SupermanTV.net Forum / Superman / Smallville / Jonathan Kent - dead in this, alive in New Adventures...

Posted:  20 Mar 2008 02:13
I read somewhere that the writers felt constrained - due to previous writers, they felt they had to have certain things happen, including Jonathan Kent's death. However, in the New Adventures of Superman, Jonathan Kent is alive and well. Therefore, why did the writers feel they had to have him killed? I don't understand.

The superman mythology is not shpaed in a ball, rather a funnel.

Not everything follows a strict pattern.

The writers and producers can do really whatever they want as long as it stays in between the lines of what really is superman, i.e country boy, boy scout, as well as similar characters.

That's what I like to know for sure.

Aero is right.

I have theory though. The reason they killed off Jonathan wasn't for continuity. It was to go in line with the Superman Returns movie which followed the first two Christopher Reeve movies. There had certainly been a long time precedence for Jonathan Kent being alive since the 1980's from the comic books to all of the TV shows like Superman the Animated Series and Lois and Clark. It was almost like everybody started saying nothing counted anymore except for what had been done in Superman the Movie.

I too agree w/ Aero. Also, that'd be really sweet if Clark was a Boy Scout...ooh! Better! If he was an EAGLE SCOUT!!!

The absolute basics can't be touched- Jor-El launches his son away from Krypton as it's about to collide with that sun and the baby lands here, gifted with powers because of our sun. The lines the creators have to stay within generally alter (however slightly) to fit in with whatever project they happen to be doing. We have comics where Clark lands in Russia instead of the US and becomes Batman instead of Superman. Pa Kent survived the entire run of Lois and Clark but died in the first Christopher Reeve film and the 100th episode of Smallville. Ma basically withers away on the farm missing her husband and Clark in the Reeve films but on Smallville she is now a politician, etc etc etc....
People may enjoy paintings but they rarely watch the same one over and over and over with renewed vigor.
