There's more!!

*AM reveals it may be episode 13 or 15 which she'll be directing.

*Chloe will be back at the DP to visit, however her direction is changing. Her main focus will become Isis and running it. She will find that her passion is for helping the meteor affected of society, and will devote herself to that and become a mentor of sorts. She mentions taking in the Plastique character and other people will need her help. Chloe will be primarily busy with Jimmy, Davis and Isis.

*Chloe will attempt to "cut the apron strings with Clark". She will take a step back from Clark, and helping him, being his shadow.

*Chloe will be very angry at Lex and any of his co-horts.

JH:
*Clark and Oliver will be buddies. In the premiere, Oliver does purposely go looking for Clark.

*JH mentions more of OQ questioning his GA motivations and if he wants to keep doing what he's been doing, looking at what he's been sacrificing and questioning if it's worth it. He mentions Clark will be embracing the hero thing instead, and they "switch" places, and will butt heads over it.

CF & SW:
*In regards to Clark, CF says Tess wants to know "Who he is and what goes on with him." Tess will know Clark was close to Lex, and she desperately wants to find Lex, and tries to get Clark to help her find Lex.

*SW was asked about his appearance later in the season, if they might add prosphetics, and he makes it sound like it's possible DB's physical appearance could be changed. He just reiterates that the character will come to resemble the Doomsday from the comics more.

*DB meets all the characters at once, and he and Clark will have a "unique, buddy-buddy friendship", but sounds vague and like there will be a lot of twists with it, basically saying he can't say much.

*The two villians so far aren't planned to work together.

KS & BP:
*Tess will be a formidable opponent for everyone on the cast at some point.

*The new showrunners wanted to reinvigorate the show in all aspects - characters, relationships, dynamics, and bring more of the iconic into it.

*There will be one episode where they will address/touch on the "sexual tension" and love feelings between the Chlark relationship. However:

*The characters will mainly be moving on to the next phase of their lives. There will be a sense of leaving the past behind.

*When asked if this possibly being the last season, was there a drive to really push Clark forward, they mention up till now they haven't done alot with Clark and pursuing a double identity, so Clark will be learning how to balance that. They mention Clark will be the same CK, but closer to Superman.

*The Clois interaction won't be like the dynamic of the L&C show. Though it will be born out of the same iconic background, it will not change, just be more of an evolution of the SV characters.

*They mention there's an option for Lois to do more than 13 episodes. Lois will be more front and center this season.

*When asked if MR was planned to be in finale, they have ideas, but nothing confirmed. Lex will still be written in the background in some aspects this season.

*Clark's secret identity will be the main thrust. Moving around the crowds in Metropolis will prove more difficult for Clark in comparison to what he has been used to be able to do more easily when being heroic in SV. He will also be accountable to Lois.

TS & DS:
*They mention they wanted to mix things up more this year after the last few seasons. They want to honor the fans and love to hear what we say (though they follow what their own vision is). This year will have their own spin. They mention Clark and Lois together at the DP, and how AG/MM were always wanting to hold off on it, but they now want to "let the fun begin".

*When Lana returns, she will look different that what we've been used to seeing her all this time (but "she'll be even more gorgeous"). She will have left a girl, but will be coming back as a woman who has grown up, with a stronger point of view.

*"Clark, up till now, has basically denied that there's anything going on with a super hero, in SV or Metropolis. The question hasn't really been asked that much. This season there's going to come a point where Clark can't deny that there's someone out there saving people. That's a key change in the mythology of Clark Kent, that he actually is saying, "Yes, there's this other person." We're not going all the way with it. There will be this red and blue blur that will happen, that people are like, "What is that?". It's a big change for him to actually say "yes, that's not me, but there's something out there". That's the beginning of his double identity. The red and blue blur will be his street clothes. Jimmy Olsen does have a camera, and Lois is very curious. If they're working side by side, those worlds are going to collide."

*Martian Manhunter is planned to be in at least 3 more episodes this season. The JL will pick up a bigger role this season.

