I think as Ben pointed out, the command to kill Alex was directly from Widmore(for whatever reason) and not directly from Jacob as Widmore seems to have pretended.
The island has given many, if not all of them, some level of guidance if not explicit instructions. Some of them spot dead relatives to chase like in Jack's case, some get reminders of their past like heroin from heaven in Charlie's case, others get spirit animals like Kate's horse and the Polar bear Sawyer took down, others face down smokey like Eko did and more recently Ben-with different results, others like Locke get direct commands from the likes of Jacob and Jack's dad. Some even get orders off the island like all of Hugo's imaginary friends and Michael's visits by Tom and Christian.
I think the island is some sort of wicked cross of a ouija board and Egyptian sacred burial ground or even temple of death-for better or worse.
That carving(painting?) looked as if Anubis was consulting smokey, or vice versa. I think it might also possibly be saying they're the same being, as through a transferrance. Aside from that, I'm also reminded of how the tarot card of death is actually a representation of change, thus a beginning, instead of just life's end. Considering how the Egyptians worked with pictology, perception is entirely the key and this is a show that constantly plays with perceptions. Considering also the large part faith plays on the show, that new beginning past death might be a very strong theme after all.
Adam and Eve(cutesy codename for skeletons in the cave) are supposed to be Rose and Bernard according to one theory, the DeGroots according to another. It could wind up being Nikki and Paolo. We're just gonna have to wait and see.
The big statue was supposed to be a goddess of fertility(and the name completely escapes me). What I recall is it held an ankh in each hand, if you feel like doing the research.
The producers have already said they're not in purgatory or Hell. 'They're all alive somewhere' is the exact quote.
Daniel's been giving Vincent some exercise to get his mind off Charlotte.(probably not but maybe) __________________Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea Mr Creedy and ideas are bulletproof.
