Superman and Captain Marvel have always been arch rivals even going back to the Golden Age of Super-heroes during the 1940's and into the early 1950's. But after years of court battles, Fawcett Publications decided to throw in the towel to DC.
DC had claimed that Captain Marvel was a spin off of Superman and Fawcett decided to battle over that claim in court, but as 1953 rolled around, comics were not as big a profit for Fawcett Publications anymore, so they just decided to sell the rights to Captain Marvel and characters to DC and settle out of court.

In 1972, DC decided to bring back Captain Marvel, but because Marvel Comics had all ready had a character named Captain Marvel, DC would publish the comic with the name of the old wizard named Shazam who gave the Original Captain Marvel his powers and avoid confusion and other court battles.

The door to the meeting of Captain Marvel and Superman came in 1974, Shazam issue #15 became a landmark issue.

Superman's arch foe Lex Luthor had invented a magical device called the accumulator which was a machine that could draw magic out of the very air, however, using it very carelessly, Luthor uses it on a comic magazine of Shazam, and is blasted into the universe of Shazam. Luthor does return to the universe of Earth One.

Now, with Earth One (home of the Justice League of America): and Earth Two,(home of the Justice Society of America, the Shazam universe from this point on would be called Earth-S thus add to the already mass of confusion that would lead to the 1985 "CRISIS on INFINITE EARTHS".

But with the annual Justice League-Justice Society team up coming in mid-1976, DC decided to add the Earth-S characters in a three part adventure which would begin in Justice League of America #135 and end in #137 with a brief encounter with Superman and Captain Marvel.

The story was titled "Crisis in Eternity"  which had Captain Marvel's arch foe King Kull taking over the Rock of Eternity. A lame plot! But the story opened the real door for the much waited show down between Superman and Captain Marvel.

In 1978, the DC tabloid sized Limited Collection Series added a story called "When Earth's Collide!"

about an evil Martian named Karmang the Evil  who lived in Earth Ones' universe of Mars. Here was Karmang who lived on Mars even during the time Jonn Jones (the Martian Hunter) civilization lived on Mars,

revives Black Adam (Captain Marvel's arch foe) and an old recent foe of  Superman called the Quarmer

(the Quarmer was a being created out of desert sand when all kryptonite was destroyed in the famous Superman #233 "Kryptonite No More" ( first series) now available with the DC Millennium Collection).

With Karmang using these two foes to create mock battles with the two heroes on their earths, the two villains place machines on the two earths causing them to magnetically draw closer each other and causing an explosion that would free Karmang's fellow beings who were trapped in a strange limbo when the evil wizard was trying to find a way to make himself in mortal. While Superman and Captain Marvel fight to the death, Supergirl and Mary Marvel find the foes responsible for the big mess, fly to Mars and defeat Karmang. While with cooler heads, Shazam fills in Supes and Cap on the whole affair, and the two heroes team up to destroy the evil machinations.

During the 1980's, there were several team ups of Superman and Captain Marvel that even lead into a close and personal friendship. There was even a time in 1987, that Captain Marvel joined the Justice League.

So now with the 1990's behind us, there are new plans to have a joint Superman-Captain Marvel team up in an adventure that shall have the two heroes doing a battle on Apokolips with hated foe Darksied.

Isn't it good that even after sixty years of rivalry, that the Big Red S and the Big Red Cheese (dubbed by foe Doctor Sivannah) that time mends all "wounds"?
