Enter Toyman...exit Lana.  It's the description for 'Requiem'.  Check it out.

The CW's Official Description: "Requiem"
Airs February 5, 2009 on The CW

SMALLVILLE BRINGS IN ANOTHER DC VILLAIN — An explosion at LuthorCorp kills all the Board members and injures Oliver (Justin Hartley), who was there to announce the merger of his company with LuthorCorp. Oliver believes that Lex is responsible for the blast, but Clark (Tom Welling) and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) learn that the bomber is Winslow Schott (guest star Chris Gauthier), a toymaker and former Queen Industries employee with a grudge against Oliver. Michael Rohl directed the episode written by Holly Henderson & Don Whitehead (#3T7464).

Toyman episode...I'm kinda dreading this but it has potential. I'll reserve judgment for now.

I'll reserve judgment too, there's a lot apparently going on, and GA is in there, but I hate toyman vs superhero stories. Every superhero show has them.

Dang where's Lois?

Great question. Last we saw is her heading off to be with Jimmy on his way to the hospital, dying after the confrontation with Doomsday. Chloe, his wife, on the other hand, just basically went back to work and day to day operations with Isis. Either they have it planned that way for a very good set of reasons, or...disappointing, ain't it?

Remember, Chloe said she was off to see her husband and relieve Lois of her nursing duties?  She only had a day or so to rest after the brainiac fiasco and that was during the episode bulletproof.

I think that's how went.

This is it.  The return of Lex...sort of, the debut of Toyman and the final episode EVER for Lana Lang.  How WILL it all go down??

That's definitely Lex, even if it's not Michael Rosenbaum, Toyman has always been lame previously so don't expect much, and they can figure out a way to bring back Lana in the future if they need to-it's one of the few constants in comics, nobody stays dead permanently.

Jonathan was played out by Brainiac for one episode, which they could do again(and I have a pet theory of my own how to have him back as something of a regular character) and we know Lex has no problem cloning people he's related to. Look at Heroes, between Claire's blood and time travel, they can bring back anyone and mostly have.

Watched the episode.  Toyman was creepy.  Lex *(played by Kevin Miller and voiced by Matt Adler) was diabolicale as ever (R.I.P., you SOB) and Lana's exit:   WHY?!  Looks like Lex got the last laugh.  Great episode!!

I'm wondering where the heck is Jimmy Olsen? Chloe is married and we haven't seen one second of her new husband. No honeymoon?

Where's Lois through all this?

I would have been sad for Clark last night, but dang it we've been here already 5 times. How long is the dude going to go all nuts over Lana only to lose her in the end. Time for Clark to move forward. Time for Clark to embrace his destiny as Superman and get hooked up with Lois.

Well I was still sad for Clark, the scene in the loft was pretty sad. That was a hard way for it to happen, only thing worse would have been death. Man Lex is evil!

Ohh so it seems I was kind of right, looks like Clark will basically settle for being with Lois beause he can't be with Lana who he loves more then anything.

Even though this is being posted way after the episode aired, there are spoilers contained herein. Do not complain to me if you happen upon a spoiler-you've been warned.

Gotta admit-was much better than I anticipated.

Toyman was interesting enough so that he could be used again certainly in small enough doses.

We know for sure that Lex isn't really dead, even though it certainly looks that way.

Lana's departure was kinda painful to watch with Clark fighting his way through the pain just to hold her one last time. As beautiful as that moment should have been, I was a little disgusted by the kiss. Maybe it's just me on that one.

What actually troubles me is that Ollie committed murder(even if Lex comes back later-Ollie carried out a plan to kill him and was satisfied with his results). Not only that, but he made Chloe an accomplice after the fact. Even if they both know it's for the greater good, they themselves have not come around to facing any sort of penalty for their own involvement. I know it's just happened and they could each come around at a later time, but as it stands right now, I'm calling foul on that one. Also consider that we know from the spoilers that Chloe is gonna be harboring Davis at some point and possibly 'feeding' him on top of it. Finally consider how she told Clark she missed having Brainiac's enhancement, which is odd for someone who was basically kidnapped and brainwashed to become a force of evil doing it.

To sum that up, the producers have been doing a much better job than I expected they could this season, but I have to seriously question what lengths they're willing to go to just to retain viewers. It is nice to see boundaries pushed, and I certainly hate lazy writing, but these type of shows with long established characters have equally longstanding guidelines that absolutely should not be crossed or ignored. They're coming dangerously close to ruining what they worked so hard in building up. Then again, maybe I'm just blowing it out of proportion and they've already got it all figured out to a level that will satisfy even me-I have underestimated them before.

I think the ending scene was perfect except for one missing part.  The classic Superman defeated look.  Where he's on his knees and his forearms on his thighs, hands open as if holding somthing that isn't there, and head bowed.
otherwise the ending scene was perfect imo.

I like'd them throwing in the kryptonite ring.  And that scene with oliver holding proves that lex is still out there.

as for ollie commiting murder he's always been a ends justify the means type of guy--even in the comics.  granted, murder is taking it far but i think they writers did that to give it a more realistic style to the show.  Human nature would take over anyway, and this isn't a comic.  plus the fans would know the lex isn't really dead anyway so that's a point in their favor.

I was OK with G.A. doing the deed and killing Lex if he wanted to.
I think Lois ran away with Jimmy for some reason.  Not sex. But ya never know. LOL!
I too believe Lex is not "dead" if you call what he had "life"!!
I liked the Toyman and hope to see him again.  That was actually diabolically "fun"!
The Lana kiss was WIERD w/ the Kryptonite shattering Clarks face! BUT IT LOOKED GREAT!
The new Kypptonite filled Lana does mean that Lois is second best!  But you know, I can't accept Lois for Superman even as 10th best.  So so wrong! If the show goes into a 9th Season and Lois's contract is up!(I hope, I hope) maybe the new writers will get really, really smart and cast us a new, right for Clark, Lois.???
Actually I am very satisfied with the new writers and think the stories are an improvement from last year. That is a surprize.

