An interview with Aaron Ashmore, aka. Jimmy Olson.

Smallville's Jimmy Olsen Looking to Grow in Season 8 By Steven Eramo

To be, or not to be ... a dentist. That was a question that actor Aaron Ashmore pondered when he was just eight years old. He had no idea that he would one day set his sights on a very different line of work. “My twin brother [and fellow actor Shawn Ashmore, Bobby Drake/Iceman in the X-Men films] and I were kids when we began acting, but back then I never thought, ‘This is something I can eventually make a living at,” says Ashmore. “I had a good time doing it, but it was more like a hobby to me than anything else.

“After graduating high school I traveled around a bit and did a couple of jobs that I liked, but then I began to wonder if I should pursue this ‘other career’ [acting]. So the whole dentist idea went out the window and I began to focus all my energies towards the acting. And here I am today.”

Having cut his acting teeth doing TV adverts, Ashmore, who was born in Richmond, British Columbia, began booking day roles on such Canadian-made TV shows as Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Due South and La Femme Nikita. “I was getting more to do in front of the camera, and it was just fun to be on-set,” he says. The actor has since built up his resume to include a variety of small and big screen roles. In 2006 he was cast as Jimmy Olsen in the hit CW Network TV show Smallville. Oddly enough, it was a part that he almost let slip through his fingers.

“I was in Toronto visiting my family and friends when I heard about the audition for Jimmy Olsen,” recalls Ashmore. “They [the casting people] wanted me to put my audition on tape and send it down to them in Los Angeles. That’s when I began to think, ‘They’ll probably want to hire an actor they can see in the room and actually work with.’ However, I read the [audition] sides and loved the role, so I knew I had to go for it. I did an audition tape, sent it to LA, and then didn’t hear anything for almost ten days. That’s when I got a call asking if I’d like to fly to Vancouver the next day and play Jimmy Olsen. So it was one of those out-of-the-blue-type offers and I couldn’t have been happier.”

An ex-boyfriend of Daily Planet reporter Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack), Jimmy Olsen comes to Metropolis in Smallville’s sixth season opener "Zod" and is subsequently hired by the newspaper as a photo journalist. Ashmore reprised his role in nine additional episodes that same season, including "Noir", in which Jimmy is knocked out and “wakes up” in a very different Smallville.

“That story is probably my favorite one so far on Smallville just from the standpoint of we got to dress up and play these characters from the 1940s,” says the actor. “I think everyone here really enjoyed themselves because it gave us all the opportunity to emulate those old Humphrey Bogart movies and do something completely out of the box and pretty cool.”

When Smallville began airing its seventh season it did so with a new addition to the cast, namely Ashmore, who came onboard as a series regular. “It was fun to be back, but even more so, to be like, ‘Wow, they’re making me part of the gang,” he enthuses. “I couldn’t believe it. Having been away from the character for a few months I thought I might be a little rusty stepping back into Jimmy’s shoes, but it wasn’t like that. In fact, I got right into the swing of things and just moved along with everyone else, so it was all good.”

During the recent Smallville hiatus, Ashmore worked on three films, a drama entitled Privileged as well as two upcoming thrillers, Dead End and The Thaw. In early August, he and the rest of the Smallville cast and crew returned to Vancouver to begin shooting the show’s eighth and final season, one that the actor hopes has plenty more in store for his TV alter ego.

“So far the writers have really developed the relationship between Chloe and Jimmy, but there has only been a little bit of interaction with him and Clark Kent [Tom Welling],” notes Ashmore. “However, since we know that down the road the two of them are supposed to be best of friends, there are still a lot of places they can go with that relationship. So I’m looking forward to that. It’s the same with Jimmy and Lois Lane [Erica Durance]. The two of them shared some fun little scenes together last year and I think we’ll be seeing more of that in season eight. Jimmy and Lois have a brother/sister thing going on where they kind of poke fun at each other, which is a neat dynamic. So I hope that they explore that a little more.

“What I’m especially looking forward to and hoping for, though, is some further development with Jimmy himself. The character has kind of been going around in circles as far as having self-confidence issues and trying to get out of that rut if you will, but then falling back into it because he hasn’t really grown up quite yet. I’ve talked with our writers a little bit and it sounds like there’s going to be a duality to Jimmy this year. They’re going to try to bring a stronger, more confident and capable side to him, which I think will be interesting for viewers to watch and for me to play.

“Jimmy is always going to have that goofy, puppy-dog side to him, but I feel there’s a great deal of room, especially in a TV show like Smallville, to fill in this character and reveal other sides to him. We’ve definitely begun to see that in earlier episodes, and I think this year there will be opportunities to do more. I’m ready to take what they give me and run with it. So we’ll see what happens.”

