| Well, fridgemd25, they used an unknown in the first Superman movie, I think his name was Christopher Reeve, and I beleive that is their thinking behind using Brandon in the part. Apart from the fact that Tom does want the role he is playing a teenage Clark Kent and not Superman. Besides if you put pictures of Tom and Brandon side by side they don't look that dissimilar, both bearing a good resemblance to Chris. | ||

| I honestly feel that they made a good choice when the picked Routh. I'm glad they left Welling for Smallville, because quite frankly, I dont want to see Smallville The Movie | ||

| I have no idea why Tom wouldnt want the part. I hope that is just a rumor. A while ago right after the season 4 finalle, I started searching for downloads of season 5. (I couldnt wait. I didnt care if it was illegal.) Unfortunetely i didnt find anything on season 5. But I did find info on the new superman movie. I was on a chatroom like this and a number of people said that Tom tried out but didnt make it because "He wasnt superman material" Screw that, he has plent of superman material. it makes me mad they didnt put Tom in the movie. But I dont think the WB had any thing to do with the movie.Personally I think they are going to do a seperate smallville movie about the story how he becomes superman. Plus Tom doesnt have to wear that costume for a while if the make his full transformation to superman at the end. It shouldnt be much of a problem. Dont you guys think? | ||

Everyone agrees Tom would make a great Superman. Whether or not he ever dons the costume on the big screen is really unknown. It doesn't seem to be in the plans at the moment, but it's never over til the fat lady sings. __________________ |

| vince31294, I think Tim hit it on the head when he said that where the majority of the movie is being filmed would be the biggest problem for Tom because he works in Canada and most of the movie is being filmed in Australia. If everyone takes a good look at all the actors they asked to do the role then everyone will see they all look pretty similar so whether they went with Tom or Brandon or Henry or whoever then I am just glad he is back on the big screen. | ||

| Jon im not so sure tom works in Canada. I mean he has done plenty of movies plus the smallvile show. I dont think those things are filmed in Canada. Plus if Tom does work there they should still have the same lex. Seriously Kevin Spacy would be a horrible lex luthor. Oh and you guys can email me at lpf2@aol.com aswell as chatting online. Maybe we could im sometime. | ||

| Hey vince31294, what I meant by the fact that Tom works in Canada is that is where Smallville is filmed for I am guessing about 6 to 8 months of the year and yes I realise that leaves the other 4 months to possibly film the new superman movie. However they started filming the new movie in April 2005 and had a 1 month break in October so I think that means it would have taken them at least 2 years to make the new movie which might have worked but alas they didn't go that way so we ended up with a Brandon playing the big screen superman and Tom left to play the teenage Clark Kent in Smallville. By the way I think it would have been difficult for Tom to put on 20lbs for superman then lose it again to play teenage Clark because he isn't big enough to play an adult superman, he is about 195-200lbs. Smallville 101, I have been a Smallville fan since I heard they were going to make the series 5 years ago but truly believe that Brandon deserves a shot at making the role his before they decide to replace him with Tom or whoever. | ||

Alright,
Here's what the deal in my book. Tom welling should be superman..(what is this Clint eastwood bulSh*t anyway). Grabted Reeves was and will remain the number one Superman in my book along with anyone else who is a superman fan. Even in Smallville Reeves passes on the role to Welling anyway. Yet Welling is already known for his role and I think he is happy with that. Just like (And I hate to bring it up) Batman, they tried someone different every time for each movie. I think it was a horrible idea, but they were testing out who would play the best at the part. Lets give this new comer Brandon a shot at it. Lets see what he puts out and shows the world. If they make this movie anything like Batman Begins then I believe it will do very well. I for one can't wait till june to see it, so until then lets keep chattin. |

| i think it would be so much easier to use the smallville cast members for the movie, because they have evolved and know thier characters really well. but then again, we have to realize that they have their own reasons for not wanting to be in it. | ||

I agree with most of the posts here! No offense to Brandon Routh, but I think pretty much anyone who tries to play a good Superman on film while Smallville is still running is dooming himself to be in Tom Welling's shadow. To millions of fans, Tom Welling *is* Superman right now, by character if not yet by wardrobe.
I'm not sure how true it is that Tom Welling himself refuses to wear the suit. If that is indeed the case, I sincerely wish he'd change his mind. I know I'd be extremely proud to have the opportunity to fill Chris Reeve's boots! Those of you who would love to see Tom Welling as he might look in the Superman costume, come and check out the Red Cape Gallery at http://student.fgcu.edu/ghbontra/RedCape/redcape.htm ! I've used the awesome power of PhotoShop to create an entire series of high-resolution, versatile, and dramatic images of Tom Welling as Superman! These pics might help to sooth the disappointment and/or outrage at the fact that Tom won't truly be seen in the Suit. Here's a sample pic:

| I think she will do alright, AliasChloe, however I didn't realise she was only 22 because I thought she was about 28. I suppose that with a little make-up they will have her looking about 26/27. I am not a big fan of hers so can you fill me in as to what other movies she has done? | ||

