I believe Faraday lied. He's telling them a soothing fairy tale instead of the more unpleasant science.(not that I'm a scientist myself, but 'fate' doesn't seem to work in reality.)
Unless Ben somehow survives that shooting, which would be odd for a professional like Sayid to not have done it properly, the continuum has to course correct to a string of realities without an adult Ben. It ties in with what Seanie here was talking about with the Dharma center not having it's signs torn down and the numbers loop and such.
Perhaps getting shot was the event Richard was waiting for to let Ben into the Hostiles' group. That now begs the question of whether or not Richard has the means to see the future.
Maybe dying on the island is actually a prerequisite of some sort to begin with for several of the key characters- being 'born again' in the greatest(if not creepiest) possible sense? __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh.
