Gough & Millar Exit Smallville
April 3, 2008
"Smallville" creators and executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have announced they are not staying on for the eighth season of the show.
From a letter posted on superherohype -
As the creators of "Smallville" we look back at 7 amazing years. We look back at 152 episodes. We look back knowing that the show will continue into Season 8 without us. After much heartache and debate we have decided it is time for us to move on.
Over the last 7 years we have had the honor of working with a remarkable team of people here in Los Angeles and in Vancouver. We have been blessed with a wonderful cast who we have watched mature with admiration and affection. We have been rewarded with a fan base that is as loyal as it is vocal.
We are incredibly proud of our work on this show. We achieved what we set out to do. We never compromised our vision. We leave knowing that "Smallville" is the longest-running comic book based series of all-time. The show was featured on the covers of Rolling Stone, MAD magazine, TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly. The pilot had the highest-rated premiere in the history of the WB. Even in its seventh year it is still the #1 scripted show on the network. "Smallville" is watched by millions of people in hundreds of countries and in dozens of languages around the world.
The show's success is a credit to a fantastically talented group of people. We wanted to take this chance to single some of them out. Our writers – your work speaks for itself. James, Jae, Rob, David – the backbone of our team in Vancouver. Joe Davola, Chris and Shelly – remember those Friday night brainstorming sessions? Len Goldstein and Steve Pearlman – thanks for believing we could do this. David Nutter – for giving the show your magic touch. John Litvack – when the knives were out, you always had our backs. Ken Horton – our Yoda. Peter Roth – Smallville's biggest fan. Melinda, Michael R., Paul M., Susan and Suzanne – for steering us through 152 episodes. Greg Beeman – your passion is an inspiration. Jordan, David, Garth, Carolyn, Bob & Lew – and everyone at the much-missed WB. Paul Levitz, Greg Noveck and the guys at DC Comics. Lisa Lewis – our very own soccer mom/mafia accountant. Michael Gendler – aka mega-counsel. David Lubliner – we can finally focus on features now. And last but in no way the least, Renee Kurtz – the smartest TV agent in town, we would be nowhere without you!
Finally, to the fans who have stuck with us through the highs and the lows: know this – we never stopped fighting to make this show great. Thanks for watching.

comicscontinuum.com had this about it
Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, creators and executive producers of Smallville, announced on Wednesday night they are leaving The CW series.
Gough told The Continuum he and Millar are focusing full time on feature films. Their film credits include Spider-Man 2 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
"We are currently working on Jungle Cruise for Disney," Gough told The Continuum, "and producing a movie for them as well, which I can't talk about because there hasn't been an official announcement, but it starts shooting in May."
Smallville has been picked up for an eighth -- and likely final -- season by The CW. __________________

Gough and Millar: Bye to Smallville
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Really shocking news: creators Al Gough and Miles Millar are quiting Smallville. TV Guide is reporting that the due behind the show are ending their 7 years run with it on this season, letting the 8th in the hands of new people.
"Giving props to the CW series' "remarkable" production team and "a wonderful cast who we have watched mature with admiration and affection," the duo say, "We have been rewarded with a fan base that is as loyal as it is vocal. We are incredibly proud of our work on this show. We achieved what we set out to do. We never compromised our vision. We leave knowing that Smallville is the longest-running comic-book-based series of all time [and] was featured on the covers of Rolling Stone, MAD Magazine, TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly. The pilot had the highest-rated premiere in the history of the WB [where it originated]. Even in its seventh year, it is still the No. 1 scripted show on the network."

