Where is Superman Headed?
Source: Variety
August 19, 2008
Variety's Anne Thompson reports that Superman: Man of Steel is in a holding pattern at Warner Bros. Pictures as the studio figures out what to do next. Here's a clip:
They too believe that the last movie didn't break the mold and wound up in some kind of middle limbo. Today I was told that it is a priority at the studio to find the right direction and if Bryan Singer is willing to do that, fine, but if he gets in the way, he may not stay on the project. There are no writers working on a Superman script now. The studio wants to figure it out. "It might be better to start from scratch," one exec admitted.
What do you think? Should they continue the story from Superman Returns or completely start over?

That's a good question isn't it. It's obvious that Singer has the ability to put together a quality product, but does he have his pulse on who Superman really is? That's my question. Superman Returns had a lot right with it. It had the music. It had effects. It had some good acting. I think the biggest issue with me after all was said and done was the ending seemed kind of less than inspiring. I sure would have liked to have had some huge Super extreme fights with a few supervillains. Plus while interesting the whole kid thing seemed like it should have been an elseworlds story for Superman. Nobody should try to make Superman relate to a modern world. Make the modern world relate to Superman. Don't change him, show how the world reacts to somebody with the boy scout code running around doing good all the time. Now that's the interesting take. If Superman is just like everybody else he's Spider-man. That position is already taken. __________________