*"Clark has always been reactive in the show, he's always been "Oh, something's happening". Clark's decision to go to the DP is his way of saying "I can't 'stick it out' (?) at the farm anymore, I've got to use my powers to help people." He's going out there. He's looking for them."

*Regarding the possibility of this being the last season, and what they can do for the future of the show/spinoffs, they said this of Tom: "At this point, we really want Tom to come back. At this point, all of our efforts, you know, it's early in the season, so we're hoping. Contracts come up all the time for renewal. We're hoping that he will stay on. It's difficult to call the show "Smallville" without Tom, you know. You can call the show something else. I think a spin off could be an awesome idea. We have many ideas and have talked about that. But Smallville, it's like if you take his (Tom's) face of the poster, it feels a little unfair I think".

*Tess's character is a neither Mrs. Tessmacher or Mercy, but a nod to and a bit of both. Her storyline is made up. Her license plate will say "Merce".

Wow that's a lot of stuff they are going to cram in to next season. Course when you break it down, Smallville is like a 22 or 23 hour yearly movie.

KryptonSite Comic-Con Report: Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer Talk Season 8!
After the Smallville panel at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, the participating actors and producers spoke with members of the press about the upcoming season, and we are now happy to share with you an interview with two of the show's new executive producers, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, from their roundtable discussion.

Thanks go out to "Routh" for the transcription assist.

To begin the interview, Slavkin and Swimmer talked about their time on Smallville prior to their recent promotion and their intention to stay true to the show's vision. "We've been involved with the show since season two," Slavkin says, "so much of the plot elements and the key plot elements, we've had something to do with."

"The Smallville fan means a lot to us," Slavkin continues, "so it would be irresponsible for us to say, 'okay, let's do a show where Superman's on heroin'... I say that, obviously, as a metaphor. What we want to do is honor what those guys did, but put or own spin. And I think when you all see the premiere this year, you'll see and you'll feel the four of us. The four of us wrote the script together, which is an unusual thing but we kind of wanted to put our imprint on it. It's our chance to mix things up yet we really want to honor our fans."

"There's a certain amount of 'What would Al and Miles do'?" Darren Swimmer reveals. "Part of it's built in, just from working with them for so many years. We know the different things that make Smallville unique as a TV show, and we adhere to that."

"We want to continue the legacy," Slavkin adds. "We don't want to create our new show. Our egos are less important than the Smallville vision."

Having four people running the Smallville ship is a collaborative effort. "The four of us [Slavkin, Swimmer, Kelly Souders, and Brian Peterson] have been working together since season two, so we're really comfortable with this partnership. It may seem strange to have four people working together, but we've been in the trenches and we've come up through the show together. I think what we're going to do is each one of us is going to be doing a little bit of everything," Swimmer says.

"We talk a gazillion times a day, and because we're both in teams we're both very collaborative from the get-go," Slavkin explains. "When the four of us come together, all of our strengths, all of our own creative quirks come together, and I feel like the sum is more powerful than us as individuals, and you'll see it in different episodes. What's awesome is we're very different, so even though we all create each episode, once that's done, one of us will often run point on that episode. So, the day to day, the producing of that specific show will run under one of us, but that doesn't mean the creation of the show isn't a total collaboration," he says.

One call-back to the show's earlier times comes with the return of Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang for five episodes of the series, most likely airing during November sweeps. "We can't wait. It's going to come at a very bad time for Clark," Slavkin reveals. "She will look different. Visually, it will not be the Lana Lang that we're used to seeing. We're very excited," he says.

"Of course, she'll be just as beautiful as always," Darren Swimmer adds. [Reports say Kristin Kreuk has cut her hair to be very short].

"She's grown up," Todd reveals. "She's left Smallville and she's going to come back a woman. Obviously, she was a woman since she got married, but she's [still] a kid. She was living in the same town her whole life. This is her chance to come back with a stronger point of view than she ever has [had]," he says.