FINALLY!!  Something new!!

Justice League to the rescue

Smallville is back for its eighth season on September 18 with a superpowered opener. With Clark (Tom Welling) still missing after his showdown with Lex in May's season finale, it's up to the Justice League to save the day. Aquaman(Alan Ritchson), Black Canary(Alania Huffman) and Green Arrow(Justin Hartley)track down the Man of Steel at a shady Russian work camp, where Clark is powerless. "The Justice League will never be the same, and Clark Kent will never be the same,"says Exec Producer Todd Slavkin. "The preimere pushes us into areas we've never explored before, mainly Clark's destiny."

News on Kara and Lex (Laura Vandervoort &  Michael Rosenbaum).

UPDATED 8/24/08: Laura Vandervoort revealed at the 2008 FanExpo in Toronto, Canada that she will be returing to Smallville for an episode to wrap up her storylines. Her episode shoots in October, which means it will probably land somewhere between #9 and #11 of the season. Sadly, Michael Rosenbaum has given no indication that he will be returning, and he has revealed that he is currently in negotiations for a film role.

Kara Returns!

Kara a.k.a Supergirl is ready to make a comeback on this 8th season. This year Smallville had a representation on the Toronto's Fanexpo 08. Michael Rosenbaum and Laura Vandervoort attended to this convention and Laura announced her come back to the show. According to her she will be shooting an episode on October so making some calculations she will be or in the 9th episode "Legion" (featuring the Legion Of Super Heroes and that it will be written by the DC Comics writer Geoff Johns) or on the 10th episode.

Given the connection between SuperGirl and the LOSH our guess would be she will be on "Legion" but we don't have any confirmation yet therefore Kara's involvement on this episode its only speculation (or wishful thinking) for now.

We are officially invited to the wedding of...Jimmy Olsen & Chloe Sullivan!!!  Take a look!!

Meredith in Houston: Hey, Kristin! You seem to be ignoring Smallville lately. Any juicy scoop to share?

Just had a long, juicy talk with new Smallville executive producer Darren Swimmer, and he told me that there will definitely be a Chloe-Jimmy wedding, but that it does not go according to plan. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a bloody mess.

Here's something!!

Question: Do you have any new Lois/Clark Smallville scoop? – Trish

Ausiello: At some point within the first seven episodes, one of them will confess their love for the other. (Hint: The one doing the confessing is not pictured to the left.) Also within that time frame: Jimmy will ****** *** Clark's ******

And this.

Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer Interview

Quote:
As I said when I posted the interviews with Allison Mack and Justin Hartley, I’m really looking forward to season 8 of “Smallville.” The reason is…with the departure of Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor), the show can now tell new stories involving new people. We’ll no longer have to watch a very drawn out love triangle between Lana, Lex and Clark. Finally, Clark can start to use the Metropolis backdrop to fight more super villains and interact with new characters.

This season really does have tons of possibilities, and after speaking with the new executive producers - Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer – I think they get it and have some great ideas.

During our roundtable interview, they discussed their plans for the show and they also talked about what would happen if this ends up being the last season. But the highlight has to be their talking about bringing in more comic book characters. While some have been on the show before, it seems like they’re going to try and get a lot of them back (Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Black Canary, Cyborg, Impulse) and also introduce new characters that we haven’t yet seen on “Smallville.”

If you’re a fan of “Smallville,” you’ll really enjoy this interview. Look for an interview with the other new executive producers Brian Wayne Peterson and Kelly Souders later tonight.

Todd Slavkin: Great to meet you guys, thank you for being so kind to the show. We were telling…the media has been really awesome. The press has been great and we don’t take that for granted.

So what’s it like getting keys to the kingdom?

Todd Slavkin: So fun. It’s great. It’s better than an E ticket at Disneyland. We’ve been on the show since season 2. We’ve worked closely with Al and Miles for what is it…6 seasons now? So the transition isn’t as severe as one would think. It’s not like we were brought in from the outside and all of a sudden given the keys. For the last few years we’ve been very involved in key story elements, key plot lines, you know, working with them. It’s more responsibility. It’s somewhat more…with great power comes a great responsibility. The Superman line? We certainly feel the burden of carrying the legacy, but I think you guys are going to love the premiere because we’ve been executing those guys vision for so long. It’s not like we’re saying our egos are like this is going to be our show now. It’s not like that at all. It’s like how do we continue the legacy and the vision. It’s going to be our own. You’ll see a little bit of…

Darren Swimmer: What they’ve established works.

