Read this interview from Allison Mack, aka Chloe Sullivan.

SMALLVILLE'S ALLISON MACK -- PART 1

BURNABY, British Columbia -- It might be the most excruciating moment of Chloe Sullivan's young life. Clark Kent, amped up on Red Kryptonite, crashes a party hosted by Lex Luthor and begins to belittle Chloe's never-realized feelings for him in front of everyone.

Clark's comments are piercing, and Chloe can do nothing but stare straight-forward. Even if she understands Clark isn't himself, Chloe's face reflects humiliation.

But the feeling is short-lived. As this take of a scene from "Crimson," an upcoming episode of The CW series, is cut, Allison Mack, who plays Chloe, quickly does a 180 emotionally and joins her castmates for some laughs.

Temporarily not needed on the Luthor party set, Mack then joins The Continuum for a short walk to the interior set of the Kent house, where she can talk out of range of the production.

Following is part one of a two-part interview with Mack, which will conclude on Tuesday. It is also the first of several stories from The Continuum's visit to the Smallville set last month.

The Continuum: Before we get into Smallville, you did a voice for The Batman...

Mack: Yeah! I did, with Andrea Romano, the director, who is a friend of mine. Isn't she fabulous?

The Continuum: There's a reason those shows get all that talent. How was that, working on The Batman?

Mack: It was really fun. I did a voice for Ant Bully, a cartoon feature, and then I've done a lot of commercials and stuff like that, but I've never done any episodic television for cartoons. And it's really different. It's almost like a play. Everybody sits in a circle around a microphone and acts it out.

The Continuum: Were you in the same room with Brandon Routh (who did the voice of Everywhere Man)?

Mack: No, but Brandon and I know each other from a few years ago. We met through a mutual friend at a party. So he was on his way out of the studio and I was on my way in doing Batman and he was like, "Allison!" And I was like, "Oh my God, what are you doing here?"

Way too many comic-book characters. Way too many coincidences. (laughs)

The Continuum: Are you interested in doing more voices?

Mack: I'd love to. Like I said, Andrea is a friend of mine, so whenever we can work together, we'd love to. But it's hard because we're here. I'd love to, though.

The Continuum: Moving to Smallville, this season's been different for you, hasn't it?

Mack: This season's been crazy for me. I'm usually in the "B" or "C" storyline, I'm not usually involved in the "A" storyline, so this season almost every episode I'm a huge part of the "A" storyline and I have my own separate "B" storyline.

I mean, it's just been outrageous. They gave me Jimmy Olsen, and Aaron Ashmore as my boyfriend has been so fabulous and I'm grateful to the writers for doing that, and to the producers for casting Aaron, because he's fantastic. It's really just allowed my character to be flushed out in so many different angles. And it's so nice to have a storyline that's wrapped up in just me and has nothing to do with Clark.

The Continuum: The pining is over...

Mack: The pining is over! He can pine for me for a little while now. (laughs)

The Continuum: This is kind of unique today. There's a lot of the core cast in one room.

Mack: I know. It's so rare that we all get to work together and we love each so much, so it's so much fun.

The Continuum: You can tell by watching.

Mack: We're kind of crazy about each other. It's kind of nice to have everybody in the same room. I think it kind of drives the director crazy because we have a little too much fun and we don't always get the work done as fast as we should.

I think the love we have for each other really translates on camera, and I think that's part of the reason why the show is such a success. I think it's really obvious there's a lot beautiful energy on the show.

The Continuum: As an actor, what's it like doing the same character for...

Mack: Six years? There are pros and cons, as there are with everything.

A pro is that I just know her so well. I've really been able to see and watch her grow, and grow alongside of her. And see how my growth personally has been reflected in her growth as a character. So all of those things are really exciting and interesting.

And it's fun to have such control of the character because the writers and myself, we have such a fabulous symbiotic relationship in that it's very much give and take. So, I come up with ideas, and to see them flush it out, it's really fun. And I think that that trust has been built over time. So the fact that I've been working on it for six years with the same people has really allowed us to have a nice, cohesive relationship.

The cons, obviously... as an actor, we're nomadic creatures by nature. So the fact we've been sort of stuck in one spot for a very long time, emotionally and physically, makes it a little bit difficult to keep everything as exciting as you can. But, I mean, therein lies the challenge, so all-around it's been great.

The Continuum: It seems every year the show doesn't get stagnant, though.

Mack: A new progression, absolutely. And I didn't mean stagnant in that I'm doing the same thing all the time. I meant stagnant in that I'm always playing Chloe Sullivan, the reporter. I'm used to playing Chloe Sullivan the reporter, but then in three hours for my next audition, I could be playing Al, the next-door neighbor who's the daughter of someone in the Mafia. Or in the next three hours, I could be playing Laura, the floozy up the street.

I'm so used to such a wide range of characters, whereas for the last six years, I've really just played one. There's been a huge evolution in her, so it's been different sides of her, but she's essentially the same core person. In that, that's what I meant by stagnant.

