You never know Clark and Chloe could still get together since Smallville never follows the comic book world perfectly. After all next episode Chloe and Jimmy are breaking up.

Very true Tim!!!    Also, consider this Kavitha, if you go back and listen to commentary on the DVDs through the various season, the writers repeatedly refer to how much chemistry there is b/w Chloe and Clark.  They go on to say "you just want those two to get together".  Also, remember that writers love to draw out situations where an audience is waiting for two characters to get together.  This has been done, not just in Smallville, but in a variety of programs.  Now, in a society where we want everything 10 minutes ago, it is naturally flustrating to get tired of waiting to see two characters that mesh as well as Clark and Chloe to get together.  Still, try to remember that this is a writer's tool and it is used repeatedly to get the viewer's attention.

Bottom line here Kavitha, just have patience!!  I know it's hard!!!    But try and do not give up on these two!!

Also, I have to make a follow up remark to Mattro's earlier remark:

Like all great shows though, all good things must come to an end.

Don't tell the folks over at "Law and Order" that!!  The original "Law and Order" series is now in its 17th season!!!  This just re-enforces my earlier point,

Quote:
Bottom line, if ratings are good + advertisors/sponsors happy = network happy

Quote:
Lex's brother I bet, he's still alive isn't he? The one they showed about 3 or 4 seasons ago that Lex had to save or did he save Lex, I can't remember.

Yes Tim, you are thinking about Lucas Luthor, you never know when he may show up!!    Also, don't forget about Helen (the lady Lex married at the end of season 2).  They never let us know what really happened to her, and you know what they say about a woman scorned!!!

It would be impossible for Smallville to have the same longevity as Law & Order. Consider the source material. Smallville has something of a niche audience while L&O is more mainstream and even though Superman is nearly 70 years old, laws and judicial systems have existed for about as long as mankind has existed. The comics come out once a month while the news is perpetually on.  It's inevitable; if it goes too long, the characters and storyline will become incredibly stale and unwatchable. There's only so many more times people can find out Clark's secret and forget it in the same episode. There's only so many more threats to be faced from the dead planet of Krypton. Be thankful for what we've had so far and be ready to let it go when the time arrives as it is looming just there in the distance.

Pakratmak, you make valid points and I applaude you for taking the time to articulate them so well.  Now, using your arguement about source material and looking at Law & Order.  At its core, the material has been the same for the last 17 seasons - that is there is a crime of some sort (a murder, a robbery, etc.) the police have to gather the clues to catch the alleged guilty party, and then the district attorney tries the case to be either won or lost.  Certainly they are able to tweak the details, but the basis is always the same.  So, if we consider the source material - then would not even the Superman comics have been stopped being produced at some point??  I mean how many ways is there to tell of a baby having to be evacuated by a doomed world, arriving on earth, and growing up to have extra-ordinary abilities??

Now, I mean no offense here, and I am merely posing a question/thought to your point.  Again, I realize no series can go on forever, it just gets tiring of hearing people talk about when/how soon a program will end (especially when it is doing well).  Anyhow, just my two cents worth.

Exclusive: SMALLVILLE CO-CREATOR TALKS ABOUT THE REST OF SEASON SIX AND SUPERMAN RETURNS - PART 1
From the Phantom Zone to Green Arrow, Gough gives iF the skinny

While many genre shows have come and gone over the past six years, SMALLVILLE has proven to be the little show that could. Now in its sixth season, the series is as creatively strong as it has ever been. With original creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar still at the helm, the show has truly soared the last two years now that Clark Kent has left high school and more of Superman’s comic book legacy has been woven into the show’s mythology.

Last season saw the Phantom Zone make an appearance as part of the season ender, which has resulted in a stunning new season with the release of Zod and other prisoners from the Phantom Zone bringing the series and the movies even more full circle.

At the Winter TCA’s, Gough sat down with iF Magazine for an exclusive one-on-one two-part interview, to discuss the series' continued creative strength, SUPERMAN RETURNS and other projects he and Millar have on the horizon.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

iF MAGAZINE: Will SMALLVILLE be back for another season?