Todd Slavkin: Yeah, and it’s great. And the rhythm of the show and all that stuff. We’re not going to change that, you know? It’s cool..

I’m just curious, I asked the executive producers earlier the fact that you guys are having such cast changes, to me, actually invigorates the show because you guys with different actors you can see different things. Can you talk about what you’re planning on doing with some of the characters?

Darren Swimmer: Absolutely, yeah. Tess Mercier is going to be a really interesting character. She’s got a lot of layers. She’s somewhat of a chameleon and she’s many different people all at once. You never really know who she really is. Cassidy Freeman came into that role day 1, first dailies off the floor she nailed it. We’re incredibly lucky to have found her. She’s going to be a huge star and she really brings what Michael Rosenbaum brought to the role which is….all of the innuendo and all of the different layers of things and double meanings and delivering every line with a certain amount of like double edged sword kind of…

Todd Slavkin: Don’t mess with her. She’ll kick your ass.

I guess I was also more looking at the fact that until the season finale, you guys always had to deal with the Lex/Clark/Lana situation and now that dynamic has basically been removed so there’s not always this love triangle thing going on. So I wanted to know how does that free you up?

Todd Slavkin: Well, there’s new triangles. That’s what’s great about it, right? Because the triangles are only getting crispier as we go along. She is searching for Lex. That’s kind of her MO. Where is Lex Luther?

Darren Swimmer: She doesn’t believe he’s dead.

Todd Slavkin: She doesn’t believe he’s dead for a second and he disappeared in the Arctic, well eventually she’s going to find out guess who else was in the Arctic with him. So Clark and Tess—Tess is also running the Daily Planet—so there’s Lois Lane there and Clark and Tess. Clark’s an attractive guy, let’s be honest. Tess Mercier is an attractive woman and so is Erica and those feelings will collide. This season will be all about relationships, so even though we’ll still have our cool effects and our super cool action, it’ll be much more character based. You know the character Miss Tessmacher from the movies, and I don’t know if some of you have heard of Mercy from the DC universe. We’ve kind of taken them and combined them—Tess Mercer is her name. It’s neither Tessmacher or Mercy but it’s an amalgamation of the two and it’s so fun to write. I mean, you guys you’ll see her. She’s like…she’s in the mansion you know and her eyes….she’s thinking so much you can’t stop looking at her.

Darren Swimmer: Davis Bloom…I was trying to touch on Davis Bloom, who will eventually become the Doomsday, but starts out as Davis Bloom and Chloe and Davis get along really well. They hit it off right away, so that may create different triangles with Jimmy.

Todd Slavkin: Clark.

Darren Swimmer: Yeah, there’s a lot of richness that we can do when you write. It’s fun to play these different dynamics with new characters.

Offiicial Season 8th Synopsis.

Now in its eighth season, this modern reinterpretation of the enduring Superman mythology and its classic characters continues to blend realism, adventure and emotion into an exciting action series. With realistic portrayals and award-winning, state-of-the-art special effects, SMALLVILLE stars Tom Welling (The Fog, Cheaper by the Dozen movies), Allison Mack (The Ant Bully, Opposite Sex), Erica Durance (House of the Dead, The Butterfly Effect 2), Aaron Ashmore (Veronica Mars, The West Wing, upcoming The Christmas Cottage), Cassidy Freeman (Finishing the Game: The Search for a New Bruce Lee, Cold Case), Sam Witwer (Battlestar Galatica) and Justin Hartley (Aquaman, Passions). From Tollin/Robbins Productions and Warner Bros. Television, Smallville airs Thursdays (8:00–9:00 p.m. ET/PT) on The CW.

This season, Clark Kent (Welling) moves closer than ever to embracing his calling as the iconic superhero he is destined to become. Spending less time in his hometown and more time in the big city of Metropolis, Clark will encounter new challenges and new faces – both friend and foe – as he begins his career at the Daily Planet. Characters from every corner of the DC Comics universe will pay visits, including Plastique, the heroine-to-be with an explosive personality; Maxima, the seductive, intergalactic goddess; and Superman's most formidable adversary, Doomsday, the only character who is able to kill Superman. This season will also feature an appearance by DC Comics' time-traveling Legion of Superheroes, who return from the future in an episode to be penned by renowned comic book writer Geoff Johns.

Last season came to a stunning conclusion with a confrontation between Clark and his longtime nemesis, Lex Luthor (former series star Michael Rosenbaum) under the frozen columns of Clark's arctic Fortress of Solitude. Years of secrets came to a head as Clark's former friend finally discovered the truth about Clark's alien heritage. Clark's world soon came crashing down as the fortress crumbled in an icy avalanche, leaving both characters' fate a mystery.

