apophis, sounds like you've got a lot of knowledge in special effects!! My nephew has worked a lot with computer effects (though he has just finished high school) he managed to put together a short film which he aptly called Star Wars III 1/2. Granted he would never go on to publish it b/c of sound effects/scores used but he went through with similar software (I think it was Maya) and staged everything from lightsaber fights to ship flights. All in all, not too bad for a teenager (home-schooled at that!).
Anyhow, I wondered if this would be a good program to enhance/modify video of a small car jump to appear to be a larger jump?
I ask as I have an ongoing project involving a replica of a black T-top with that red light running on front (heh heh).
I've gone through back home and have everything set up (ramps and what not) and balanced out weight in the car to run a small jump. No, I'm not crazy and when I say small I mean small, we're talking taking the car only a few feet off of the ground. Originally, I thought having cameras set up as low to the ground as I could to run the jump and then going back and cutting together from the different angles. Again, this is just for fun and I'd appreciate your input on this. __________________The Bible is so powerful. It's not to be left on your shelf. Congrats to your nephew! Sounds like that was a complex project to pull off. I'm just going into my senior year of high school myself. Honestly though, your nephew might be the better person to ask. What I am currently working in is modeling and animation which is the process of creating objects in 3d and making them move. What you are looking to do is called live action compositing. It is taking a real video, or pieces of a real video, and either overlaying effects over them or overlaying the video over effects. For instance you could take your car jumping, and film the grand canyon. Then take the two videos and combine them to make it look like your car jumping the grand canyon. You could also use a computer generated background of some alien planet or something. You could modify that light to look cooler, and add rocket boosters out the back of the car. Furthermore the car could be completely recreated in cg, and then you could do whatever you want with it. However each of these is increasing in complexity of how it would be done. As for compositing, Houdini is the best. That is literally the stuff Houdini is made for. I don't have much experience with Houdini though since I am still working with Maya. Programs like After Effects also do compositing, but they won't do the effects. You would have to bring in the effects from a different program (such as Houdini or Maya) which is probably what your nephew did. I have not done much live action stuff myself however, so I can't give you a step by step on how to do it. I only have something of a realization of how it's done, opposed to experience doing it. I will post more about exactly how it should be done later, but for now I have to go to classes. Hope this helps some. More later.

Dude don't jump it! I watched a Dukes of Hazzard documentary and found out that every time they jumped a charger on that show the integrity was compromised and they had to junk it.
Who is to say how big a jump would hurt the structure of the car, and it looks awfully cool to ruin!
If you don't mind me asking how much did the car cost you? One of these days I want a car just like that and a 69 Dodge Charger! __________________

Hey Tim,
Don't worry, I have done my homework on car integrety and have even had the chance to talk at length with Jack Gill and Cory Eubanks inregards to car jumps and what's involved while attending the 25th Anniversary event for the Dukes of Hazzard held in Covington, Georgia a couple of years ago. The organizer, Travis Bell, and the North American General Lee Fan Club even arranged it to have Cory drive and jump a rigged General over a Rosco Sherriff's car while there (now that was amazing).
Also, I'm talking about a jump in the smallest of terms (the car may get a foot or two off the ground at best) and I have the car weighted to keep it from going nose first into the ground!
As for the car, well I bought it back in December of 2000 for $2,200. I have been working on restoring/customizing it since. I will tell you that I bought from a report I got back from my brother as the car was about 6 hours from where I lived and I wasn't finding one locally. However, if I had to do it over again I would not have gotten it because, well, my brother did not catch a lot of problems with the car that I would have had I taken the time to look the car over really well when I went to buy it.
However, I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now (though it has been a long road!!). What with parts, engine work, body work and paint I figure I have about $10,000 invested in the car (including what I paid for the car) at this point. __________________The Bible is so powerful. I wish I had some extra bucks, I saw a Transam for 2000 bucks yesterday. It's blue though. I'd have to paint it. __________________

Well my car was definately a FAR cry from what it is now than when I got it. I set up a VERY simple site to document my work. I did have a lot of pictures but as it is a free webhost they eventually cut back on the space I had available, and so I reduced the number of pictures I have there. I really need to give the site an overhaul, Harv's Project __________________The Bible is so powerful. It's not to be left on your shelf. Hey if you can send me the site put together where all I got to do is ftp up all the pics an web pages I'd put it up on my tvcrazy.net site and link it to my knight rider page
superherouniverse@yahoo.com
You'd have to break it up to less than 5-8 megs a email though for it to get through the mail I think.
Let me know. Maybe I can figure out a way to set up a ftp account for you so you can send it up. I'd have to look into it though. __________________