As for Clark, he has "basically denied that there's anything going on with a superhero in Smallville or Metropolis," Swimmer says. "When the question's ever asked, it's always just sort of this mystery. This season's going to be fun for us because it's going to reach a point where he can't deny that there's somebody out there saving people. I think that that's a key change in the mythology of of Clark Kent," he reveals. "It's a big change for him to actually say, 'Yes. It's not me, but there's something out there,' and that's the beginning of his double identity."

Clark will also have extra super-heroing challenges with having Lois and Jimmy at his side most of the time. "All I can say is, Jimmy Olsen does have a camera, and Lois is very curious, you know, and if they're working side by side you can see that those worlds are going to collide," Slavkin teases.

With Clark's journey to Super-manhood, it's not surprising that he will be meeting more characters from the DC Comics universe of characters. Slavkin reveals that the second episode of Season Eight is titled "Plastique," featuring a character from the Captain Atom comic book series. "She is somewhat of a human bomb, and we give a Smallville twist on her. It's not truly her origin story, but when she was young. She comes in as a teen runaway. We've cast a great actress for her, and the fans will love her," he says.

The fourth episode of Season Eight, "Instinct," is confirmed to feature the character Maxima, who is described as an "intergalactic sex goddess." "Smallville always needs an intergalactic sex goddess," Slavkin laughs.

"She can't mate with a human, so where's she going to go? I'll leave that up to your imagination," Swimmer teases.

"There are many, many other possibilities that we're very excited about, but we can't say now. I can say that there will be more [DC characters] for sure," Slavkin says. "The Martian Manhunter is on the show now for at least three episodes this season. The whole Justice League will pick up in the season premiere, and they will play a bigger role this season, and it's going to be really exciting."

" One [criticism of] Clark Kent is that he's always been reactive in our show. His decision to go to the Daily Planet is his way of saying, 'I've got to use my powers to help people.' So when the guy in the audience [of the Comic-Con panel] was talking about testosterone, we're like, you want to see some testosterone? He's going out there. He's looking for it. I think the fans, Superman fans, will be delighted with that," Slavkin says.

"There's an interesting dynamic between the Green Arrow and him because Green Arrow was always the person nudging him and kind giving him a little kick in the butt to go out and be more proactive, and sort of accept his destiny more," Swimmer reveals. "So whle Clark, in season eight, is really accepting his destiny more, the Green Arrow's going to start questioning what his destiny really is and what kind of superhero he really wants to be. There's going the be that interesting dynamic going on there."

During the panel at the Comic-Con International, and in other interviews, the showrunners have been reluctant to label Season 8 as the final year, and one journalist asked if a ninth season would be possible without the participation of Tom Welling, who is signed for only eight years. "At this point we really want Tom to come back," Slavkin says. "At this point, it's early in the season, and contracts come up all the time for renewal. We're hoping that he'll stay on. It's difficult to call the show Smallville without Tom. I mean you could call the show something else and I think a spin-off could be an awesome idea, and we have many ideas and we've talked about that, but to call it Smallville, it feels a little unfair, I think, to the fans," he says.

On the subject of departures, the character of Tess Mercer will be coming onto the series to fill the villainous void left after Michael Rosenbaum's exit from the show. "She's brand new from scratch, but she's a nod to both Tessmacher, hence Tess, and then her last name Mercer, which is a nod to Mercy from the comic books. So she's neither Tessmacher nor Mercy; we're taking a little bit of both, but the storyline and who she is and where she came from and where she's going, that's all completely new," Swimmer teases.

"But her license plate says 'Mercy'," Slavkin adds, letting out a spoiler. "And that's all you need to know. This is a girl you don't miss with."

Slavkin also has great things to say about the actress playing Tess, Cassidy Freeman. "What we love about her is you haven't seen her face everywhere and she's very fresh," he says. "I got goosebumps watching the premiere," he reveals, saying that they saw a quick assemblage of the first episode before heading to San Diego. "We were all relieved and ecstatic and it really came together, and we just cannot stop watching her. She's remarkable. I think the fans are really going to like her," he raves.

"She hit the stage, day one, and nailed it," Swimmer adds. "And we were, I mean as you can imagine, now that Michael Rosenbaum's not on the show, we were wondering if we could get somebody with the layers that [he would bring] and I think that Cassidy really, really does that."