ALFRED GOUGH: Fingers crossed, we have a good feeling about it, but all the back room rumblings are very positive. Our plan is to be back.

iF: The last two seasons have felt more align with the original movies the more and more we get closer to Clark Kent’s true origin. Was that always the plan?

GOUGH: It’s rare I think for a show to have its second wind in the fifth season. The first four seasons were foundation building and we purposely didn’t play with a lot of the toys in the D.C. Comics toy box. We obviously had Perry White in an episode and Flash in an episode. We knew what the end of Season 4 was going to be, the crystal on the tundra, throwing it, so we had the Fortress of Solitude. Obviously we had Lois Lane. I think we felt we had to earn the right to bring these characters in. So what’s nice about it, unlike certain shows that flame out in two seasons, I think we’ve had more of a slow build with Clark out of high school. Now we have the benefit of sticking around by using these D.C. characters.

iF: It’s pretty rare to have a feature film [SUPERMAN RETURNS], while you’re still on TV. When you first started the show, you told me D.C. was nervous about you and Miles dipping into the comic book well too much because of the revisionist SUPERMAN movie in development. Did they get concerned when SUPERMAN RETURNS was finally greenlit since it is more in line with the original films, much like SMALLVILLE is?

GOUGH: The great thing ultimately, was our biggest savior was Bryan Singer. Bryan was a fan of the show. We had a gentleman’s agreement. Miles, myself, Bryan, [SUPERMAN RETURNS scribes] Dan [Harris] and Mike [Dougherty] the writers, we would keep each other in the loop. Bryan invited us down to Australia. We sort of pitched out Season Five. Bryan offered to let us read the script and we said “well, quite frankly we don’t want that responsibility. But you tell us if any of this is conflicting or things that are not going to jive and things you want us to stay away from.” For a television show, you have that flexibility. And it was a great working relationship. Before that, when it was the McG version of the movie and it was another origin story and Krypton didn’t blow up, and Lex Luthor was a Kryptonian -- there was a year there where it was very tough, in that weird kind of way. We were in the weird position of arguing 60 years of comics history to them, where they were willing to have a planet where Superman is on Earth but Krypton still existed. It was bizarre. Thankfully Bryan came in and said, I don’t want to do SMALLVILLE, I want to do a SUPERMAN movie, and he did SUPERMAN RETURNS.

iF: What did you think of the movie?

GOUGH: I enjoyed the movie a lot. I think that airplane sequence is great. I thought Brandon did a very good job. I like Kevin Spacey. Doing the show every week is a little weird and it’s a little weird to watch the movie, because to me Lex was a bit of a hybrid of [Michael] Rosenbaum and Gene Hackman. Some times he was really vicious and other times he was sort of goofy. All and all I enjoyed the movie, I think Bryan clearly has great affection for the character and I’m looking forward to the sequel, because in a weird way, he did another origin story. Now that’s all sort of been set up, I’m curious to see them bring in a villain that’s not Lex Luthor and curious to see where they take that “Superman has a son thing,” which was a huge thing and very daring. There are a lot of places to go with that story and I’m curious to see what they do.

iF: Did anything from the new SUPERMAN movie inform SMALLVILLE?

GOUGH: No. We’ve been saying that our character is pre-SUPERMAN 1 and that movie is post SUPERMAN II. So in a way it’s too far down the road. I think it was a really satisfying movie experience. It’s interesting to see how different they did things too. Our X-Ray vision looks more like X-Ray’s and his looks more like an MRI. I thought the flying is spectacular, but we can’t afford to do it. We did it once, which I thought looked great.

iF: What should we expect from the rest of the season?

GOUGH: What you’re going to see is a convergence of the JUSTICE LEAGUE, the 33.1 story and the Phantom Zone. All those sort of storylines will start to come together toward the end of the season.

iF: Any possibilities of spinning off any other characters from SMALLVILLE.

GOUGH: They seem to be content with SMALLVILLE, but if you’re going to do any spin-off, you would do Green Arrow. Justin is such a TV star.

iF: You always come up with these great season enders? Do you always know where you're going?