I always thought of Green Arrow and a hippy flower power kind of guy. At least that's how they sort of described him in the Justice League cartoon. I think he said he was an old lefty. I would think capital punishment would not be something he would take part in as a left winger.

Smallville's GA seems to have a different personality to me. Has anybody read any stories where GA would do something like kill Lex?

Longbow Hunters/Mike Grell Ongoing

Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters #1, the gritty redefinition of the Green Arrow. Cover by Mike Grell.See also: Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters
In 1987, DC Comics launched the character into a new ongoing title as part of their mature audience comic line. Written and illustrated by Mike Grell, the revamp was launched with the controversial Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters mini-series. In this three-issue prestige format limited series, a routine adventure against a group of drug runners led to tragedy as Black Canary was captured and brutally tortured. In response, Green Arrow murders his girlfriend's attackers. The mini-series would also introduce the enigmatic female Japanese archer, Shado, whose family suffered in a World War II internment camp.

Under Grell, Green Arrow would abandon the use of his trademark gadget arrows and relocate from Star City to Seattle, Washington. As the series was part of DC Comics' mature audience line, it took on a more gritty, violent, and urban tone, with Green Arrow often using deadly force against his enemies. Grell wrote the series for the first 80 issues, downplaying the super-hero aspects of the characters and isolating Green Arrow from the rest of the DC Universe. Green Arrow abandoned his mask, and Black Canary lost her sonic scream power. While crossover specials were conceived to allow other writers (most notably Denny O'Neil, who wrote Batman and the mature audience comic The Question) to use Green Arrow, Grell deliberately downplayed all super-hero ties to Green Arrow, to the extent of having longtime Green Arrow friend Hal Jordan only appear in civilian form and the name 'Green Arrow' being used in the series [3] .

In place of the super-hero community, Grell created his own supporting cast. In addition to Shado, Grell introduced Seattle police Lieutenant Jim Cameron, who was disgusted with Green Arrow's vigilante actions (including killing criminals); renegade CIA agent Greg Osborne, who began to monitor Queen's activities; and mercenary Eddie Fyers, initially introduced as Queen's adversary, but later to become a companion of necessity when Green Arrow was forced to leave Seattle after false accusations of aiding terrorists. Grell's run ended with Green Arrow #80, shortly after Dinah dumped Oliver.

During this period, the writer also redefined the character's origin in the four-part 1992 limited series, Green Arrow: The Wonder Year. Grell portrayed Oliver Queen as a thrill-seeker who inherits his family business at a very young age. Changed by his sojourn on the island, Ollie decided to take up crime fighting as a means of rebelling against his responsibilities. During his first adventure in Star City, Oliver Queen meets an old flame, Brianna Stone, a former college radical who warns him if he continued to carry his bow, he would one day have to use it for real. Grell's limited series also established Queen's attraction toward dangerous women.

Re-writing heroes goes all the way back to the 1930s Hardy Boys, with most of the stories being rewritten by many different authors.(Still a popular boys series)
Republished comic book heroes would need to be re-written because of black characterizations, and ethnic slurs in the originals which carried thru even to the 1950s.
Has any Superman Comic that may have been republished had to be edited? I wonder?
Just a random thought about how characters like Green Arrow and others can change for the times to be more "real" and relevent.
Tim says(up a few posta) he used to think of Green Arrow as a "hippy, flower power guy" OMG--that sure HAD to change. Just imagine that now.  LOL

I liked Lana for the first two or three seasons, then I got sick of her. Is it just me or is she just not the superhero type? I don't like the idea of her being as tough as Clark.
Posted:  08 Feb 2009 14:39   Last Edited By: pakratmak
As soon as Lana got tangled up in the 'eternal battle' between Clark and Lex, she became a power player, especially after being on both their sides. She became something of a composite of both of them by being involved with both.

As for the super power thing, I have read comics now for over 30 years and I can honestly say the way she got hers was a lot better than most of the laboratory accident variety. She actually went out to get hers in a strangely similar way to Batman. The process itself, of bonding a power suit to their flesh, is quite unique as well.

One more thing to consider is how Clark, who is virtually indestructible and only has the physical weakness' of magic and meteors, needs some sort of way for a villain to get at. In this, he's no different than anyone else who puts on a costume to protect their loved ones. If you can get to the people the hero cares about, you have leverage on that hero. They actually had Lex do one of the most horrible things I've ever seen done to a hero, now that I've considered it some. He didn't kill the loved one to drive the hero with the loved one's memory, giving the hero strength or a cause or some new found resolve to throw back at the bad guy. He didn't kidnap the loved one to gain some small one time exchange as ransom, which is just too too small for the character Lex became on this show. He didn't even make an enemy out of the loved one for the hero to fight against, because that sort of thing never lasts. The loved one always remembers somehow and comes back around, usually stronger and smarter for the experience. Lex carried out the impossible, via remote no less. With Lana alive and well, and Clark knowing she feels exactly as strongly about him as he feels for her, they must forever be apart. The one person he loves above all others must go on living a life without him. He hurts, she hurts, they both know each other hurts and Lex....

surely not dead, but gathering resources to him...

smiles triumphantly, knowing he was victorious in one thing...

he has permanently injured the strongest person alive, permanently weakened him, and best of all, his old friend knows it was him...

and this victory will one day be the opening Lex needs to rid this world of Superman forever.

-or something simlar without all the drama and menace, it is only a TV show after all, good friendly family fun-
