The end of "Crisis on Infinite Earths" in 1986 marked the end to the Silver Age of Super Heroes. There now would be changes to the entire line of the DC Universe. Enter "legend" writer-artist John Byrne to change and rewrite the Superman Legend.

And change Byrne did. With a biweekly miniseries, he changed Superman's relationships with Lois Lane, Batman, and even Lex Luthor. The "new" Superman began with a new #1 to the comic line. Superman came into the world a hero in his twenties, and super-heroism was new in the world of the 1980's. With society trying to accept the concept of heroes in the world, on the dark planet of Apokolips, that planet's evil ruler Darkseid tries to take the concept of super-heroism and uses it as a dark plan to try and rule the earth.

Superman # 8 2nd series click for larger image of Superman vs the Legion of Super Heroes

In the 30th Century, Cosmic Boy one of the founding members of the Legion of Super Heroes, plans to take a vacation to the 20th Century. Having taken one of the Legion's time bubbles to travel back to the 20th Century, Cosmic Boy experiences terrible time storms in the time barrier. When Cosmic Boy reaches the 20th Century, he finds that the 20th Century history does not match 30th Century records with the events now going on in the 20th Century. And even bigger shock: after crossing paths with Superman, Superman does not recognize what was suppose to be his former fellow Legionnaires.

After witnessing this: Cosmic Boy returns to the 30th Century to report his findings. With concern of this events, several members of the Legion decide to investigate these strange events. Mon-El, the Legion's mightiest member, will lead one group back to Superboy's time, the other group consisting of Brainiac 5, Blok, Invisible Kid and Sun Boy will visit the year 1987.

After being hit by time storms in the time stream, Mon-El's group of Legionaries arrive in Superboy's time. Having been greeted by a surprised and happy Superboy in his identity as Clark Kent, the Legionnaires are relieved to know that all that was suppose to be "normal" by their standards, or are they?? Without warning: Superboy uses a strange device that fires a ray that paralyzes the Legionnaires and the Legionnaires are taken prisoner by Superboy!!

As recorded in Superman #8, Brainiac 5, Blok, Sun Boy and Invisible Kid, arrive in 1987 only to be greeted by an angry Superman who mistaken the Legionnaires for alien invaders, a quick confrontation takes place and  surprisingly, Superman defeats the Legionnaires. But after an explanation by Brainiac 5, about their mission, Superman assures the Legionnaires he does not know them and that the Superboy they seek might be somebody else that may be even more powerful than him.

Without warning: the ray that subdued the other Legionnaires, is fired on Superman, Brainiac 5 and co by once again: Superboy!

As recorded in Action Comics #591 the subdued Superman and Legionnaires are confronted by Superboy. After apologizing to Superman for his actions, Superboy dumps the captured Legionnaires into their time bubble and takes off for his time period. A struggling Superman gets free of the worn off paralyzing ray and with a burst of speed dashes off after Superboy. With all effort: Superman grabs unnoticed by Superboy, Superboy's ankle, and with a final burst of super speed, Superboy penetrates the time barrier. Superman with all effort feels the great effect of the time barrier and nearly passes out. While looking on at these events at a dimensional cavern at the end of time is the Legion villain  the TIME TRAPPER!

As the Trapper gloats to himself: he admits to having created a POCKET UNIVERSE  to influence the chain of events that lead Superboy to meeting the Legion. And with having threatening Superboy with doom to his family and earth, he would become the instrument in having the Legion of Super Heroes becoming pawns in doing the evil Trapper's bid to control all of time and the universe.

In his return to his time, Superboy is confronted by a near comatose Superman, but with effort, Superman begins a battle with Superboy. Superboy is  much more powerful than Superman, but it is Superman's experience and wisdom that causes the young Superboy to break down in guilt and explain about his actions

to his fellow Legionnaires and Superman.

After returning Superman to his time period, Superboy and the freed Legionnaires leave for a final showdown with the Time Trapper. This battle would end in the death of Superboy and a final battle between Mon-El and the Time Trapper (Legion of Super-Heroes #4 February 1990). These are stories for another date and another time. But would have very SEVERE influences on the Legion and Superboy.

As for the Pocket Universe, the Trapper would grow bored and forget about it. But the Pocket Universe would come back to haunt Superman in the future. Superman #22 would be John Byrne's last issue .   Superman would make a decision that would haunt him for the rest of his life, but that is another story for another time. However, new writer-artist of Superman Dan Jurgens  would use this decision in a flashback in the classic Superman/Aliens (1996).