"You can never fill his shoes. You can never be Michael Rosenbaum, and you can never be Lex Luthor. But she makes it her own," Slavkin concludes.

For the fan feedback, Slavkin and Swimmer do say that they read what is being said by the fans. "Positive or negative, we love to hear what the fans think," Swimmer says. "We don't sit there and say 'let's not watch.' We really love to see what the fans are saying, and obviously we can't respond to it; we have to do what our vision is, but by knowing how the fans are reacting, it's really a valuable thing that we have now. It's amazing; our fan base is so passionate."

DAMN!!!  It never ends!!

Give me some awesome Clois scoop. — Danny

Matt: You want awesome? We've got awesome. Our Comic-Con video Q&A with half of Smallville's show-running team, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, is about to go live. When it does, you will hear TVGuide.com's Erin Fox procure this glorious sound bite: "We've played Clark and Lois as brothers and sister, basically, so far... but this season, things change. [Working together at the 'Planet'] they can't deny that there are feelings there."

Can we get more info about Clark and Lois both working at the "Daily Planet"? — Kassandra

Matt: OK, just one more excerpt, but then I'm done robbing Erin Peter to pay Mega Buzz Paul: "The romantic banter, a la Moonlighting... the fans are going to love it," says Swimmer. Banter shmanter — is Clark's pencil going to get sharpened? The answer to that... is coming when the video goes up, folks. In the meantime, enjoy these vids featuring Allison Mack, Justin Hartley and Sam Witwer (aka Doomsday).

I can't wait till the season starts. I bet it's going to be pretty good. If Batman can break records this year, maybe it's Smallville's turn to take over the TV.

KryptonSite Comic-Con Report: Allison Mack Discusses Season 8!
After the Smallville panel at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, the participating actors and producers spoke with members of the press about the upcoming season, and we are now happy to share with you an interview with fan favorite and recent birthday girl Allison Mack (Chloe) from her roundtable discussion.

The first subject to be tackled in Allison's interview is the news that Chloe will not only have her relationships with Jimmy and Clark to think about -- she will also forge an involvement with new character Davis Bloome, played by Sam Witwer.

"I have such a stable to choose from now," Allison grins. "It's really so horrible. Obviously my relationship with Clark is still going strong, and we're always trying to figure out if we're in love, or just friends, or what's going on, and then she's got Jimmy, who's just this beautiful, amazing, supportive, stable, realistic man who I think she really seeks to find solace in, and kind of uses as a way to ground herself in some sort of sense of stability. She goes to him a lot when things feel kind of crazy, but now she's got this new hero, the paramedic Davis guy, who is pursuing her pretty actively, and is incredibly attractive and very kind, and interesting, and also a little dark. So she's really got three to choose from, and then there's the Green Arrow, and he's just like whatever. He's just fun to play with," she laughs.

Allison is excited about the story potential in having Chloe interacting with the man who could be Doomsday. "It's awesome. I mean, I'm learning more and more about the comics as we go, because I don't know a lot about the Superman comics. So, just finding out a couple weeks ago that Doomsday actually kills Clark - I mean, kills Superman in the comics, and being a part of a struggle between the dark and the light side again, I think, is really exciting, so I'm looking forward to it. And Sam is a wonderful actor, and so charming, so I am having a lot of fun playing with him," she says.

One of the men from previous years of Smallville - Lex Luthor, played by Michael Rosenbaum - won't be seen regularly in Season 8, and although some characters will be interacting with him off-screen, Allison doesn't expect for Chloe to be one of them. "I don't foresee my storyline crossing over with him too much, just because I have a lot going on with Isis and Davis and Jimmy, and then my own super powers that are kind of happening. It would probably be more with Cassidy [Freeman] and Tom [Welling], but it's possible. I mean, I've got my nose in everything, so it's possible." She refuses to count out the possibility of seeing Michael Rosenbaum on the show again. "We'll see that bald head again. He's not gone for good," she speculates.

