Aero sweetie, relax. What are you a fan of? I must clarify that I defend the ideal of superman, I won't be silent if someone messes with Big Ol' Supes. The humanization of superman I see as a plan by Lex Luthor to degrade him in our eyes> I'm sure he was behind the whole new movie, Smallville, Lois/Clarke thing.
Superjon how poor of you to slur and defame someone and suggest they take drugs? Poor form. Even more amusing, I am in Australia and I have over the last 15 years worked with AFL and NRL players as well as Pro-Bodybuilders. I have also worked in the US with NFL / MLB athletes, so I have a far better understanding of these athletes than you can imagine. I find the NFL players far better athletes then either Aussie codes. Most of my good friends still work with AFL teams today. Suffice to say they find the culture of fitness and strength in the AFL to be inferior to NFL science. I'm on the inside daily. I don't mind your personal assumptions about me, I'll clarify for you. 20 years of weight training, no drugs, lots of determination and I stick to my ideals. I represented Australia in 2 sports and I'm aiming for 2 more in the next 3 years. ACSM guidelines are invalid for me. Don't slur an athlete about drugs if you don't know them, I trust in hard work. Perhaps you should try it and take lots of steroids yourself, then you will find out that drugs don't make champions, iron will, discipline, training, diet makes a champ.
Thats what annoys me about a skinny superman. He isn't super.
Love Vic

First of all I'm not sure if you noticed but I'm a guy, second a true superfan does not judge by appearence, yet by character. __________________

Well VicVDPhD, if you think that nfl players are so great then you obviously didn't see the interview with the two who played for Parramatta in the nrl back in '98 or '99 because they thought they were in for an easy time when they came over for pre-season training. How wrong they were because they both said that the weights sessions weren't that different from what they were used to but after half an hour in their first cardio session they spent the next ten minutes throwing up. To that I say, how stupid were they to assume that the codes were that similar just because they are contact codes. I don't take drugs of any kind performance enhancing or social so that is out of the question. Also Aero made a good point earlier when he said that if he is too big then he will be far too easily noticable as Clark Kent because if is 6'4" and 280 lbs, as you suggested, he is going to stand out quite a lot, don't you think? In my opinion 6'3" and 230 lbs is the right look for superman and Clark Kent because he is about the size of an olympic 50m or 100m swimmer. The size he is far too big for a tennis player anyhow because they don't need to be above 200 lbs because then are too slow around the court. You have your opinion and I have mine.

Hey VicVDPhD, Neal on the superman homepage made a good point about the size of superman and I was wondering what you think of the very valid point aswell. He wrote in his very extensive review of Superman Returns that how feesible is it for superman to be over bulky because he has pretty much unlimited physical strength so what is he going to use for his bench press or biceps curl because no matter what he picks up it isn't going to be heavy for him to lift. I am adding that he isn't like Mr. Incredible who needed to "get back into shape" he just always looks like an athlete. I guess that you are associating a heavy body weight and high muscle mass with being excessively strong when if you truly know your training then you would know that the biggest guy in the gym isn't necassarily the strongest guy in the gym because I have seen that theory backed up by fact many times where I train.

How much you bench superjon?
I do know that there is a really big guy at my gym that can't bench much. He's trained in the past for body building shows. Of course he mainly works out with dumb bells.
Me I work out for the overall picture. I want to be skinny but I also want strength and endurance. __________________
My best ever was 220lbs but these days I train for more definition which means that I follow Serge Nubret training methods. I only use moderately heavy weight but I use more reps and more sets like 6 sets of 12,12,10,10,8,8 on compound movements and 4 sets of 12,10,10,8 on isolation movements. I only bench about 155-175 lbs with much more control of the movement and I get a pretty good workout from the chosen exercises in the routine. At a body weight of 180 lbs to be able to get 2 reps out of 220 lbs was pretty good as far as I am concerned because I have never been that strong in the chest so when I could get above my bodyweight I thought that I was doing great. I have better shoulder strength and leg strength than chest proportionate to bodyweight. I used to be able to get 160 lbs on a standing shoulder press and I can still do 125 lbs quite easily whenever I do shoulder workouts. You didn't say if you agreed with that his size wouldn't matter because he would never be able to find anything to workout with.

