I got this email from EW that came with a intro to a piece they've done on Superman Returns. At the end is a link to their article.
SUPERMAN RETURNS SOARS INTO THEATERS
Entertainment Weekly Gets the Real Story Behind the Summer Blockbuster
After 19 years, 5 directors and 30 other superhero movies, Superman is back, but can he still fly? Entertainment Weekly beats the streets of Metropolis to get the scoop on what Superman has been up to and where he’s been since he last defeated Lex Luthor.
A post-Christopher Reeve Superman movie has been in the works since 1997 when Tim Burton was thinking of directing Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel. Since then, the project has gone through numerous incarnations with various directors until Warner Brothers finally settled on Bryan Singer to take the helm.
Meanwhile Brandon Routh was growing impatient. Back in 2004, Routh had been considered for the lead role by then director, Brett Ratner. After Ratner had left the project, Routh wondered if Singer would still want him for the part.
“I knew he had my audition tape. I kept wondering, Is he going to call?” says Routh. “It was like it had all faded away. I was feeling very unsatisfied.” On the morning of Aug. 13, 2004, the actor got the call. Singer wanted a meeting ASAP. Routh’s reaction was exasperated relief: “Finally! I mean, I thought I had done pretty good.” Singer met Routh for coffee that day and left knowing he had his star. He also had a commitment from Kevin Spacey to play Lex Luthor.
Spacey’s take on the villain is a bit different than Gene Hackman’s portrayal. “He still has that shocking humor, but not that wonderful used-car-salesman quality Hackman had,” says two-time Oscar winner Spacey.
Kate Bosworth who portrays the angry and heartbroken Lois Lane admitted that she drew from a well of personal emotions. Prior to shooting, the actress reportedly broke up with beau Orlando Bloom. So, “if you [get] a strong feeling of that, it’s probably because it was an interesting time in my life,” she says.
The movie kicks off July 4th weekend opening on June 28th, 2006. http://www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,1204671_1_0_,00.html __________________