"No, because they're still very much a part of our lives," Allison says when asked if she misses having Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk on the series. "We're like a train. We just keep going and forging ahead. We miss them dearly and we love them and we talk about them and think about them all the time, but we're making a show, man. We can't slow down," she says. She does address the feelings of doing the new season. "I'm directing this year, so that's a totally new beast to tackle, so I'm looking at the show in a very different way," she says. "Also, there's something so wonderful about the family that we've developed, and so coming back it doesn't just feel like I'm coming back to work on Smallville; it really feels like I'm coming home in a lot of ways, so it's really nice to be able to come back and enjoy that, and kind of fall into the warm embrace of the family that's being built there."

A return to the Daily Planet might not be in the cards for Chloe as the show goes into its eighth year. "Well, I visit the Daily Planet," she teases. "I don't know. She's really diving head-first into the Isis [Foundation], and she's really taking on the job of being a mentor and that kind of place of solace for the meteor-infected, and so I think that that's really going to be her focus, and I think she's pretty angry at Lex Luthor, so she's going to stay as far away from him and his cohorts as possible." She does remind that "anything's possible" with regards to Chloe's future. "That's the fun part," she says.

"I think that the most fun for me has been the fact that my path as this character has not been anything secure, so we've really been able to work in quite an equal partnership - the writers, myself, and the fans - in shaping who this character is going to be and shaping the direction she's going to go. I really like the fact that everything is new, and that we're really molding a brand new character together. As far as my character's evolution, my favorite part is just how honorable she is. I think that if I was to choose any female character on television to play right now, Chloe would definitely be in my top three, because I think that she's just a great - just integrous, and loyal, and strong woman, and I don't think that we have a lot of those on TV for young women to look at. So, I'm very proud," Allison says, revealing that the other two women would be Allison Janney's character on The West Wing and the character played by Mary-Louise Parker on Weeds. "All three of those women really exemplify strength and intelligence, and I like that," she says.

For Season 8, Allison looks forward to exploring the darker aspects of Chloe and cutting the apron strings from Clark. "It's time for him to grow up a little bit and not rely on Chloe so much, so that Chloe can go off and forge her own path," she says. "She's been his shadow for a really long time and has been doing things of great importance, but I think it's really exciting this year to see her forge her own way and figure out what she's passionate about, and figure out how she wants to do that. Which you really start to see her do at the Isis Foundation, and she's really narrowing down her scope of what she wants to focus on. She's trying to help that part of the population in the world, and I think that's really cool," she says.

The second episode of Season 8 has Chloe taking in a young meteor freak who needs her help. "I think Chloe's really taking on the whole Mother Teresa kind of thing that's been looming around since she started with her healing super power a couple of seasons ago. She's got such a huge heart, and she's recognizing that there's more people out there that need her, other than Clark Kent, which is another reason why I think she's starting to cut the apron strings and let Clark venture into his own sort of thing, because she's really seeing how many people need her help, and Bette is just the first of, I think, many," she shares. Mack credits Chloe's drive as being instrumental to her character. "I don't think Chloe would stop until she actually couldn't go any more, like, physically fell over. So I think she's just going to take things on until she can't," she says.

Allison feels that directing an episode - as she will be this year - is an important part of her own personal evolution. "I've been acting for 22 years, and I love film so much, and I love the whole process of making films. It's just sort of the next step of understanding it on a deeper level. I always liked telling stories in whatever fashion I can, and directing is just understanding and learning a different element to the storytelling process," she says. She reveals that her episode will be either #13 or #15, and that the story is as yet unwritten, but that there will not be a lot of Chloe in the episode, by her request.

Finally, Allison was asked about the possibility of having her character appear someday in the pages of DC Comics. "I love it," she says. "I think it's so cool. I mean, what an amazing honor to have a character written after you. I think it's so cool. So, I'm thrilled about the opportunity and about the possibility, and I hope to see it come to fruition."

KryptonSite Comic-Con Report: Cassidy Freeman (Tess) Speaks!

