Warner Bros. Confirms Superman Reboot
Source: Steelsheen
August 22, 2008
link : http://www.superherohype.com/news/supermannews.php?id=7609
Quote: Just a few days after this article was posted, Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov has told The Wall Street Journal that the studio is going to be reintroducing Superman. We assume this will be similar to how Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk was a reboot of Ang Lee's Hulk. Here is what the article says:
Warner Bros. also put on hold plans for another movie starring multiple superheroes -- known as "Batman vs. Superman" -- after the $215 million "Superman Returns," which had disappointing box-office returns, didn't please executives. "'Superman' didn't quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to," says Mr. Robinov. "It didn't position the character the way he needed to be positioned." "Had 'Superman' worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009," he adds. "But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all."
The article also talks about Warner Bros. adapting other DC properties over the new few years. "By 2011, Mr. Robinov plans for DC Comics to supply the material for up to two of the six to eight tent-pole films he hopes Warner Bros. will have in the pipeline by then," it says. Those projects will likely be about single characters at first, and will be darker much like The Dark Knight:
With "Batman vs. Superman" and "Justice League" stalled, Warner Bros. has quietly adopted Marvel's model of releasing a single film for each character, and then using those movies and their sequels to build up to a multicharacter film. "Along those lines, we have been developing every DC character that we own," Mr. Robinov says.
Like the recent Batman sequel -- which has become the highest-grossing film of the year thus far -- Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as "The Dark Knight." Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.
The studio is set to announce its plans for future DC movies in the next month. For now, though, it is focused on releasing four comic-book films in the next three years, including a third Batman film, a new film reintroducing Superman, and two movies focusing on other DC Comics characters. Movies featuring Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman are all in active development.
We'll let you know as soon as the studio has announced its plans for future DC movies. __________________

In my humble opinion realism is good for a Superman movie, but not dark. Dark is not good for a Superman movie unless it's kept strictly for the bad guys, and not Superman himself. Superman has to remain a big boy scout with super powers. He shouldn't be a push over though. He can be serious and not be dark. Think of an updated George Reeves.
Good guys smile unless they are Batman of course. __________________

I never made it a regular practice of picking up Action Comics but there was one I was advised about and did pick up. Maybe you guys remember it-from only a couple years back(2002?). I'm a bit fuzzy on it but it was a great read. There was a group of vigilantes making themselves famous by killing the bad guys and somehow they had decided Superman was a criminal for not killing the bad guys so they go after him. They basically have him at gunpoint near the end, with cameras rolling and Supes gives a pretty interesting speech about why heroes don't kill.
Maybe something along those lines for a darker film? __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea Mr Creedy and ideas are bulletproof.

I don't remember that issue pak. I'll find it eventually though.
Quote: Everybody knows how much I HATE "DARK"--What a disaster--a dark "Superman" The dumbest idea yet! Believe me I know what you are saying. What I imagine could be done is to have a serious take like the 1950's TV series did the first season. Superman was all business, but he was still Superman.
Got to have that certain something that Christopher Reeve had like a light in the midst of darkness. That's what Superman is. He's not a guy with ax to grind. He's hopeful, optimistic, and even happy. The first half of his life was lived in a small town in the country where pessimism really doesn't flourish like it does in the big city. So Supes has got to have that happy good guy streak that never quits. The kind of thing that drives a villain like Luthor crazy. I always kind of picture Luthor as somebody hating Superman for the fact that Supes is always a happy nice guy and Luthor himself is just miserably evil.
Superman has to be lighter or otherwise there is no contrast between him and Batman.
Just leave out the silly jokes like Superman 3's red light scene, and Gus Gorman falling off a building kind of thing if they want serious. __________________

Maybe they don't mean to make Superman darker so much as the threat he faces or the more dire the consequences? We haven't seen a live action Doomsday yet, and Darkseid would certainly make quite an enemy- and probably quite an impressive film. Imagine an X-Men movie if they had to actually face Mr Sinister or Apocalypse. Really huge over the top fun if done right. __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh. I certainly hope they don't make Superman all dark. Doomsday or something like Doomsday would be great. The villains can be as dark as they want as long as Superman stays true to what his character has always been. __________________

Of course we all notice the trends just go darker everywhere you look. Woman and guys too-- wanna look goth, the news has no light moments like I remember growing up. Models' look like coke addicts,(and I don't mean Cola!) hidious tats all over everybody.10 year olds mom's let 'em, get pierced!!! A girl I know well, (pretty) had a huge green snake tattooed from her mid back all around her shoulder. Depressing in "IN"--good is "out" I TOTALLY hate it. Even Santa went dark in one of his recent feature films. NOt funny!! I think it failed. What next. "Evil Christ"???Where and why did this all begin?? What has happened ??Concepts that are negative are fashionable now.. I still like TV's "Reaper" (Devil) but that show is actually funny and well-written and the new season is a "go". I also hear teen suicide is UP. With all this darkness---no wonder.Please---not Superman too. can we protest somewhere??

I like this line from Pak's link.
Quote: Kelly's point here is not that heroes should be ideal like Superman... simply that they should try. They need to try and live up to something. __________________

I think that has to do with the 'evil' team there getting their own book. Again, not my normal reading material but it was a great story and that was their first appearance that I know of. Might still be worth it for collecting purposes at least. __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea Mr Creedy and ideas are bulletproof.

I'm debating on whether or not to go for the original or get a reprint just so I can read it. __________________

Again, great story. Don't bother with the original unless you're banking on the new series raising its value long term. __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea Mr Creedy and ideas are bulletproof.

I remember that I was so pumped when I first saw the teaser trailer for Superman Returns after an episode of Smallville in late 2005. I was happy they kept the John Williams theme. When I finally saw it in the summer of 2006, I wanted so bad to like it, I overlooked some of its flaws. But the truth is, and I've watched it a few times over the last couple of years, (fastforwarded through a few scenes) it's pretty boring. A complete reboot is in order I think. Although if they announced that they decided to keep Singer on as director and let him finish his story, I'd still go. As for a dark Superman...get the heck outta here. Superman is supposed to be an inspirational character. Remember that great line from the end of 'Superman: The Movie' when the warden says: "This country is safe again Superman. Thanks to you." Superman replies: "No sir. Don't thank me, we're all part of the same team." That's a message the world could use about now, I think. As for the villain...Lex would have to be in it but he could be more behind the scenes maybe pulling the strings of the main villain. The main villain could be Doomsday, Brainiac or Bizarro. Pakman mentioned Darkseid. There's a number of great stories they could tell. If they sorta recreated the animated Superman oomsday, that would be awesome. Of course it would have to be a little deeper, in terms of content, but if they recreated those fight scenes...woohoo that would be WICKED.

I would really like to see him cut loose on film. No worries about breaking a fragile human. No worries about property damage. No reason to pull punches.
Neo vs Smith in the last Matrix flick....brawl of a lifetime, full range of powers, no limits of gravity.
We need a Darkseid or a Doomsday or the comic version of Brainiac for this(I liked Smallville's Brainiac but he was a bit of a wuss-sorry Spike). __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea Mr Creedy and ideas are bulletproof.

Superman needs to feel like he's literally fighting for his life and the life of everybody else at the same time to go all out. A Doomsday battle would fit what you've described. __________________