Right well I think lifting mountains would give Superman a workout. If he can find things that heavy to lift.
You can't really assume because he can't find things to work him out his muscles would look small otherwise you might have to assume Superman would look like a walking stick since he has a super high metabolism and can't strain his muscles on anything. No matter what he eats it burns off.
I think the perception of Superman as a reasonably big guy is probably the correct one. Nobody wants to see a weak Superman. Not to say Brandon was that skinny at least on the movie. Some of these posters make him look a lot thinner than I thought he did on the movie.
Speaking of working out I need to get down below 180. I'm like 5'7' 185 - 190 pounds. This week I benched 275 once but the other dudes in the gym can make a fellow feel pretty weak when you see dudes doing that 8 times or more. I think my biggest enemy is time. Not enough of it to burn off all the excess calories and fat from sitting down at a computer all day. If I could get down to 165 -175 and keep the same level of strength I have now I would be happy.
I want to look like Rocky on Rocky 3&4. Now that would be cool. Did you know that Rocky is coming back again? Rocky Balboa Movie
This months edition of Wizard magazine listed the fight between Rocky and Drago the Russian as like the 25th greatest fight of all time out of all comic book and or movie fights. __________________
Yes I saw that Stallone was making another Rocky movie because I am guessing that he is bored given the fact that number 5 wasn't that good of movie compared to the other 4. I think that you have to keep your workouts relevant to how you want to look because I have my workouts based around what muscles I need to keep strong for tennis and I want to keep my physique about the same as Toby Maguire in the spiderman movies. I strongly discourage you from doing what Sly did for the original Rocky movies because he was training 7 days a week and about 4 hours a day. If you want to try something different for cardio then combine boxing drills with sprint drills becasus they make for an awesome workout. Try this Tim, do 1 minute of cross punches then do a 20 yard sprint then 1 minute of uppercuts with a 20 yard sprint. Keep doing that for about half an hour and see how you feel.

Sounds rough. I've been kickboxing in the gym 2 or 3 times a week, plus 3 miles a week on the treadmill usually, and trying to play basketball once a week. Playing b ball especially full court can give you a pretty good workout.
Plus I've been giving a day a week per body part for weight lifting except for arms and shoulders of which I've been doing on the same day. Usually working out about an 1 hour to one hour and a half. __________________

No we all had a big debate over whether or not Brandon was big enough for the role of superman nad whether the suit was padded or not, right! Well after watching the extra disc and seeing him working out I came to the conclusion that suit itself must be very compressive on his physique because he looked pretty huge during his gym sessions. Now I know that is all understandable being pumped up and everything but he isn't going to drop that much size between his workouts and when he was shooting. So after taking all that into consideration I think that the suit was made of something very compressive like the elite swimmers wear because he does look slimmer with the suit on than without the suit on. Is this just my opinion or did anyone else notice this aswell?

I recently bought the big boxset about superman with the thirteen discs in it. I watched the behind the scenes documentary about Chris and how skinny he was when they cast him in the role from doing a stage play. To everyone who dumped all over Brandon for being too skinny the fact of the matter is that Chris was only 212 lbs when they started shooting the first superman movie which is about 15 lbs lighter than Brandon was when he started shooting SR. The reason I believe this to be true is because, David Prowse, then man who help put the 40 plus lbs on Chris said so in the making of superman 1 and I can't see any reason why David wouldn't be telling the truth. My own personal theory is the material that the SR suit is made from is very restrictive on Brandon's muscularity and I think that Chris would have looked even skinnier in the SR suit. I say just change the fabric and go with lycra like Dean had on not the speedo bodysuit.

I have recently been watching the original George Reeves superman show from the 1950's and with all the conjecture about the size of Brandon I think that we all should realise that George was only about 5'11" or so. If you keep that in mind then Ben Affleck as George Reeves in Hollywoodland is a miscasting because he is 6'3". I am guessing that back in the 40's, 50's and 60's someone who stands over six foot was a giant.

I do think people are getting taller. I've heard that there are actually steroids in the food we eat nowadays.
Funny when you compare how young Brandon Routh is to the age of the first Superman Kirk Alyn who was if I'm correct 38 years old when he got the job. __________________

For those who liked Brandon....well good, i'm not not gonna talk bad about him or anything, but in my personal opinion as a Superman devotee, he just didn't convince me, i don't know why, there was just something off, something that was missing.
He is a good actor, don't get me wrong, but to portray The S Man there was just something missing,i don't know what, to me he seemed like (please take no ofence anyone)a kid playing dress up, he didn't quote capture that super heroe vibe. and my friend said (acordinf to her) that his muscles looked fake( whatever that means).
On other note for me the best Clark Kent has got to be Tom Welling he just has this something about him, this total super heroe vibe. And i don't think him not ewanting to wear the tights had anything to do with insecuraties, i mean come on we all know he has the body 4 it, and me as much as i love The S Man i wouldn't be caught dead in those tights
All in all the movie was 50...50 4 me. Lois was a nono __________________

Quote: i think brandon looks hot, but i guess i can see why some thinks he's to skinny, the character i was REALLY disapointed in was LOIS LANE! i mean KATE BOSWORTH???? of all people i was not happy they picked her, she was good but i dont know she doesnt really look like lois lane i was just really ticked off.
i think kate herself was more ticked off...she said she didn't want to be Lois and all but they couldn't find a subsitute...but i have NO idea why eople are complaining about the costume/superman/movie blah, blah, blah...Brandon is NOT skinny! far from it and the suit looks wayy better than the other ones...the briefs being too high makes it look gay the suit looks very sophisticated with the darker colours more unlike a circus costume. the superman 's' is great too. sure its a little small but it looks great! besides, having it too BIG make him look like he's showing off which isn't something superman does so all these compliants are REALLY stupid
