With a heavy heart, it is my sad duty to report that Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) will NOT be back for Season 8 of Smallville.
An open letter from Michael Rosenbaum about his departure from Smallville...
Dear Smallville Fans,
Well, it's been seven wonderful years. Your support is what has made Smallville so successful, and I appreciate you all more than you know.
That being said, it is time for me to start the next chapter of my life and career. I hope that I gave you some enjoyment over the years, and that you found my portrayal of Lex Luthor to be satisfying. I am truly grateful, as Smallville fans are the best fans out there. I sincerely hope that you will continue to follow my career through my hair growth period and beyond.
I'm very excited about what the future holds, but certainly, Smallville will always be a part of me. I will definitely miss the greatest crew in the world, and the wonderful cast that has been like a family to me.
Thank you Al and Miles for creating the show. Thank you writers, producers, directors and editors. Thanks Tollin, Robbins and Davola for being there for the pilot. Thank you Peter Roth for employing me for ten years. Lisa Lewis, I miss you already. John Glover, thanks for helping me feel more comfortable touching other actors, while acting. Bizarre, but helpful.
Mostly, I want to thank Greg Beeman for directing the "Oh Sherry" video, by Steve Perry, back in the 80's.
Thanks crew. Thanks fans. Thanks Smallville.
I love you all,
Michael Rosenbaum

Funny to the very end...
On a more positive note, he can now do more movies(like the excellent 'Poolhall Junkies') and we will have seven seasons on DVD. Let's also not forget that he can still guest for at least one episode next season. Cheer up people-it aint quite as final as it seems. __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Question is though he's going to go through all the trouble of shaving his head bald again to just appear in a episode here and there. __________________

After seven years it should not be all that big a deal to shave it again. Question is whether or not they'll have a good enough story to bring him back. __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea Mr Creedy and ideas are bulletproof.

Can you imagine Rosenbaum wearing one of those fake bald skull caps? __________________

Too bad they did not have Gene Hackman guest star on the show, before Michael Rosenmbaum left. Still, no surprise here, Michael has made it abundantly clear (in previous statments), that he's been tired of having to have his head shaved. Also, he expressed that he wants to pursue more humorous roles. Well, good luck to him. __________________The Bible is so powerful. It's not to be left on your shelf. Yeah, that would be cool to have Gene Hackman make a guest appearance. He could play an older relative of Lex Luthor, or maybe even play an older Lex Luthor from the future. __________________

Well maybe we should ask SmallvilleFan1 why that didn't happen with Gene Hackman since she "is an extra and knows what goes on in the show, but can't ever reveal anything " __________________

I was shocked to learn about this in Entertainment Weekly.
Maybe Michael could wear a fake bald cap and as Lex hold the world hostage as he demands ONE MILLION DOLLARS!
And maybe Gene Hackman could take over for Michael and appear each week as Lex!

Aw, that's sad. Thanks Michael for Lex--you were/are awesome.
I wonder if Chloe uses her power on Lana...
I'm glad we've gotten what we have out of Smallville so far, if they put every superman actor before into Smallville, it'd ruin the show.

3 weeks go by and you're still on her case about that? give it a rest. lol
I'd also like to see supermom before season 8 ends...*cough*writerspayattention*cough* __________________"Any man can overcome adversity. If you truly want to test a man's character, give him power."

whatever--to me it's more fun to believe she is an extra then isn't. She doesn't gain anything by saying she is and we gain entertainmen value. __________________"Any man can overcome adversity. If you truly want to test a man's character, give him power."

Just because Michael Rosenbaum is leaving, can't there still be a Lex, played by someone else? (Not Gene Hackman.)
What are you hearing?

no...there won't be another lex for Smallville.
If they did that they'd loose way to many viewers. __________________"Any man can overcome adversity. If you truly want to test a man's character, give him power."

I think that no Lex won't make the show as interesting as when he was always lying about some evil plot. __________________

Man I just found this site after reading that Lex won't be in season 8. How are they going to work around this one? Lex has ALWAYS been there after Superman in early TV show, the movies, the new TV shows the new movie. Is there not away for you to do other things and still be in Smallville? You can wear a hair piece like in Superman Returns or something?

Nothing's ever written in stone. Justin Hartley was supposed to be off doing another show entirely, possibly unable to come back as Green Arrow. It never got picked up and now he's a cast regular this season. If there's a free week and a good enough reason, Mr Rosenbaum shouldn't have a reason not to play it through just one more time. Perhaps a good enough story on film would do that too. __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea Mr Creedy and ideas are bulletproof.

I wonder if he's moved. Doesn't Rosenbaum have a house in Canada close to the set? __________________

I thought Lex was more interesting in the early years when he was half-good, half-evil. You never knew what he was going to do: tell Jonathan Clark had run away to the mansion or try to learn Clark's secret from Sam Phelan.
Lately he was more of a stock standard comic book villain. (Yeah, I know, duh! The show's based on a comic book.)
