"Amazing Spider-Man" Pulls in $7.5 Million at Midnight
7-03-12
by Steve Sunu
"The Amazing Spider-Man" may be rebooting Sony's Spider-Man franchise only ten years after the original's debut, but it doesn't look like it's in any danger of underperforming. According to Deadline, the Marc Webb-helmed film took in $7.5 million for its U.S. midnight debut, matching the midnight box office take of "Iron Man 2," "Pirates of the Caribbean 2" and "Spider-Man 3."
However, "The Amazing Spider-Man" still has a long way to go if it wants to catch up to "Spider-Man 3's" lifetime gross. In its first weekend, "Spider-Man 3" grossed $151 million domestic (it currently sits at the #5 biggest opening weekend of all time) and eventually rose to $336 million over its lifetime. The web-slinger's latest big-screen outing has even further to go if it wants to compete with the record-breaking "The Avengers," which grossed a record $207 million during its domestic opening weekend and currently sits at $606 million domestic.
Directed by Marc Webb, the film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Campbell Scott, C. Thomas Howell, Embeth Davidtz and Annie Parisse. The Amazing Spider-Man opens July 3.
