Since the 1950's TV show Superman's thing has been to fight for truth, justice, and the American way.

Some of the PC crowd seem to think that's a bit silly and old fashioned so much they that did away with it on Superman Returns, but still it keeps coming back. Perhaps the main reason is because the PC crowd doesn't really get what the American way really is. They tend to think of it as a slogan describing American greed and maybe baseball games and hot dogs or something. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure what they think really, but I'm pretty sure their idea of the American way isn't anywhere near correct.

Recently I picked up a fairly recent Superman book that I thought got it perfectly. The statement in question actually came from a character from the future trying to help Superman regain his way again in Superman issue 708.

Apparently, Superman had become depressed, disillusioned, and had lost his direction. A future super woman from the Superman Squad explains to Superman how important his ideals are to the future.

So how Does Superman define the American Way? Assuming her definition was based on Superman's own belief system, Superman's belief of the American way is defined as "That all beings are endowed with the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".

This being the case, how in the world could Superman Returns movie have ever been ashamed of the American way slogan? Makes you wonder was it the word, "endowed"? Does it sound too much like we were created with natural God given rights that cannot be taken away by a government for the PC crowd? I mean is it  the whole idea of God granting us our rights and not the government. The idea our founders had was simple, if God created us with our rights then man or government could not take those rights away.

Got to wonder why the hate on the American way. All I'm saying is there certainly is nothing in the world to be ashamed of the American way slogan, and I hope that future portrayals of Superman in  the comics or on screen get it. The American way is not about the politicians in the government today or politics in general. It's bigger than that. It's a way of life.

So I hope Superman continues to stand for truth, justice, and the American way for as long as people write Superman stories, and forget all that "other stuff" jazz from Superman Returns.