GOUGH: We always know where we’re heading, always, not necessary the season finale. We knew at the end of 4 he goes back and we knew at the end of 5, Zod gets out of the Phantom Zone, and we know what the end of Seasont 6 is, in a very rough form until we get to the end of the episode. There’s so many moving parts, there are certain changes as you go along. The rebound is, you don’t want to get too locked into things that you can’t change if they’re not working. There’s always a sort of fluidness to TV shows. We also tend to have the first half the season more fully formed in our heads than the second half, because you don’t know how the first half is going to play and you don’t know what surprises come to you. Certainly one of the great surprises of the season, was how well the Oliver Queen/Green Arrow character worked. You hope it works, you hope they have chemistry and blend seamlessly in the cast and Justin [Hartley] hit it out of the park. It’s good when you leave the audience wanting more.

iF: Will he be back?

GOUGH: He definitely will be back by Season’s end. Martian Manhunter will be back.

iF: And SMALLVILLE should be back for a Seventh Season as well.

GOUGH: We better be, otherwise it’s going to be one hell of a cliffhanger, that you never see paid off.

STAY TUNED FOR PART 2 NEXT WEEK

Mystery solved.

Episode #6-16: "Promise" Tentative Air Date: March 15, 2007

Written By: Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson
Directed By: Rick Rosenthal
Guest Stars: Sarah-Jane Redmond (Nell Potter)

UPDATED 2/6/07: So much for surprises. The official website of actress Sarah-Jane Redmond confirms that we should "watch out for her long awaited return as Nell Lang this season on Smallville!" Thanks to Heddy for the tip. (Contrary to what Ms. Redmond's website says, the character's name is actually Nell Potter. Though that, too, may have change when she married "Dean.")

Also, this.

Episode #6-17: "Combat" Tentative Air Date: March 22, 2007

UPDATED 2/5/07: The scene where Lana has pain associated with the baby has been moved from the Luthorcorp jet to the Luthor Mansion, we assume for budgetary purposes. Instead of going to a hospital in China she and Lex end up at the Smallville Medical Center. Writer/producer Steve DeKnight has confirmed the change of location in his Myspace blog.

Slack, you are cut, Mattro, hope you feel better.

Just in case nobody posted this I found it on the comicscontinuum.com

Annette O'Toole, who plays Martha Kent on The CW's Smallville, told The Continuum that she doesn't really see her character filling the void of advice-giver after Jonathan's death.

"Clark's really his own man now," O'Toole told The Continuum. "She's really more of a friend than someone who tells him what to do."

O'Toole said she misses John Schneider, who played Jonathan. "Especially on the plane trips," she said.

She also noted that she's wary about Martha's relationship with Lionel. "You never know what's going on with him," she said.

In other Smallville news:

* The upcoming episode "Combat" will feature several Phantom Zone villains, all of whom are original creations for the show.

* The Feb. 22 episode will be a repeat of "Justice," which was the show's highest-rated episode this season.

So, if we consider the source material - then would not even the Superman comics have been stopped being produced at some point??

Great question. Look up any interview with anyone who's ever had to write issues for the character. The one issue that always posed a roadblock situation for any of them was almost always 'What do we throw at this guy?'. I'll leave it to you to find some of those interviews(Batman needs a break from the detective work ). That documentary 'Look! Up in the sky!' is also a great source for the answer to that question in particular.

Now, back to Smallville. The show is only about Clark's coming of age in that small town, not Superman's whole story. While Law & Order may have the same exact basic set of plotlines every week; the crimes, the criminals, and the techniques change every week. The longer Smallvile does go on, the more limited it becomes in how it keeps us engaged and entertained. (sorry for repetition)There's only so many more meteor freaks writers can create in this particular realm of Clark's story, only so many more times someone can learn Clark's secret and conveniently forget it by the end of the episode, only so much longer that Lex can be held back on a leash before relizing his true evil potential, only so long that Clark is going to be tied to this small town instead of trying to save the whole world.