UPDATE: The New "Boss" has been announced, once again thanks to TV Guide.com we know who is, well in this particular case: are, the people behind the show next season: Kelly Souders, Brian Peterson, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer will be the team responsible now on for the show.
Sources have since informed TV Guide that a pair of producing teams — Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, and Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer — have been named the new show runners/executive producers, leaving Smallville in the good hands of four longtime writers for the show.
That, in our opinion, its a relief, cause the show will be in hands of people that have been there since the beginning and the vision that Al Gough and Miles Millar had won't be completely gone with their departure.
We wish "AlMilles" the best luck in all the future projects they'll have and we thank them for the good moments and for this great show. Smallville wouldn't have been where it is now if it wasn't because their vision.
And good luck to Kelly Souders, Brian Peterson, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer in their new task, we the fans will be supporting you and we will be here to the end. We are excited to see in which direction the show will be going from now on.

Imagine the handicap of having to write a season with NO Luthers! I think that is why our writers begged off and quit. Without Lex as Clarks nemises; it's going to all go downhill. I have not got my hopes up for S8! I wish them a lot of luck, and they are going to need that, and more.

"In a joint statement, the CW and Warner Bros. TV say, "Al Gough and Miles Millar have been great partners and instrumental in the development and success of Smallville. While we are sad to see them go, we are very excited to announce that executive producers Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson will helm the show next season. [They] have been writing for the show for the past six seasons, and as producers for the last four years, they have played an integral role in the ongoing creative evolution of the series. As showrunners, they will continue to deliver the compelling storytelling that Smallville fans have come to expect and love."

I think they are basically passing the torch. In reality I'd bet Gough & Millar didn't even add that much to the show every week for the last few years.
The show has such a big creative staff. It will do fine as long as they can keep coming up with stuff to write about. __________________

O.K. Here is how I feel about it. Not that anyone gives a s---. ....the writing has not been that good, many here will agree! The show hit it's stride in earlier seasons.
LOOK what has been done to the "Lana" character, for instance. How miserable was that?
If the writers had no way to go, they killed off potential interesting people right away. Literally, murdered them all. Come 'on. How creative is that? Draw a line thru the name and that was that for them.
Listen, Clark cannot get his big butt up in the air,(7 yrs. now) and his lovemaking sucks.(Lana says as much, prefering Phanthom Bizzaro!!!) Dang!
The worst all-season slaughter of a character was Lana.I can't stand to look at her, (a once attractine girl).. Kaaarazzy! They even use weird lighting now with her.
Kara has not developed substantialy whatsoever. She seems "spacier" by each episode.
Not dumb enough? They kill off LIONEL??
What remains constant and excellent, CHLOE. Maybe she can singlehandidly SAVE season 8. If she can't; nobody else can. Nobody.
Lois? Never, ever developed into a woman for Clark. Nobody believes that "couple". The Green Arrow brought out the best in her.
Smallville is totally screwed and it will take a genius to make it work.
Lex stepped out to grow his hair. Who blames him? Could any amount to cash coax you to go bald for 8 years of the BEST, good-looking years of your life? He wants to try more things, movies and a mullett.. Maybe he realized Smallville is not Smallville as everyone loved it, and he is going to cut his losses instead of his hair
As for me, I'll cut mine too and switch my poker night to Thurs. if things don't get better. I have really enjoyed Smallville up to Season 7.I haven't enjoyed S7 much at all. I really hope the best for Season 8.

dude, stop complaining, S7 had its ups and downs, but i liked it all thoughout! If you a true fan in the first place you would of sticked to it. Dont even get me started on how you didnt pay memory to "Almilles", cut off whatever you want, its your loss.
Besides that, Al gough and Millar Milies were legends, the fact they made smallville so great (and the rest of the team!) has it's credibles, we might not be on the forum if it wasnt for them including the team! Tributes and kudos to them both leaving behind a great show, even if some people here dont agree i know that they got to admit some moments in smallvile was just too koo. Goodbye to Al gogh and Millar milles. __________________the kenman

Re-read what I said. My complaint is what SEASON 7 did to the CHARACTERS (I outlined each) and the kill-off of good new people that may have peeked interest...and I plainly state I liked the earlier seasons!
And I wished them well for S8.
I really think I am done after the suicide S7 was for ME. Obviously the characters are real important for me to the enjoyment of the show; they have disappeared as far as I knew them in the better episodes from 1-6.
We have conflicting opinions about Season 7 only.
I know my girlfriend, a writer, could have done it better. She just sent me up a story for S'ville I've got some ideas to add when I go down to AZ. Maybe together we can try a script.

