SupermanTV.net Forum / Superman / Superman Returns Movie / Tom Welling should play Superman

Posted:  19 Dec 2005 16:51
P.S. I think Brandon Routh looks more ridiculous in that monstrosity of a costume than Tom Welling ever would in a more classical, well-designed Super-suit.
Posted:  28 Dec 2005 03:54
look up at all six supermans at the top of the page, who looks the best??: duh, tom welling, one reason because he's lacking the S and cape!!!
Posted:  28 Dec 2005 12:05
Who the best looking superman is completely subjective AliasChloe. What, or in this case who, looks appealing to someone else is different to what or who is appealing to you. I think you will find whoever is wearing the suit and playing the character of superman gives some erroneous appeal to the women(and some men)of that particular time period. If I remember correctly Chris had as much sex appeal to the women of the late 70's and early 80's because of the fact that he was playing superman. I think that you will find Dean had women falling in love with him as superman because of the way he played the character, a more human and emotionally vulnerable superhero, aswell as his looks. Dean made the plenty of entertainment and womens magazines sexiest people lists in the 90's. I think if we all wait until the movie comes out it will be interesting to see how much sex appeal Tom and Brandon have up against each other because I am sure that some magazine will have a poll that asks the readers as to their opinion on the two men. It would be funny if they did do that and the people voting didn't truly know who the men were and had them equal with the percentages because if you put them in the same street clothes then it might be difficult to tell them apart.

ok I feel Tom has the best looks to be a superman in the new movie put him up against Chris and George he looks like he fits the role. But the WB decided no to use Tom because they did not want to Associate the new Movie with Smallville, which I agree with. Plus Brandon also has an older appeale to him, he does not look as young as Tom. And this Movie is suppose to leave off where Superman 4 left off. So that is what I think
Posted:  31 Dec 2005 02:13
No, Superman182, it doesn't pick up from where S4 left off it actually goes into the movie sequence in between 2 and 3. Aparently the story goes that after superman's battle with the three supervillians he decides to go and try to find out if there any more survivors from Krypton anywhere in the time/space continuom and the journey takes him about six or seven years before he returns to Earth. If you did their make-up well enough you could easily have them looking like 19 or 20 year olds afterall I think Tom is slightly older than Brandon anyhow. Come on now people I think it would be great for the two current actors playing Clark Kent and Superman to do a movie together playing brothers. If you don't like the Twins sequel then maybe a modern Kane and Able set in mid-west U S A with them playing farmboys trying to keep the banks from taking their legacy.

What Superman Returns lacks IS a star like Tom Welling.  The following and fan base, the history and familiar look.  It's retarded to fill the red boots with anyone else.  Huge let down for me and millions of superman fans.  Boooooooooooo.  Sucks.  Way to ruin a great idea just for profit.
Posted:  06 Feb 2006 10:47
GenCobra, you may want to read other parts of the message board to see why Tom wasn't in the role of superman and will never be in the role of superman, only Clark Kent.
Posted:  06 Feb 2006 10:54
As much as I LOVE Tom Welling's portrayal of Clark Kent and I wouldn't want him to play Superman at least not in the movie coming out this year.  That would ruin the transformation that is taking place in SV from Clark to Superman.

Maybe 5 years down the road I'd love to see him don the role of Superman!

But for now Tom Welling = Clark Kent not Superman!

I Agree With all u guys that TOM WELLING should be Superman he is perfect for the role of Superman but Brandon Routh Does Superman ok

First of all, I just want to say that Tom Welling is the most gorgeous white man I've ever seen in my life. He is too damn hot!! He is THE Superman of this generation. I don't blame him for not playing in Superman the movie.  To me it seems like they are pushing really hard to get it out in theatres before Smallville is off the air which is kind of strange. To me is seems rushed and thrown together. True, I think Tom would have been perfect for the movie because he's got the height and build for the costume, but I've heard he wasn't too fond of wearing the tights.  From the pictures I've seen of the other guy (don't even know his name and don't care..) who's playing in Superman the movie, he looks so plain. I won't remember him.  Tom probably felt like the movie would turn him from beefcake to fruitcake.   I agree with a few others on this site that this movie is gonna be totally gay.  As I said, I don't blame him, he's got a good acting career so far, so he doesn't want to mess that up and he probably knows that the Superman movie is going to really suck.  Since it's not related to Smallville, he'd have to keep switching back and forth between the Superman movie and Smallville and even though he'd be Superman in both, it would confuse the audience and be hard to keep them separate since he's playing basically the same character. I wouldn't want part of it either. I think they could have made Smallville a movie instead of this Superman crap.  Some TV shows do take it to the next level and create a movie based off of it, but sometimes it doesn't work because either the directors run out of material and it just seems like the same old thing over and over but in movie form and it ends up being a flop. So perhaps leaving Smallville the way it is was the best choice. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Anyway I know I won't be going to see Superman.  I probably wouldn't even rent it either. If I ever see it it would be by mistake or I'm in the middle of changing channels.  Definitely a ! Booooo.   Oh did I forget to mention that Tom is so damn FINE!!!??
Posted:  06 Mar 2006 04:02
Just give Brandon a chance. I thought that Smallville was going to be the worst show on TV before I started watching it. Tom is a fine actor, but he doesn't want to play Superman. End of story.