I'm not wishing for the end and I will miss it when it's gone, but there will be a time when it just runs out of steam. I see a lot of lame knockoff villains, desperate guest appearances by other comic characters, and unwatchable filler episodes just waiting to happen. I'd much rather see it end on a high note, where we're actually left wanting a little bit more, than how some shows end(badly and with short notice- see Birds of Prey for an example).

So, I'll leave it with a simple question: What's left for us to actually look forward to?

I'll answer this with question with a question (as all great politicians do!).  Why bother making a series in the first place????

Found this.

WWE stars Kane and Ashley Massaro are shooting an episode of Smallville for the CW Network this week in Canada. No word yet on the characters or when the episode will air. WWE World champion Batista appeared as a Phantom Zone villain (stopped by the debuting Martian Manhunter, and I can't believe I just dropped J'onn J'onzz name on PWInsider.com) earlier this season.

Episode #6-18: "Progeny" Tentative Air Date: April 2007

UPDATED 2/8/07 (Thanks S.A.M.!): The guest character this week is Moira Sullivan, better known as the mother of Chloe. It turns out that she pretended to be ill to separate herself from Chloe. Why? It turns out that she was iiradiated during the meteor shower and has super brain powers of her own. Lex takes her away from the asylum with hopes of using Moira's powers for his own gain. He forces her to use her powers against two of his captive super-freaks, Alexi and Davidson, who have the powers to create orbs of energy and walk through walls, respectively.
- Moira despises Lex and mind-controls Alexi and Davidson to use them to kill Lex.
- Our own commentary here: Wouldn't Chloe have uncovered this information about her mother? And why was her mother in Smallville in 1989? We'll have to see...
- Don't be surprised if there's some stunt casting involved in the role of Chloe's mother.
- Davidson hurts Lana, who is taken to the Smallville Medical Center and tells Clark not to worry, that she has miscarried the baby anyway. Lana also decides to get some tests done for herself to find out what happened with her pregnancy.
- Erica Durance and John Glover do not appear in this episode.

UPDATED 2/5/07: Title Posted. Please do not post this title on other websites without a link back to KryptonSite.com.

Episode #6-20: Title Unknown Tentative Air Date: April or May 2007

Exclusive Interview: SMALLVILLE CO-CREATOR ALFRED GOUGH TALKS SEASON SIX AND MERCY REEF - PART 2
What would have happened with MERCY REEF if it went to series and is a JUSTICE LEAGUE spin-off in the cards?

As the fan base continues to grow for SMALLVILLE in its sixth year, it’s a testament to creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar’s ability to take everyone’s familiar Superman mythos and weave it organically into a brand new package.

While the series began by focusing on Clark Kent’s high school years, the past two seasons have shown him growing up and slowly finding his footing as himself and as the superhero that is yet to come.

At the Winter TCA’s, Gough sat down with iF Magazine for an exclusive one-on-one, to tease about what’s coming in the second half of Season Six, dispel rumors of a JUSTICE LEAGUE spin-off and what happened with the MERCY REEF pilot focusing on Aquaman. This is part 2 of a 3-part interview.

iF MAGAZINE: There are rumors of a JUSTICE LEAGUE/METROPOLIS series. Is this still a possibility?

AL GOUGH: There are no spin-off plans at the moment of any kind. The “Justice” episode was incredibly well received by fans and critics alike, but alas, right now, the network doesn't seem to have an appetite for a new superhero series.

iF: Martha Kent's election to the Senate seems to have put her on the backburner a bit more than in previous seasons. Will we be seeing a bit more of her later in the season, given her growing romantic attachment to Lionel?

GOUGH: The Martha/Lionel relationship will come to a head by the end of the season, and you will understand a lot more of Lionel's true motivations this season. I believe people will be surprised.

iF: Jimmy's breakup with Chloe signals a return of the crush Chloe's had on Clark all these years. Given that we know he ends up with Lois, will the two of them ever be together, even briefly?