We're almost finished with posting our roundtable interviews that were held after the Smallville panel at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, and this time we talk to Cassidy Freeman, who plays the show's newest villainess, Tess Mercer!

"Tess is a go-go dancer, coming to take over the world," Cassidy jokes when asked about her character's background.. "No. Tess Mercer, she's fierce, she's fun, she came from nothing and she worked her way, and she's super, super smart, which I love. She started working for Lex, and saw how powerful he was, and how strong he was, and she was thankfully chosen as the one to sort of fill in for a while."

Prior to taking the Smallville part Cassidy appeared in a CW television pilot titled Austin Golden Hour opposite Justin Hartley, who will be sharing many scenes with her in Season 8 of Smallville.

"The pilot that I shot with Justin was so much fun," she says. "We both played paramedics, and it was really cool to have the opportunity to work with him again, because he's a familiar face. Coming into a group of people that you don't know, it's nice to have a person that you do know. And Justin's sort of the funniest guy I know," she laughs. As for their characters, "what I can tell you is that we know each other, and I'm still finding out how we know each other," she says.

Learning more about Clark is very high on Tess Mercer's list, much like it was a priority for Lex. "I really want to know who he is, and what's going on with him. I'm very inquisitive about Clark, because he was close to Lex, and Lex is missing, and pretty much the only thing I want to find out right now, is where he is, and I think that Clark can help me do that. I'm trying to find out ways to convince Clark to help me out," she reveals.

Cassidy does hope to get to work with Michael Rosenbaum at some point on the series. "Oh my gosh," she enthuses. "Who wouldn't love to work with Michael Rosenbaum? The stories are incredible. Everybody loves him. Watching him, he's so talented. I would absolutely love to work with Michael Rosenbaum," she says, revealing that she has been a fan of the show prior to signing on. "The show actually started when I was going to college, so unfortunately I didn't have a television in college," she laughs, "but after I got out, I actually did start watching it, and I've become an even bigger fan now that I went back and filled myself in."

Life on the Smallville set seems to have been a comfortable task because of how the show is run in Vancouver. "They are an incredibly well-oiled machine," Cassidy says. They've been doing this for a long time, they're all really good hearted people, and there's no diva on set; there's no person that has a bad attitude, which is rare. And so, it was daunting at first, even just moving up there and changing my life, but it's been an incredible transition."

Looking to her co-star Sam Witwer, who will be playing Davis Bloome in Season 8, Freeman reveals that there is nothing planned as of yet for them to share scenes, but that the two actors share an interesting connection - both are from Chicago, and their fathers know one another. "I think maybe we hung out at the park, when we were babies, but we just didn't know," she laughs.

Cassidy Freeman makes her Smallville debut in the Sept. 18 season premiere.

Episode #8-5: "Committed" October 16, 2008

UPDATED 8/5/05: From TVGuide.com: Clark and Lois will be "forced" to make like lovebirds as they investigate some strange goings-on involving a crazy guy and a Moment of Truth-esque lie detector "game." In the course of this, Lois and Clark find themselves engaged in a smooch.

Also, this interview with Sam Witwer aka. Doomsday.

KryptonSite Comic-Con Report: More With Sam Witwer On Doomsday!
Last week, we posted our interview with Sam Witwer and his take on the series' new character Davis Bloome... a man who may someday spell Doomsday for Clark. Now, we have more material to add to the interview - just scroll down past where it says NEW STUFF!

And here you go...

"He is this paramedic in Metropolis - a very cool, conscientious, nice guy," Witwer reveals about his character of Davis Bloome. "He's sort of a perpetual outsider. He grew up in the foster system and had a very tough childhood. He's brought into the story because he forms this fast friendship with Chloe, and eventually he starts blacking out and missing time, and he becomes curious as to why that's happening, and what he learns is really horrible stuff."

"He finds out that he is innately the opposite of whatever he wanted to be. Hopefully the telling of that story will be very sad and psychologically messed up, and it will be probably very easily the darkest stuff Smallville's ever done," Witwer reveals.