I hope Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson's vision of Smallville will be more SUPERMAN friendlier than Al Gough and Miles Millar.
IMHO Al Gough and Miles Millar shot their load in Season 2, by far my favorite season of them all. __________________

As for me, I don't intend to buy Season 7, and I have all the others.
I probably won't even watch any more Smallville!
I guess I'll stick with Reaper, because it has some laughs and good characters. Like Smallville once had.
Smallville is so cold now, it leaves me the same.
I Enjoyed the run. Ya'all take care.

Well it might be like a whole new show. You just never know about these things. It's like life people come and go except for a few main characters. __________________

Yes I will miss the Luthors, but maybe now we'll see some other villains from the comics. We already know Doomsday is on the way. I sure wish they'd go ahead and put Clark in the Superman costume for that Doomsday fight. __________________

I think it is working towards that now--and the flight, but maybe not yet this Season? And we know, no cape or tights (right?)What KIND of modified suit will he be in then? Do you know?

I couldn't keep a straight face. The concept of 'our" Clark Kent in tights, underpants and a cape is mind blowing to me. The only Superman I "know" is the Smallville edition, so I would actually be rolling on the floor-- Anbsolutely no joke! (and no insult to your opinion implied.) Wonder if anyone agrees with me ;no one ever does.

Well a lot of people probably have gotten used to Clark without the suit and wouldn't want Clark to put it on, but I think everyone who is big time into comics or all the older versions of Superman want to see him put the costume on. It's a matter of what you are used to and if you are more of a Smallville fan alone or a Superman fan in general. __________________

You know I don't understand how in the world they are even gonna keep the show going without Lex, Lana, Chloe(well actually she isn't even a true uperman character from what I hear. So I think we should be fine without her around. I don't really know) But I mean now you have also Lionel gone, plus Martha is in Washington D.C being the Senator. I mean look whose left: Lois, Jimmy, and Kara(if she is even gonna be in the 8th season which I hear she is). What are they gonna add new people and get on with the true uperman story FINALLY.....I hope anyway? I' am very curious to know what they are planning for the 8th season and how the heck they are going to do it with all these characters being gone?
Em I right or do I make no sense? __________________

I think Chloe is in for Season 8. Maybe she'll be some glue to hold things together. For me, as I said before, without the Luthors, it won't BE Smallville as we knew it, and I hate the idea. But maybe somehow it will work, like you and Tim say "new characters"- etc.-but I can't think how it will work without Lex. He is a MAJOR "main character" and needs to be there.

NOT having Lex as a villain opens up new possibilities. The show won't be confined to Clark doing good while Lex is secretly off doing evil.
Maybe Lana can be the new villain!
Lex was more interesting in the early years when he was half-good and half-evil. You never knew what he was going to do! (Like in "Red" when instead of running off to Metropolis with Clark he tells Jonathan where Clark is!)
Now Lex is more of a stock comic book villain, one-dimensional, few if any surprises.

That IS exactly the way I feel about it myself. Why the earlier Seasons were so much more interesting.
He was Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde. Always a mystery which way he would take it.I never was into comics or Sup movies and my interest is just all Smallville, unpredictable. Those were the "good ol' episodes"
IF & When Clark wears underpants and tights I will be laughing so hard I won't be able to see the TV.
Tim can't wait, and I will be goin' like this

^ that's what they've said they're oing to do.
I liked seeing the spark in the Lois and Clark relationship in Apocalypse. That's was a push in the right direction. __________________"Any man can overcome adversity. If you truly want to test a man's character, give him power."