GOUGH: Don't give up hope on Jimmy and Chloe.

iF: We've seen Lana slowly turning to "the Dark Side" this season, both with her engagement to Lex and her realization in "Subterranean" that "money is power". The revelation that she's pregnant has been a shock, as well. Is there anything you can tell us about the direction Lana's headed in?

GOUGH: Lana's had an interesting season and has really evolved as a character this year. Keep watching, I think there are some interesting twists in store in her relationship with both Lex and Clark. I don't think she has "gone to the dark side," but she has grown up this season and I think deals with the situation in a more mature manner. Lex always feared he would corrupt her, but give Lana some credit; she's stronger than you think.

iF: The WB had greenlit MERCY REEF [the series based on AQUAMAN]before the network became The CW, right?

GOUGH: If the WB were still on the air, we would be on the air. That was bizarre. The [SUPERMAN RETURNS] movie being one of those once in a lifetime things where you have a movie and television show simultaneously. Your network being cancelled being another one after your pilot has already been greenlit. That one was about the network getting cancelled and the new network had a different agenda. Suddenly you go from the favored son to the bastard stepchild.

iF: How far along in developing MERCY REEF’s first season were you?

GOUGH: They only give you [a] thirteen [episode commitment], so we certainly had the first thirteen arc’ed out and we knew the end of season one.

iF: What would have been the season ender?

GOUGH: It was basically the Ving Rhames character gets recaptured and is taken back to Atlantis.

iF: Were you going to do the same kind of stories in the way you adapted Superman for SMALLVILLE.

GOUGH: Yes, again what we learned from SMALLVILLE was to not get marred with a freak of the week thing. There were a lot of different stories to tell on land and sea. The mythology, Atlantis, would have been a small portion of it. Every fourth episode would have dealt with some of that mythology. I think it could have been very interesting that we’re destroying their society and Atlantis has sort of turned into eco-terrorists – sending back people they’ve sort of reprogrammed as suicide bombers. There was an environmental angle to it that was very interesting and you could talk about politics in the way that the best of sci-fi can talk about it -- the way that BATTLESTAR GALACTICA does. It was definitely a cool show, we had a lot of good ideas for, the cast was certainly great. It was probably a bigger, epic show than SMALLVILLE.

iF: How deep did you go into the comics?

GOUGH: There was this whole ATLANTIS CHRONICLES that sort of pre-dated Orin. It was the history of Atlantis and it was fascinating. Unlike Superman, there really isn’t a set core mythology for Arthur Currie. There are a couple different versions of it. We went with the most classic one, but instead of making the dad a Lighthouse keeper, we made him a Coast Guard and for story reasons, it’s another reason to bring stories to the show.

STAY TUNED FOR PART 3

Rumor confirmed.

New Guest Stars for Smallville

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember how last November WWE's Batista guest starred in the episode "Static"?? Well now WWE superstars Kane and Ashley Massaro are doing it too. According to different WWE sources, they finished filming this week in Canada. Their roles are apparently in the upcoming episode 6.17 "Combat" in which they will be playing prisoners from the Phantom Zone.

HOLY CRAP IN CRAP!!  Check this out!!

Will Pete Ross Come Back? Plus: Bizarro, The Costume, Supergirl & More!
Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar appeared at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Sci-Fi Convention, and Tabby from Allison Mack Online has given us a little tidbit: the producers would like to bring Pete Ross (played by Sam Jones III) back to the show at some point.

UPDATE: Thanks to Sifaria, some more details:

- We may get Bizarro Clark or at least another adventure with a split Clark by the end of the season. (Another April Fool comes true!)

- We may see Supergirl. The producers are interested in "playing with as many toys in the DC toybox" as they can as long as a story fits them. Sadly, we won't be seeing Batman or Wonder Woman as long as DC restrictions hold.

- We will definitely NOT be seeing "Tommy Tights" (aka Welling in the costume) on Smallville. Bummer.

- We can expect to see the "Lionel reads Kryptonian" bits play out by the Season 6 finale.

That's a relief!!  The costume somehow seems to takeaway someting from the validity of the story.
