8 Things you Need to Know about Season 8
We chat with the cast about the new season
By Dave Lake
MSN TV
"Smallville" turns 8 this season, and to celebrate we caught up with the cast of the venerable sci-fi series to talk about the new season, the departure of some major characters and the emergence of new ones. In short, eight things you need to know about its newly launched eighth season.
1. The premiere jump-started the season right where the cliffhanger left off, with the fall of the Fortress of Solitude. This prompts the Justice League to head to the Arctic to look for Clark Kent, who it turns out is being held captive in Russia, and who, because of the fall, has been stripped of his powers by Jor-El. In the Arctic, we also meet one of this season's villains, Tess Mercer, the hand-picked, new CEO of LutherCorp.
2. The show has serious longevity. Eight seasons is an eternity in TV years. "Probably the reason this show has lasted so long," said Aaron Ashmore, who plays Jimmy Olsen on the series, "is there is so much to work with. They always have new ideas from the old stuff to draw on and make work." Maybe, but that's selling the show short. Lesser series based on the same mythology didn't survive nearly as long (we're looking at you "Lois & Clark").
3. The series suffered two major blows after the close of Season 7. Michael Rosenbaum, the show's Lex Luthor, didn't re-sign. Neither did longtime cast member Kristin Kreuk, who will return this season, but in just a handful of episodes. "It's always sad when the whole group isn't there," Erica Durance, who plays Lois Lane, told us. "But everyone certainly has their own journey." Ashmore elaborated on the loss: "There's no doubt that Michael and Kristin were the foundation of the show, but I think that in a certain respect it's interesting to have new people come in. There's new energy, new story lines that you can develop and play with."
4. One of two new major characters is Davis Bloome / Doomsday, played by Sam Witwer. "Doomsday is the only character who ever killed Superman," the actor told us. "DC Comics came up with this guy because they wanted to have someone who could not just match wits with him like Lex Luthor, but someone who could get into this huge knock-down-drag-out and then take him out. He's someone the fans love to hate." Bloome is new to Metropolis, a loner paramedic who is suffering terrible blackouts where he's not sure what he's been doing or where he's been. He slowly comes to the realization that he is someone else entirely during his time away -- Doomsday -- who is someone he morally objects to. Witwer wouldn't say exactly when viewers would finally get to see Doomsday hit the screen, but he did say it would happen eventually. "'Jaws' was a better movie when you didn't see the shark that much," he offered. "But you will eventually see what you expect to see." Would he ultimately be played by Witwer? "I can't comment on that," he laughed, "But they have some really cool stuff planned.
5. Also new this season is the character Tess Mercer, the new CEO of LutherCorp, played by newcomer Cassidy Freeman, whose character sets out to find Lex. Though one of the newest cast members, her reception by the dedicated fans of "Smallville" came at last July's Comic-Con. "It was amazing," she said of the experience. "People were so passionate and interested and wanting to share their experiences with how the show affected them." And who wouldn't jump at the chance to play a villain, she asked. "There's always the option of redemption. They're always much more complex. And even though they might not be as liked, they have more possibilities."
6. The theme for Season 8 is duality, which will be played out in a number of story lines. There are the obvious ones: Clark and Superman, Davis and Doomsday. But there is also the developing relationship between Lois and Clark, who now work across the desk from each other at the Daily Planet. "You'll start to see their relationship sort of weaving its way in and out," Durance said, though mostly her character will be interested in getting the scoop on the new superhero she's been tracking. "She's blissfully in the dark about people's alter egos. What she is going to become aware of is that there is a blue and red superhero, and she has made it her mission to find him and get the expose."
7. Season 8 has been rumored to be the show's last. And if it is, how will the show end? "It's going to have to be the transformation from Smallville Clark Kent into the real Superman," said Ashmore of his thoughts surrounding the ending. "I think that's what it has to be, this really defining turn from being this young man into being the superhero we all know. That, to me, would be the perfect ending."
8. "Smallville" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the CW.

