‘Smallville’ Pa Kent Better Than ‘Man of Steel’ Says John Schneider
John Schneider, who played Jonathan Kent on ‘Smallville’, isn’t a fan of Kevin Costner’s take on the character in ‘Man of Steel’.

Former The Dukes of Hazzard star John Schneider can breathe easy knowing that Pa Kent won't be featured, as far as we know, in the upcoming Man of Steel follow-up Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The actor portrayed Clark Kent's adoptive father Jonathan on Smallville. Having some ownership over the iconic DC character, he doesn't mind saying his is the best version yet, and possibly ever.
John Schneider doesn't have a problem with Kevin CostnerCostner or his performance in Man of Steel. His problems lie within the writing of the character itself. Even though there is a long list of actors who have played Johnathan Kent throughout the years, John Schneider truly believes that the writers of Smallville were able to capture the true essence of the character better than anyone before or after. He explains:
"I love Kevin, I love what Kevin does. I didn't care for the fact that they wanted...There was one scene in there, where Jonathan was advising Clark to do something that was kind of self-serving, it was tell a lie, I can't remember exactly what it was. That bothered me because I think Jonathan Kent is the best dad perhaps ever depicted on television. And I don't mean my work, I mean just the man that I was fortunate enough to play. He was a great father, and I don't think that the one they crafted in Man of Steel was a great father. I think he had some flaws that don't belong in a comic book. I really had wished that had been me, I mean he had my clothes, he was in front of my silo, so why not?" *chuckles*
There are many things to argue over when it comes to Zack Snyder's Man of Steel and his take on the world of Metropolis. Having played Jonathan Kent for 5 seasons on Smallville, John Schneider is certainly entitled to have his opinion on how others have treated the character. But do you agree with his assessment? Man of Steel was released June 14th, 2013 and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Antje Traue, Harry Lennix, Richard Schiff. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.
The way I see Kevin Costner's portray of Jonathon Kent. That he was a more protective father, that he didn't want Clark using his powers in fear people would fear Clark, or want to hurt him and take him away for using his powers. He wanted Clark to live a more secretive life by not using his powers until one day there would be a time he can use his gifts and help and inspire people.
I like all the actors who portrayed Jonathon Kent. Each actor had their own way of bringing that character to life.
"Although Lex Luthor is your ultimate opponent, you will triumph over him, and when you show yourself to the world....it will be a different age than ours, Clark. A silver age of heroism...that will start when they look up into the sky at you...with hope for tomorrow. You will help everyone to embrace it."-Dr Fate
