Ghost Rider or Hellboy, though I thought Hellboy was sorely lacking in being a good story.  However, I have no problem if Scaper - or anyone else does not care to see these films.  It all goes back to the same ole story, if you ask ten different people to give you a description of a table sitting before you, you'll get ten different descriptions.

Aero, I think the connection Scaper was trying to make with his story (Bob feel free to correct me here) is that what he uses as his moral compass led him to not watch films like Ghost Rider, and that same compass led him to drop off those hitch hikers he and his friend picked up.  I have to add, Scaper, you were brave to pick up hitch hikers in this day and age - you never know what could happen.

The whole to-do about superhero films and the stories in them have been debated since their inception, and this will probably continue be the case.

actually it's to be expected, Marvel is a little bit more popular then DC with all the good films they've produced and seeing how when people think of Marvel, Spider-Man, X-Men, and Captain America are usually the first on everyone's mind.
