SupermanTV.net Forum / Superman / Smallville / How "Smallville" Has Lost Its Way

You probably have your own thoughts on how "Smallville" has lost its focus.  These are a few of mine.

One, Annette O'Toole has stated on the DVD commentary for "Crusade" that many people watch to see the family, but Martha and Jonathan are both gone now.

While it's nice that Clark and Kara are family, and it's interesting to see Clark take on the Jonathan role by teaching Kara to use her powers, it's not the same.

Second, Clark doesn't seem to be moving in the direction of becoming Superman by, one, developing as a character, and two, returning to college to pursue journalism.  Or at least taking another career path to becoming a reporter the way Lois is.

Would it be so bad, for example, if Clark became a reporter for the Inquisitor?

I had an idea for an alternate timeline story where Clark kisses Lana in the loft, ends up working for Luthorcorp (since his character has been drastically altered by making a move on Lana while Whitney's dad is sick), and is nearly exposed by Lionel.

He then works as a tabloid reporter who teams up with the guys from "Supernatural."

Also, what is Clark still doing on that farm?  It's like "Sister Act 2:" there's no real reason for Whoopi Goldberg to be in that convent.

And when, oh when, is Clark going to learn to fly?

Should "Smallville" have wrapped up in Season 7?

I do see they may be stretching a point or two to keep the show going, but it's all fun. I'm just curious to see where they end up.

while season 7 did lack a bit, most of what you have posted is just a matter of opinion.

I do admit, I miss O'Toole, but the clark and Kara interactions have made up for it, in my own opinion

Clark is on the farm cause he made a promis to his parents that he'd keep at it, it's a family thing.

If Clark was able to fly, then show would have gotten real boring, real fast.  He has enough powers, he doesn't need flight, and not having it is what made Smallville, Smallville.  But for the last season, i think they should put a lot more super jumps, if not a couple of flights.

We had the family dynamic for awhile; now it's time to explore the last son part of the mythos. Part of what makes Superman such an iconic character is the emotional side. After all, if it was all about the powers and the bad guy getting a beating all the time, there'd be no stories left to tell by now. There's also the whole romantic notion of the 'lone wolf' who forgoes his own happiness to pursue his quest and such.

We had the freak of the week crutch for a while, to further develop his powers, give him some experience and confidence. He outgrew the need for it.

We had the Luthors for a good long while. While I miss them already, we now make room for new villains and we'll still have (for lack of a better term) the 'essence' of Lex the businessman in the new Tess character and the 'essence' of Lex the archnemesis in David Bloom/Doomsday. While all Clark's efforts could not halt the unstoppable rise to Lex the villain, something tells me Clark is actually going to help build the villain of Doomsday this time, unwittingly of course.

Maybe I'm just being optimistic as I had no intention of watching a Smallville with no Luthors, so my hope for the new characters  probably outweighs what they actually might bring to the table. Hope springs eternal.

I wouldn't say the show has lost its way as much as it has just altered course. It's a journey, not a destination.

In my strong opinion, yes I do agree that the 7th season could have been much better with better story lines, but they got a little off on trying to make sure they stuck to who he is meant to be.
Bring his biological mother was a cool idea, but they could have made her stay longer to help him out.
And they made Kara be a regular which was a good idea, but they made her too much of a 'damsel in distress, but can look after herself' type figure.
And they focused in too much on the Veritas (I hope I spelled that right) I mean ya it's a part of who Clark is meant to be and help him know his heritage but they kinda made it too dramatic and too many people being killed again over it.
It was cool though to see previous people in the uperman legacy making an appearance. I wish they could have had the guy from the new uperman movie make an appearance as a Kryptonian or a future him trying to prevent something like Lana from happening or about Brain dude, that would have been cool.
I just think that it was a good season, but it could have been a lot better. If they could have had the 2 more episodes I think they could have done a lot more with this season.