"Eventually he is Doomsday, and he will eventually resemble the character that DC Comics fans are expecting," Witwer spoils. When asked if that means he will be wearing prosthetics later in the season, Witwer could not answer. "That I cannot comment on, but I will say that he will eventually resemble what people are expecting," he says.

"I just hope that the fans like what we do with it, because it's our own interpretation," Witwer says. "It's with the blessing of DC Comics, and we are not invalidating any of the backstory that Doomsday's had previously, but we are interpreting and adding to that backstory, and hopefully the fans dig on it, and I'll take my best shot at that guy."

NEW STUFF!

Witwer is hesitant to provide too many details on the kind of relationship and interaction his character will have with Clark. "Where that relationship is going, it's a new type of thing for the show. I'll say this: I don't think Clark has had the opportunity to have a friend like Davis, and likewise. I can't get any more vague than that, can I? They're going to have a very unique buddy-buddy friendship. That sounds weird too, doesn't it? I can't talk about it, man. I really can't. It's a really awesome idea, though," he says. He is unable to describe his first scene with Clark as the scene was yet to be filmed at the time of the roundtable discussion. "He meets all of these characters at once, so in terms of his first impression of Clark, it's a hard question to answer because we haven't shot it yet. We're about to shoot it in the next day or so, actually, so I can't get super-specific as to how that's going to go down, but I do know where the relationship is going, and I can't say anything about that either. But! It's a very cool thing," he says. With that comment, Cassidy Freeman reminds him that he is being a tease.

He is, however, ready for a Doomsday/Clark brawl. "He's been asking for it, man. You know. Who doesn't wasn't to take a swing at that guy?" he laughs. "I just hope that the fans like what we do with it, because it's our own interpretation. It's with the blessing of DC Comics, and we're not invalidating any of the backstory that Doomsday has had previously, but we are interpreting and adding to that backstory, and hopefully the fans dig on it, and I'll take my best shot at that guy."

Sam acknowledges that playing a villainous character can be a great challenge. "Playing those roles, it's really tiring, but it's great. It's a great challenge," he says. "I like doing things that intimidate me. When I read the script for The Mist, I was like 'I don't know how I'm going to do that; I don't know how that's going to work out.' Same thing with Dexter. I've had the opportunity to play a lot of things, where I had no idea how it was going to go, and I was intimidated, and didn't think it was going to work out, and it's really tough. It's easier to say the nicer guy, and that's what we're doing right now, so I'm happy. But eventually, again, you do want to challenge yourself, and you do want to stretch, so I am looking forward to exhausting myself," he says.

Some familiar folks made the transition to Smallville easy for Mr. Witwer. "What's cool is there are members of the crew that were on Battlestar, so there were some friendly faces, so that was really awesome," he says.

Having had experience with Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars prior to taking the Smallville role, Witwer is no stranger to projects with great mythologies. "It's really great, because as a kid I was a huge Superman fan, and watched all the movies with my parents, and I'm a big sort of pop culture mythology guy, and so stories like the Superman mythology and the Star Wars mythology, they're significant and they're important, because I think they're great tools for teaching basic morality, especially to kids. So, that's why I'm so into them, and that's why I feel very lucky to be a part of it," Sam says.

With the series' large fandoms, it was asked if Sam checked out what was being said about him online. "I was told [to avoid it] early on, I think Katee Sackhoff suggested that, because she went through hell with that stuff. I try to stay away from it and just kind of do what I think I should do, and hope that [the fans] like it, and eventually it'll trickle back whether people like it or not. I'd rather have that happen in a sort of more natural process than go and seek out every guy has their opinion on how it should have been done or how it wasn't done," he says.

Look for Sam Witwer to make his first appearance early in Season 8.

Update on the premire, including...where's Impulse gonna come in??

I know you said that the Justice League will be coming back to Smallville with some new members, but you didn't say anything about the Flash. Is he returning? — Brian

Matt: Impulse, meaning Smallville's version of Flash, is not involved in the Sept. 18 premiere, no. But this season is supposed to be rather JL-heavy, so it's possible he could resurface... in a flash.