And if the movie sucks, then it sucks. It happens. Remember Superman IV?

i'm sure this has already been mentioned, but i didnt read all the replies.  i read in an article that they DID want tom welling to play superman at first, but they said if they did, they'd have to cancle smallville, and they did NOT want that.  believe me, I WANT TOM WELLING MORE THAN ANYTHING AS SUPERMAN... but i dont think it's worth canceling smallville over! haha

cancel*
Posted:  20 May 2006 16:39
I read that too, marrymetom. That's why I'm not disappointed that he did not get the role.
Posted:  20 May 2006 17:43
What is wrong with you people?  "Tom Welling should be Superman!...Tom Welling should be Superman!"  Tom Welling is a fine actor who's PLAYING A ROLE ON A TELEVISION SHOW, YOU MORONS!

I'm sure if he HAD WANTED the role of Superman in the new film, he probably could have had it, but he's said that he wants to have the freedom to pursue a career after Smallville where people don't typecast him...know what that means, you snivelling crybabies?  It means he doesn't want people to not be able to see him as anything other than Superman, which is something that Christopher Reeve had to deal with for his entire career after he started playing the role.

You whiners really need to grow the hell up...there are a lot more important things to be getting worked up about other than "Tom Welling should play..."etc.  But, I guess, what d'you expect from a bunch of pre-schoolers.

Listening to all your drivel almost makes me embarassed to be a Smallville/Superman fan...almost!
Posted:  20 May 2006 21:13
Easy there. I think the major factor in people wanting Tom Welling as Superman is because it is already known that he can carry the role. Superman is a pop-culture phenomenon that has existed for all of our lives (for most of us) and I think we demand a level of familiarity from the actor that will portray the man of steel. I guess it makes us feel all warm and fuzzy or something. Or at least it is comforting to know that our beloved hero is in good hands.

I'm sure that Brandon will do fine. At least that's my story... you don't bad-talk a guy whose brother is a cop in your town. After watching the second trailer, I can see that there will be a lot of things that I will tolerate that will offset the stuff that I find stupid (i.e. being a sequel to the Chris Reeve franchise).

Again, if it's a bad movie... then it's a bad movie. These things happen. Superman will live on.

BurningEl time to switch to decaf, pal.
Got to remember complaining and wishing the movies had this actor or that or the story line went this way or whatever is part of the fun building up to a movie. It's not like politics or something so you know don't be so uptight, dude.

Can't we all just get along?[smirk]

Yeah, we can...sorry 'bout the rant.  It just burns me that people are willing to pre-judge an actor or a movie, sight unseen, especially when it's Superman.  As rabbitspam says, if it's a bad movie, then it's a bad movie, but let it prove itself.  I only get that worked up about two things...Superman, and carnies.  Small hands, y'know, smell like cabbage.  btw, decaf gives you diarrhea.
Posted:  22 May 2006 17:57
Really decaf gives you diarhea? Didn't know that. I'm a cocoa cola drinker myself. Trying to switch to water though, less calories.

What was we talking about?

Oh yeah, I totally understand I get worked up on political issues so I try to avoid them when I want to be in a good mood. The Superman costume thing had be upset for a little while, but I'm thinking what the hey , I'll wait for the movie and see what happens. I think the effects are going to be awesome to the point the costume might not even matter.

The other day though I was in Walmart and saw a toy costume for the new movie and it was so dark and bland. Just didn't make sense. Superman should be bright and cheerful not dark and depressing.

There is one thing that really makes one wonder. Why is it that in a time where there are more technological advances than ever before, we have so much food we are all getting fat, we have more forms of entertainment than any previous generation, that we have our heroes, movies music, and TV shows get more and more darker and depressed. Does the human race as a whole have a thing about being happy?

