There is a big surprise in "Superman Returns," and if you don't want it ruined, stop reading now.

"Superman Returns" has good humor, action, and visual effects, and I like the references to the 1978 movie.  But they did something I don't like.

They made Superman an illegitimate father.

Now you may wonder about that: Aren't there lots of movies with graphic sex?  What's the big deal about Superman having a son outside marriage?

Well, he's Superman, and Superman is supposed to represent an ideal, he's supposed to represent virtue.

If you want someone to have kids outside marriage, leave Superman out of it.  (Johnny Depp's pirate character I would understand; Superman, no.)

The movie might have been more popular without that.

I agree with in one way but disagree in another. Yes I agree with the fact that superman should not have had a child out of wedlock because it is not a part of his virtues when it comes to the way that Jonathan and Martha raised him. However he never had the child out of wedlock by choice because he left for Krypton before Lois found out that she was pregnant and if he had not left then they would be husband and wife for sure. Also I think Jason is apart of a much bigger storyline to come in the following movies.

i have to disagree. for me, supermans having a child out of wedlock isn't a problem. but i can see how it would be for some i guess. to be honest, i never gave it a second thought until i started seeing all these posts about it. i don't consider remaining abstinent to be a virtue. i consider it a life choice. but if you grew up with certain beliefs  than you would naturally project those beliefs into your vision of superman and who he is and what he represents. if you don't believe in premarital sex, than when you think of what superman means to you, you'll think of somebody who would obviously not engage in that activity. for me it's not an issue so when i hear that supermans got a kid...it's not a problem. it doesn't detract from the character. but just imagine if lois had had an abortion as was bryan singer original idea? just kidding.

Zod99 one thing you have to consider is that a lot of Superman fans grew up watching the George Reeves version on TV. I caught the reruns and of course all the super friends shows where the strongest drink we might have seen Superman drink was milk in one of those little 30 second spots between episodes where Superman or some other super friend might say something like drink milk kids or don't smoke blah, blah,  so the idea of Superman as a super boyscout with old fashioned ideas and morales becomes ingrained into your subconscious mind over the course of a couple of decades. It's not easy to just go oh well everybody else is drinking and having sex and whatever so old Supes must be too now. That's like the Lone Ranger suddenly taking off his mask grabbing a beer and telling Tonto to go take a hike.

don't get me wrong... i see your guys point. all i'm saying is that for me it's not a problem but as i mentioned in my last post... i can see how it would bother some fans. but consider this, you mentioned that a lot of fans grew up watching the 50's george reeve series. if that series had been made in the 90's or now, your idea of superman may differ. in the 50's, on T.V, there was never any mention of sex. it was considered taboo. that was just the way it was back then. i mean, comedian lenny bruce was looking at serious jail time just for making jokes about oral sex. if sex was talked about, back then, as openly as it is today, then perhaps the writers back then may have incorporated it into their storylines and people wouldn't consider it one of supermans virtues. plus, as you mentioned, it was primarily for children back then. nowadays it's no longer just for kids and as an adult, i like to see superman having normal problems like we all have. i grew up with the christopher reeve movies and in those movies, he hooked up with lois so superman having sex was never a big deal to me. however, if you grew up watching the 50's series and being a fan of superman from the beginning, i can see how after 40 plus years of imagining superman a certain way and then all of a sudden he's sleeping with chicks, it could sorta shatter your vision of who and what he is. i respect your guys opinion but, as i mentioned, it's just not a problem for me. just to show my point, in smallville, clark recently slept with lana. if you're a kid or teen and smallville is your first time being exposed to the superman myth, then you will have a vision of superman and it probably not be about a virgin flying around.(not that there is anything wrong with that)kids who are exposed to superman today will picture him with different "values" than those first exposed to him in the 50's and that's because societies values and standards have changed. i mean no offense, but if the 50's superman show was on T.V. today but written exactly like it was back then, it wouldn't even make it to air. and that's not a slight to george reeves or the show but just a sign of the times. but anyhow, i enjoy debating these topics with you guys so please write back. see ya

The only thing I have to add really on that is that Lois and Clark from the 90's managed to have a great show and have Clark Kent wait until he was married to Lois before he had sex, and according to the show Clark had never had sex before.

It certainly didn't hurt the show and it seemed a lot more real at least in terms of what Superman's character would or should be.

Here's the thing, a comic book super hero is an exaggerated example of a hero, giving the character super human abilities and usually morals that most humans don't possess. Today more and more characters are less likely to sport old fashioned values, but even now they usually show extreme feelings of responsibility for the greater good, where most people would say who cares it's not worth it.

So on that fact alone it makes since that at least one character in DC Comics would possess morals that would shame most boy scouts, and that hero by history and logic should always be Superman given the fact that he like Spiderman are very popular with the kids.