The Continuum: Is it difficult with the Chloe-speak, and the machine-gun way she sometimes talks?

Mack: Yes. Yes! I think that's been my biggest challenge on the show.

Emotionally, she's been fabulous. She's allowed to be so flawed and to fall down and make mistakes, and to stand up and brush herself off again. So I think I haven't really found a challenge in keeping her alive emotionally.

But I've had a really hard time in making the exposition lifelike. Because a lot of my job on the show is really moving the storyline along and being the brains behind it and allowing the audience in on exactly what is going on technically. That's really an important part of the show. So I know how important those Daily Planet scenes, those debriefing scenes, are.

But I still want to make them exciting and interesting and lifelike and fun to watch. That can be very difficult at times.

And also, the tongue-twisters. It's like, "Blehhhh!" My jaw gets tired. But it's great because at the end of the day after a huge, complex scene like that, I think to myself, "My, God! I could play a doctor. I could play a lawyer. I could play a physicist." And have no problems spitting all that jargon out after this, you know?

It's gotten really easy for me to remember complex things.

The Continuum: I'm sure you've been interviewed dozens of times, but have you ever been to a newspaper office?

Mack: I haven't, but my father's family are all journalists. His brother's a journalist and his father was a journalist. So, it's sort of in my blood. But I definitely will have to admit, I have a very romanticized version of what a newspaper office is in my head.

The Continuum: I don't think Clark would get in as easily to my old office in Detroit as he does The Daily Planet.

Mack: He's in there a lot. I pretty much live in there. I don't think I go home very much any more. (laughs) And I sort of screwed school, it seems like.

COMING TUESDAY: In part two of the interview with Allison Mack, she talks about Jimmy Olsen, the Smallville fan base and what's ahead for Chloe.

I come with more news!!

The Martian Manhunter Is Cast!
The January 8 issue of TV Guide (now hitting newsstands) reveals that actor Phil Morris has landed the role of the Martian Manhunter for the Jan. 25 episode of Smallville, which is titled "Labyrinth."

To most, Morris is best known for his role as Jackie Chiles on Seinfeld. However, that is only one of his many credits. Other movies or television series on his resume include Melrose Place, Love Boat: The Next Wave, and the 1980s revival of Mission: Impossible, where he played the son of Barney Collier, a character played by Morris' real-life did Greg Morris in the original series.

And he has some comic book connections. Morris played a Justice League villain, Vandal Savage, on Justice League. On a sitcom titled WIOU, Morris played a character named Eddie Brock, but no, it wasn't Venom's alter ego. The super-hero thing also runs in his family... his sister, Iona, was the voice of Storm in the 1990's X-Men animated series. (If only they had her dub over Halle Berry's atrocious dialogue in the movies...)

Also, part 2 of the interview with Allison Mack.

SMALLVILLE'S ALLISON MACK -- PART 2

BURNABY, British Columbia -- The Continuum today wraps up its interview with Allison Mack, who plays Chloe Sullivan on The CW's Smallville.

(For part one of the interview, CLICK HERE.)

The Continuum: There seems to have been an instant chemistry with Aaron Ashmore and Jimmy.

Mack: Yeah, I kind of adored him right away. I was really lucky, because my personal boyfriend is very similar to the character Jimmy Olsen is. The writers know my boyfriend and know that, so there were a lot of similarities that were written in to the character that kind of parallel my life.

I always say, "My God, you remind me so much of my boyfriend" when I'm talking with Aaron. So there was an instant comfort/attraction kind of thing there. And then also Aaron's a very good-looking guy and he's so charming, it was kind of hard not to be captivated by him, in a way.

The Continuum: And Jimmy's not just a doofus, either.

Mack: That's the other thing, too. The character is interesting, so he's able to tickle Chloe's fancy not only physically, but intellectually, and I think that was one of the most important parts about bringing in a love interest for Chloe.

But I think it's so much fun that my character is the only character that's a figment of Al and Miles' (Gough and Millar) imagination. And that was brought to this show specifically for this show and has not been part of the Superman comics, whatsoever. So they're really been able to manipulate me and manipulate their storyline so that it coincides with the Superman legend. And I've been used as a bridge in order to gap a lot of those spaces in a way.

So it's been so much fun to be part of the legend, but still be so fresh and new -- in just bringing Lois in, and introducing journalism to Clark, and giving Brainiac his name, and calling Clark Superman, and saying "faster than a speeding bullet" and now, being the reason that Jimmy Olsen is a part of our story. It makes me feel very important.

The Continuum: There's been a lot of talk about Chloe becoming a character in the comic books.

Mack: I do believe DC purchased my image already. I don't know if that's actually true, but I believe Chloe is owned by DC now.

The idea that if anybody plays this character in the future in some other projects, they'll have to look like me or have a likeness of me is really cool. Really cool.

The Continuum: I've heard from several people now about how much Tom Welling has grown over the show's course.