Given your last paragraph Tim, your question is quite a relevant world wide topic of consideration. I think that over the last 15 years or so, the kids growing up in the world have been seeing a more darker approach to the way they see themselves and the world as a whole. I think that the advances in technology have helped us to be more reclusive as a species because look at what you can buy without leaving your house these days. People, especially young people, think that this great because it makes for more convenience but it also distances them from their fellow human beings and society as a whole. It also makes them very lazy. Which is very strange because then some parents wonder why the child doesn't want to do anything but sit in front of the computer and talk to their friends or play games. I, personally, much prefer to get out of the house play some sport, go to the gym, go the movies or watch some football(rugby league) live at the ground. Now to be fair, I will get in front of my computer or tv for short periods of the day but I don't use a a reason for not being sociable towards my fellow human beings. There is a time and a place for certain things but it must kept in balance with other aspects of your life or you will become very boring. I say that last bit to my 15 yo nephew who prefers to sit in front of a computer and play games instead of going to the live football game with me because his parents used the computer and the tv as a babysitter. Now a lot of the kids who read this are going to say maybe he just doesn't like football and to that I would say that he used to go to games with me but became more reclusive the more he sat in front of the computer. That, "learned behaviour" as Dr Phil puts it, is now coming back to bite my sister in the bum, big time, because that is all he wants to do with his spare time. To anyone under the age of 19 or 20, I say get out of the house and meet new people some of them you will like and some you will not but at least you are getting of your bum and doing something along the lines of socialising with other human beings.

Intelligent discourse...I love it!  I'm fascinated by the topic that you've raised Tim, and the points that superjon has made are, in my opinion, absolutely spot on.  I think that given the technological advents available to today's generation, and the generations of kids from the last say ten-fifteen years or so, specifically the internet generation, or Gen-I as I like to call them, they have a tool which allows an anonymous, safe form of social interaction whereby the individual is free to create an online persona that is idealised.  I'm not saying that my response to Tim's query is that the internet is the culprit, but I think that there is a trickle down effect from my last point, in that when faced with actual social interaction, the blanket of anonymity that is enjoyed by having an online persona isn't there, and said individuals withdraw into their shyness or percieved discomfort at dealing with real flesh and blood people.  Throw in the fact that news and information, both good and bad, but these days mostly bad it seems, is instantly available for discussion and perusal, there is an awareness of the strife in the world at a street-level like never before, and I think that all these things are making for a growing world-view that is generally becoming grimmer and grimmer...they say life and art are often reflections of each other and the times in which they exist, yes?  Feature films and television are probably the most dominant forms of art to come out of the 20th century, and I think that that darkness that you talk about, Tim, is what we're now seeing in our art...or not?

The fact that Tom Welling is not playing Superman will be one of the biggest setbacks for this movie in terms of box office numbers (they just lost all their female fan base).

The fact that Brandon whoever is playing Superman (I get nauseous even thinking about it) will be the number one reason this movie sucks and does much to tarnish the image of Superman embodied by Christopher Reeve.

For those of you speculating on what kind of actor Brandon will be as Superman, let me drop the big fact stink bomb on that one.  Brandon Routh is a very very very bad actor and that is a fact.  I watched One Life to Live when he was on there playing "seth".  My overwhelming reaction was, I don't know where the hell they got this guy, but they need to get him the hell off this show, now! I turned the channel whenever he came on. Watching him act, is the human equivalent of watching white paint drying, boring to say the least and bland as balnd can be.  He has no personality.

Imagine my horror and shock some years later to see his face and his body draped in the Superman gear.  My heart dropped.  I,like many, hoped that Tom Welling would end up playing Superman. Not since Chris Reeve have I felt an actor more befitting of the role than Tom.

I don't know the reason why he's not playing Superman, but bottom line, WB f*@ked up.  Comparing the budget of making Smallville and the budget of making Superman Returns (Millions), the cost to WB for not using Tom Welling in this movie will be millions which is very intersting since hollywood is all about the benjamins, I can't see how they so obviously shot themselves in the foot with this one. Nevermind all the emotional angst they will cause legions of Superman fans.

I will go see the movie, out of duty, but I already want my refund.

I think Christopher Reeves pretty much passed the Superman baton to Tom Welling, what better endorsement than to be hand picked by the greatest SuperMan ever!

Yeah I had a few friends and one of my brothers asking me why didn't Tom play superman in Superman Returns? They are not even Smallville watchers and some how they picked up on this subject thread. LMAO

Strong. Powerful. Invincible. Superman is a hero worth looking up too, and to find him. We need only…
Look up in the sky.