Lex's moment of truth didn't come without a price. He murdered his father, Lionel (former series star John Glover) for information about the legendary Traveler. Clark also had to defeat Brainiac (recurring guest star James Marsters), who had banished Clark's Supergirl cousin Kara (recurring guest star Laura Vandervoort) to the Phantom Zone and attacked both Chloe (Mack) and Lana (former series star Kristin Kreuk), leaving them both in catatonic comas. Though Brainiac's demise ultimately lifted their trances, Chloe was soon arrested for hacking into federal databases – just as she was about to respond to a marriage proposal from Jimmy Olsen (Ashmore). Meanwhile, in a tearful, videotaped good-bye, Lana told Clark that she was leaving Smallville and his life forever, encouraging Clark to fulfill his destiny – something he wouldn't be able to accomplish with her in his world. While one chapter of his life seemingly came to an end, another was about to begin. With fewer commitments tethering Clark to the farm, Lois Lane (Durance) asked him to apply for a job opening at the Daily Planet.

Season eight begins a few weeks after the Fortress' icy collapse, as a LuthorCorp arctic excavation team investigates Lex's whereabouts. Members of the Justice League reunite in the search for Clark, who has been rendered powerless by the fall of the Fortress. As the season unfolds, Clark's new position at the Daily Planet will mean working across the desk from Lois. The two will be forced to team up to cover Metropolis' most pressing goings on. Sometimes it's Lois herself who becomes Clark's biggest obstacle, especially when he's on a deadline. But with Clark and Lois thrust into such close proximity, sparks are bound to fly, and feelings will start to surface that come as a surprise to both of them. At the same time, Clark begins to discover the balancing act he must perform as he explores his dual identities as both reporter and superhero.

Even with Lex gone, the Luthor mansion isn't vacant for long. Its newest resident is the beguiling Tess Mercer (Freeman), who, according to Lex's written instructions, has been placed in charge of LuthorCorp and all of its projects, including oversight of the Daily Planet. Tess proves to be as inscrutable as she is cunning, and is an enigmatic new presence in everyone's lives. It won't be long before Tess' attention turns to Clark. But Clark is wary of her intentions, and as the layers of her past are peeled away, new mysteries surface. Through it all, Tess' resolve remains unshakable – to find Lex Luthor, as she is convinced he is still alive.

Clark isn't the only one who will face formidable challenges. Oliver Queen (Hartley) returns to make Metropolis his home. He finds himself at a crossroads, forced to travel through some dark terrain – especially when demons from his past are reawakened. Oliver ultimately begins to question his role as a superhero, just as Clark is embracing his own.
With a new fiancé and puzzling new abilities that intrigue her as much as they frighten her, Chloe decides to turn her attention toward helping others. She takes over where Lana left off and reopens the Isis Foundation to provide counseling for those with meteor-powered abilities. She soon finds just how tricky the meteor-powered can be. Chloe's life is further complicated when she meets Metropolis paramedic Davis Bloome (Witwer). A tireless public servant, Bloome strikes up a fast friendship with Chloe. Soulful and mysterious, Bloome has demons of his own. He's troubled by large gaps of time that he can't remember, and as he comes closer to the answers, he must confront his own worst fear – that at his core he is pure evil.
The series, based on DC Comics characters, was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (both of Spider-Man, Shanghai Noon movies, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and is executive produced by Kelly Souders (Stuck) & Brian Peterson (But I'm a Cheerleader), Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer (both of Control, Natural Selection), Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola (latter three from One Tree Hill, The Bronx Is Burning, Norbit, Wild Hogs). Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

A rumor on Lana's "return".

A Later Return For Lana?
UPDATED 8-27-08

Reports and even quotes from the Smallville producers implied that Kristin Kreuk's Lana Lang would be returning "for November sweeps." As the known spoilers are getting closer to that time period, no word had come out about the return of Lana in any episodes.

Could it be that Lana's return will instead be during February sweeps? Or are the Powers that Be better at keeping surprises than we may have imagined? Stay tuned....

And this.

Smallville: What's in Store for Season Eight?

Want to know what's coming up on Smallville this season? Me too, so I rang up Darren Swimmer, one of the series' four new exec producers, to inquire about just that. Click in to find out the good stuff he spilled on Clark's (Tom Welling) intergalactic booty call, the developing appeal of being a superhero and just when Kristin Kreuk's Lana will be walking back into Clark's life...