Mack: Absolutely. Tom is an amazing man in that he's like a sponge. And he loves to learn. And he loves filmmaking, all aspects of it. So from the first day that he walked on set, he was so humble about everything and so excited to try things on and take people's advice. There was no pride. There was no ego. Beautiful.

And because of that he's learned at a rapid pace. It's really incredible. This year, directing, he was fabulous.

The Continuum: He directed this year, too?

Mack: He did. He's a fantastic director -- as he is an actor. Seeing him evolve has been amazing.

The Continuum: Do you have a favorite episode?

Mack: This season?

The Continuum: Or overall.

Mack: I like this episode we just shot called "Labyrinth." I really liked the script for that, where Clark is caught up in sort of a dream world where he has no powers and everybody says he is crazy -- except for Chloe. I thought that was really interesting and exciting and cool.

One of my most favorite ones to shoot, just because it was really fun, was "Spell," where the three of us were witches. Just because I love Erica (Durance, who plays Lois) and Kristin (Kreuk, who plays Lana) so much and it was so much fun to work with them and be this really goofy, ridiculous character.

The Continuum: Are you surprised at the fan base for this show?

Mack: They're so amazing, loyal and fantastic.

The Continuum: You've been to conventions.

Mack: I've been to a few, and it's really overwhelming. It's exhausting but it's always so uplifting because you really get to see the support people have for you, which is really nice.

The Continuum: And all the web sites...

Mack: I know, it's unbelievable. I try to stay off the Internet just because I'm too insecure. I read all the good things and then remember the one bad. Just for my own sanity, I usually try to stay away from them.

I have had a couple of interviews with some women that have done web sites for me that are just fantastic young women. They're just wonderful young women that really appreciate Chloe's intellect and ambition. That's sort of more what I'd like to see out in the world as role models for young women, so I'm really glad that these women are taking the initiative and putting things out there for me because I'm not good at doing my own publicity.

The Continuum: I know they don't tell you what's coming up for your character...

Mack: No, they don't. I have a big mouth, that's why. (laughs) I'd probably tell the secrets.

The Continuum: Right. But what direction do you feel Chloe should be headed?

Mack: Which direction? Right now, I've just been so focused on balancing all of the secrets and lies that I've had between Lana and Clark.

She's losing Jimmy. I think she's very aware of the fact that she's losing Jimmy because of Clark. So I think she's getting to a very integral part of her life where she's going to need to choose which direction she's going to go.

Will she continue to dedicate her life to Clark and his secret? Or will she say, "I can't do this anymore. I won't ever tell your secret, but I cannot be involved in your life anymore." And kind of shut Clark out so she continue to live her life the way she wants to live it.

The Continuum: Like Pete Ross did.

Mack: Yeah, totally. So I think she's definitely in a place in her life, or will be very soon, especially if she loses Jimmy, where she's going to really have to start looking at how this is effecting her and if it's benefiting her and her life and what she wants to do.

The Continuum: Did you see the Superman Returns movie?

Mack: I didn't, I didn't, I didn't. I know. I know. I need to go see it. It was at the IMAX by my house and I totally didn't see it. But I will. I'll rent it.

The Continuum: I was just curious, because Smallville can't go on forever. Do you see a future for your character or would you like to go on to other things?

Mack: It would be hard for me to say, either way. As of right now, six years into it, I would be very interested in trying something else. But that's not to say I'm willing to close doors on other things.

So, I'm not really sure. I know that there have been ideas thrown around and I've been involved in some of them and not involved in others. I'm trying to focus on what we're doing right now as opposed to projecting into the future the choices I would make.

OH...MY...GOD!!!  CHECK...THIS...OUT!!!

Question: Happy holiday hangover! Care to start off my new year with some new spoilers from Smallville?— Frances

Ausiello: Forget "Justice League." Heck, forget "Crimson." The Smallville episode everyone will be talking about is "Labyrinth" (aka Season 6, Episode 12). Sandwiched between "J.L." and "Crimson," the hourlong twistapalooza will answer the question, "What if Clark's super-abilities were nothing more than a figment of his imagination?" The mind-bending episode will also feature the death of a Smallville heroine (hint: I get more questions about this individual than anyone else on the show), and the long-awaited arrival/return of a DC Comics icon. Hey, you know what I've got a hankering for? An Oreo cookie!

Question: Do you have any info on the status of Lex and Lana's relationship? Are they gonna get married or not?— Gillian

Ausiello: There will be a wedding ceremony later this season, but that doesn't necessarily mean anyone's getting married.

that would be sad though...WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE ON SMALLVILLE!!!??

From what's been said about Crimson, I doubt Chloe's going anywhere.  Of course, if what happens in the episode is this false reality Clark is in, then what happens would not apply to the real reality!!  Besides, if you'll recall the writer's left you to believe that Chloe and her Dad were "dead" in the Season 3 finale and the Season 4 premiere.  So, just don't believe the rumors of someone's death until you've seen the body!!    (Of course even then DNA would need to be checked to know for sure!)