I admit that when I first heard they were doing a Superman movie - my initial thought was that Tom Welling should get the role of playing Superman because he has done so well on Smallville. But as I was reading through these posts, I have read over and over how people are asking themselves why they chose to have a no name actor over Tom Welling and that it would be impossible to fill his shoes...
I think you are all forgetting one thing: Who was Tom Welling before starting in Smallville? I never heard of him and I am sure that most people did not know of him either. Yet he was given a chance and did very well. As did Christopher Reeve - and even Micheal Keaton for the first Batman Movie. So much criticism of how he would never be able to play that role - too much of a clown and so on and so forth... Now - I think I'm gonna look foward to seeing how Brandon Routh does - I have faith in the director...he did a great job with X-Men and picked some great people to play those roles...why lose faith in him now? | To everybody out there in messageboard land who would prefer Tom Welling to play the role of the new big screen superman then this next extract from an interview will very much disappoint all of you. I can't tell you what media outlet did the original interview was done but it was reprinted in the latest edition of our weekly newspaper TV guide and it has Tom saying that he turned down the role of Clark Kent on Smallville three times because he thought they wanted running/flying around in tights. However Miles and Alfred talked him into playing the role by reassurring him he would never have to wear the tights which is now a part of his contract. | ||

That is a little disapointing that he would be so dead set against ever wearing the suit. I was hoping he'd wear it at least once the last episode of Smallville. I mean after all these years we deserve to see Superman on the show at least once. __________________ |

| Yes well if you think about the show is more about superboy than superman so if they get to the last episode maybe he will have it on for one small scene. This would also mean they would have to end the series pretty much where superman flies off towards Metropolis in superman1 after he has had a deep and meaningful with Jor-El. However he wouldn't be able to dissappear for 12 years maybe 12 days or 12 months might work better for the series but 12 years is a bit long to go missing for, I reckon. | ||

Yeah the missing time part of the Superman movie isn't really a part of the rest of Superman stories in comics. I can't imagine sitting around for 12 years listening to Jor-El discuss Krypton. __________________ |

| What Tim, you mean you wouldn't find listening to Jor-El rabble on for 12 years interesting? No, americo xxs, it is apparently because he doesn't want to parade around for the whole world in tights, more than anything else. | ||

Well you know now that I think about it I've heard Jor-El say the same thing over and over again for longer than that on rewatchings of Superman on videos and dvd.
I think your right about Tom Welling. He doesn't want to be seen wearing the tights. Can't say I blame him. I'd be embarrased. I'd have to be the first Superman to wear blue jeans with my supersuit. __________________ |

| Yes well I am guessing Tom is a little self conscious about being seen in the tights but that idea is quite strange because he has gone shirtless more than a few times and even naked in one scene on Smallville (unless that wasn't him infront of those flames). It would only be a small step to go to the tights. I wonder if the reason Chris didn't have any problems wearing the suit was because he was so scrawny before he got the role that once they started filming I think he would have thought it doesn't matter now because I have the body for it now. | ||

If Tom Welling is refusing to wear the Superman suit because of self-consciousness, then I think he's being a little immature about the whole thing. True, a male in ballet-style stockings isn't exactly the most fashionable thing in the world, but superheroes are a completely different story. If done right, there is nothing at all undignifed about skin-tight costuming on a male figure. Especially not in the case of an icon like Superman. Superman's the very picture of dignity! To date, I can think of five very contemporary actors off the top of my head who have willingly donned tights while playing very dignified characters: Tobey Maguire, Christian Bale, Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans, and Ben Affleck.
If TW's reason is more to avoid typecasting (i.e. always being thought of as Superman and not taken seriously in any other role), it's a little more understandable, but it still doesn't quite hold water with me. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never heard of Christopher Reeve making any fuss over being perpetually thought of as Superman. Why should Tom? Plus, it's a little too late for him now. Even in "Cheaper by the Dozen," I had a little trouble thinking of him as "Charlie Baker: average teenage Joe" after a year or two of watching "Smallville." No matter how well he performs in different roles over the years, I think his most recognized role will always be Clark Kent, whether he likes it or not. If he's dipped his foot this far into the water, he might as well just dive in. Resisting it now is kind of pointless, in my opinion. |