Nice Kid From Krypton Makes Good: This is the season of Clark's Superization. According to Swimmer, "He's going to be seeking out the trouble, as opposed to reacting to trouble when it happens. One of his main motivations for going to the Daily Planet was to be somewhere where the information comes in." Consider D.P. to be his own personal police band radio. "He's going to be much more on patrol than he was ever in his life—and he's really stepping up in a big way to his destiny." And since his destiny and the Daily Planet are over in the big city, "The feel of the show is going to be a lot more Metropolis this year." Don't worry, though, Clark still lives in Smallville as of season eight, and there will be plenty of scenes back in the old home town.

The Old Switcheroo: If you were so inclined, you could probably blame Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore) for the cape, tights and giant S thing. According to Swimmer, "There's an episode where Jimmy will think he sees something and starts connecting it to Clark, and Clark has to dig himself out of it. That starts Clark thinking that maybe it would be wise to have a secret identity. He starts embracing the idea that there's someone out there saving people. He's not denying that completely anymore, he's just not ready to tell anyone it's him. And that makes this year very exciting for us." No telling yet if there's actually going to be a costume, but the Superman brand is definitely in development...

Clark's Love Life, Lois Edition: According to Swimmer, "Erica Durance and Tom have such a great chemistry on camera together as Lois and Clark. I just love seeing the dailies. They're going to be butting heads a lot, as usual. They'll be teaming up on stories and getting into the typical hijinks together." However, even though Clark reportedly offers Lois her old room at Kent farm, Swimmer tells me they will not be living together—for now.

Clark's Love Life, Lana Edition: Kristin Kreuk will be back, for five episodes total, right in the middle of the season, at what Swimmer calls "a fairly inopportune time." Like at a moment when Lois and Clark just happen to be making out in a closet? "It won't be that drastic, but you're not that far off." Still, when it comes to the legendary drama that is "Clana," Swimmer said, "Clark is getting past it. He's not mulling over it too much, he's learned his lessons, and it's time for him to move forward, but of course, when Lana shows up in person, that makes things a lot more complicated for him." Women! Can't live with 'em, can't chuck 'em up into the ionosphere. Jeesh.

Clark's Love Life, Intergalactic Booty Call Edition: Lest you fear our boy Clark may be living a monastic existence this season, know that Maxima is on her way. As Swimmer explained it: "Maxima is the intergalactic goddess who needs to mate, and humans just don't fill the bill. The way that we portray her, one of her powers is skill at making herself irresistible to the men who come upon her—and Clark will not be immune to that. There's going to be one episode, but we're hoping to do more than one. Charlotte Sullivan is the actress we cast, and she did a really great job, she's really interesting."

Villains and Troublemakers:

* First off, no Michael Rosenbaum at all this season. I know that's truly awful, but to make it up to you, they are introducing Samuel Witwer as Davis Bloome/Doomsday. Said Swimmer, "Sam is fantastic, he's doing a really great job playing a guy who's sort of the tortured supervillian." (Swimmer also told me there's ongoing discussion about introducing Darksied as well, so hang in there for developments on that.)

* The other antagonist this season is Tess (Cassidy Freeman), a Luthercorp apparatchik. Or should I say apparat-chick? Because as Swimmer explains, late in the season Tess becomes a new contestant in the Clark love derby: "Tess is definitely interested in him—and who wouldn't be?" Swimmer declared himself a big fan of Cassidy herself: "Cassidy Freeman is also doing an incredible job. Nobody could fill Michael Rosenbaum's shoes completely, but she's carrying the mantle as best as I can imagine anybody doing it."

Cousins, Allies and Superfriends:

* As for Clark's allies, Supergirl (Laura Vandervoort) will be back for either episode eight or nine. I asked why she wasn't back full time and Swimmer told me, "Her appearance was great, but the story that we told with her seemed to come to a natural ending point for the time being."

* Oliver Queen/Green Arrow (Justin Hartley) will also get the spotlight in an upcoming episode where he is poisoned, and that also gives Clark and Chloe some reason to spend quality time together: "That's an episode that we will find out a lot about Oliver and his past, and Clark and Chloe will work together to save him."

* Last but not least, Swimmer confirmed an appearance by the Legion of Superheroes (not to be confused with the Justice League, although Swimmer also said they would love to have a storyline for Justice Leaguer Wonder Woman on the show). Regarding the Legion: "It's three superheroes, Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy and Lightning Lad—although we might not use those names—on a mission from Superman in the future, who sends them back to help make things right."

Sad, looks like it's going to be Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman....didn't they just do that??
Time is passing fast my friend. That was 10 years ago. I know what you mean though, I feel like it was just yesterday when I was watching brand new episodes of the A-team and Knight Rider.
