Late Actor's Dream of Cure for Spinal Cord Injuries One Step Closer To Reality
SHORT HILLS, N.J., July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Christopher Reeve Foundation (CRF), the national, non-profit organization dedicated to finding cures and treatments for spinal cord injuries and improving the lives of people living with paralysis, applauds the U.S. Senate for voting in favor of H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act.
"We are grateful to all of the Senators who today stood up for those who can't," said Kathy Lewis, president and CEO of the CRF. "For millions of Americans who live with paralysis, the dream of a cure in their lifetimes is now one step closer to reality.
"Christopher wanted to live in a world where politics did not stand in the way of hope. By passing H.R. 810, the Senate has offered promise to millions of Americans suffering from diseases and disorders such as spinal cord injuries, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS and many more. Federal funding of stem cell research will help expedite the progress of therapies to the patients who need them most.
"Today is a day of victory for the American patient, offering tremendous hope," Lewis noted, "and a great example of our elected officials setting aside their differences and putting the people first.
"We call on President Bush to sign the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act into law as soon as possible."