^^ And for how long?
There's always the possible spinoff, turning Smallville into a show called, Metroplois or something.
But that's wishful thinking. __________________"Any man can overcome adversity. If you truly want to test a man's character, give him power."

They need to bring Clark and Oliver into a new show called the Justice League after Season 8.

Lionel's dead and Lex is missing. Even if Lex is 'found', it probably won't be the actor that played him all this time on Smallville. Don't even wish for it.
DC has plenty of other characters and territory to pursue should they wish to for another show, spinoff or otherwise. __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea Mr Creedy and ideas are bulletproof.

Hey now, there's no harm in wishing. Even though the odds are against me. __________________"Any man can overcome adversity. If you truly want to test a man's character, give him power."

Every new episode would probably be a repeat and it would probably be dreadful. Wishing can be harmful.
Quote: Firestorm would be cool.
Absolutely. Green Arrow or the Lantern corps or Nightwing would be excellent too. Zatana or a new Wonder Woman (considering Whedon was supposed to do a movie with her before it fell through)series could tap into the audience left from Buffy and Spike. A Catwoman series might work if they learned some valuable lessons from Birds of Prey. Booster Gold even has potential if they just mind what that type of audience will clamor for. Imagine for a second what a live action weekly show on Hawkworld would be like. So much potential. They just have to attack it from the right angles. __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea Mr Creedy and ideas are bulletproof.

They are doing a Wonder Woman movie. They've cast her already.

Wait, DC is coming out with an Animated Wonder Woman movie, but as far as the live action one, I thought they were haing trouble?
EDIT: Just checked IMDB, 2009 is the animated one I believe with Keri Russell doing the voice of WW. Director is Lauren Montgomery.
As for the live action one, it's set at 2011. No actors/actress set and only some of the writers are listed. __________________"Any man can overcome adversity. If you truly want to test a man's character, give him power."

Oh I didn't even the see the part about the director. Don't think I'm familiar with any of this guy's works.
Yeah I think she's a good choice too.
Have you heard about the Green Arrow movie?

DC I think is afraid they'll ruin what they have with the Dark Knight so they are just sitting still quivering in terror instead of making more movies. They got to remember, "No guts no glory". __________________

They can make more mallville, if they just write out good episodes that follow Clark becoming uperman. Instead of these dumb episodes that don't follow the story and get off track. THEY NEED TO STAY ON TRACK. I don't want this to be the last season. Too soon. I know 8 years is a long time, but I want to see Clark transform into uperman. I want to see him trained and learn everything he has to. AND THEN THEY CAN GO AHEAD AND END IT. __________________

O.K. Here is what I now "know" about Season 8.
It is entertaining but not "enjoyable" for me.. There is nothing so far that compares to the way that I was anxious to see the episodes of Season 1 thru 7.
It just doean't come thru (for me) being that depressing and dark. There was one special and outstanding thing about Smallville that you could depend on before the "big change"--You felt "up" and alert after watching it. It was fun, no matter what! Will it become now like every other"detective-like show", death everywhere?! Boring monotone dialog and all expressionles. I cite tonights episode as an example. I hope that it will have some "life" driven into it. There is hope. I know the characters are adult and now different/mature--but couldn't they have just a bit of a good time ever?

haha, that episode got me hyped for nothing. When I saw the smoke creature I was really annoyed--I thought it was going to be a doomsday episode.
The scratch on the guy's face though was enough for me to be satsifed luckily and the shadow creautre was a clever idea. __________________"Any man can overcome adversity. If you truly want to test a man's character, give him power."

Hey! How cool was that about Michael Rosenblum winning 3rd place in the American TV Awards for "Best Villian"?
And what's he up to these days? If he's out of work maybe he'll come back for at least some guest appearances. Smallville may be the only award he'll ever win. Maybe it will give him the impetus to come back!!
