After the supposed death of Superman Metropolis needed a new hero to help out. And one man who took up the mantle of the Man of Steel was John Henry Irons.

Of course the movie Steel's origin did not have anything to do with the comic book version, but Shaquille O'Neal who played Steel in the movie is said to be a big Superman fan. Even one of Shaq's songs features Superman in the lyrics.
